Iams cat food
Iams, a cat food brand owned by the American group Procter & Gamble, offers premium pet food. These diets are quite common in Russia, sold in many pet stores and popular among cat owners. The manufacturer positions Iams as high-quality food that undergoes regular quality testing and ensures the health and longevity of pets. We propose analyzing the veracity of these claims and whether Iams food can be used for daily feeding of pets.

Depending on the type of feed, it is available in packages of 300 g, 850 g, 1.5 kg, 2.55 kg, 3 kg and 10 kg.

Wet menu
As a wet menu, Yams offers meat pouches in gravy for kittens and adult animals, which are available in soft 100g packages:
- Kitten&Junior (with chicken).
- Adult (with ocean fish, salmon, tuna, beef, chicken or rabbit).
- Mature&Senior (with chicken).
- Adult multipack (assorted with beef, rabbit, lamb and chicken).
Compound
Let's take a closer look at the composition of food using Iams ProActive Health Adult with Lamb as an example. The product's quality can be judged based on the first five ingredients, which in this product are listed as follows:
- Sublimated chicken and turkey meat (37%).
- Corn.
- Wheat.
- Animal fat.
- Lamb (4.1%).
Further on the list of ingredients are rice, dry sugar beet pulp (1.9%), hydrolyzed animal protein, dry whole egg, fructooligosaccharides (0.66%), potassium chloride, dry brewer's yeast, calcium carbonate and, lastly, fish oil.

Squirrels
As is typical for premium foods, the first ingredient listed is meat—freeze-dried chicken and turkey. It's a source of animal protein and natural taurine. Surprisingly, however, in the lamb-containing food, this ingredient is listed only as the fifth ingredient. Furthermore, it remains unclear which components and in what form were used. Whole egg powder serves as an additional source of animal protein and amino acids.
Carbohydrates
Yams food contains an abundance of carbohydrates: potential allergens such as corn and wheat, and the least allergenic rice. Furthermore, the presence of two grain ingredients in the top five ingredients suggests that they are used more as a cheap filler and to increase the overall protein level, but provide no health benefits to the pet.
Fats
The fat sources in the ProActive Health Adult Multi-Cat diet are far from the best: animal fat and fish oil from unknown sources, which may contain preservatives and even be a potential allergen.
Additional additives
Additionally, the feed is enriched with the following components:
- Dry sugar beet pulp is a source of fiber and a natural prebiotic that helps normalize digestion and promote regular bowel movements.
- Hydrolyzed animal protein – since it is not included in the top five components, it does not form the basis of the feed, but is used as a natural flavoring to improve the taste.
- Potassium chloride is a potassium compound that is used as an emulsifier (to ensure homogeneity) and ensures the normal functioning of the body.
- Dry brewer's yeast provides the body with B vitamins, improves the condition of the skin and coat, and strengthens the immune system.
- Calcium carbonate is a compound that is a source of calcium and helps reduce the acidity of gastric juice.
- Fructooligosaccharides are useful prebiotics for the formation of beneficial microflora in the gastrointestinal tract.

Thus, the main disadvantages of the composition include the high content of cereals (including allergenic ones), which increase the content of vegetable protein and provide rapid satiety, but are poorly absorbed and do not provide any particular benefit.
Important! Since 1999, 27 violations have been identified in Iams' operations, including product recalls in 2007 due to high melamine levels and in 2010 due to suspected salmonella contamination. Deficiencies in vitamin A, crude protein, taurine, and magnesium have also been identified over the years.
As for the benefits, it's worth highlighting meat in the first position, indicating its type and quantity, as well as the absence of artificial preservatives and the presence of fiber sources.

Reviews
You can find many positive reviews online about Yams cat food, which helps improve coat condition and overall health. However, there are also negative reviews, with complaints about the ingredients or health issues.
Sergey, owner of the Scottish Fold:
"Our cat absolutely adores Yams chicken pouches, and I'm completely satisfied with their ingredients and appearance. The only drawback for me is the price, so I buy 2-3 pouches a week and feed her dry food from the same brand the rest of the time."
Julia, owner of a red Persian cat
"We started using Iams Kitten & Junior food as soon as our kitten arrived. Everything was fine; he ate with gusto, and we used it sparingly. But the main drawback was the very unpleasant smell of cat feces. At first, we tried to tolerate it and ignore it, but eventually we had to change the food, and the problem went away on its own."
Olga, owner of a domestic cat:
"We've been buying Yams for our cat for three years now. His coat is shiny, and his bowel movements are regular. He always eats his fill and doesn't ask for more. Another advantage for me is that the food isn't made in Russia, so I have more confidence in its quality."
Rita, owner of Thai cat Max:
"The ingredients contain corn, which I'm not at all happy with, as really high-quality foods these days are made with rice or are completely grain-free. The pet store didn't have the food I needed, so I bought Yams with Lamb. My cat only came up to sniff it and didn't even touch it; it just sat there in the bowl. I wouldn't recommend it, as there are so many similar foods out there, and this one doesn't stand out."
