Singapura cats

History of origin Singapura cat The Singapura cat originates in Southeast Asia, specifically in the city-state of Singapore. In 1975, the Singapura cat was brought from Singapore to developed America.

History of the breed

The first representatives of the breed were abundant on the island of Singapore. Moreover, their usual habitat was drainpipes and ditches. After the island government decided to reconstruct the sewer system, the cats began to die out. Perhaps no one would have known about the Singapura cat, and the breed would have disappeared from the face of the Earth. But fate intervened in the person of a certain Mr. Meadow from America. As it later turned out, this gentleman arrived on the island on a secret mission. It was he who noticed the unusual cats and sent four specimens to a friend in America.

Interesting fact! Meadow later attempted to claim credit for the breed's development, but due to the secrecy surrounding his mission to Singapore, he was unable to do so.

A corresponding standard for it was developed there, but in 1981. Five years later, the Singapura cat was recognized as a breed. This breed became classified as a shorthaired cat.

Singapuras gradually gained popularity in the United States. Over time, the cat's distribution was no longer limited to one continent, as it was brought to Europe via Belgium as early as 1987. Despite this, the Singapura cat was and remains a relatively rare breed found on the European continent.

Today, the Singapura cat is a rare animal in Russia, and only a few catteries can offer you a purebred.

Singapore itself only recently adopted the cat as its own, but has already made the animal the island's mascot. And although the title of the world's smallest cat has passed to toy bobs, the island's residents prefer to extol their little beauty.

General characteristics of the breed

General characteristics of the breed: appearance and character.

Appearance

Cats of this breed are distinguished by their small size and weight – about 2-3 kilograms.

Due to the above-mentioned features, it is even listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest specimen of the feline family.

A number of advantages distinguish the Singapura cat from other breeds. For example, its short, exceptionally soft, and light fur, which covers the cat's entire body. Males of this breed typically have longer fur than females.Singapura cat

The most common Singapura cat is dark brown, without any markings. The Singapura's body length is no different from the average for similar breeds, but it has a slightly rounded shape. Furthermore, the light and graceful Singapura cat has a very muscular body. Its body is crowned by a rather round head, with a short yet wide jaw. The Singapura's large, expressive eyes are sure to capture anyone's heart.

A Singapura kitten's coat shouldn't be silky. Oddly enough, excessive softness is considered a breed defect. Adults have fine, short fur. Only kittens can have long fur. The Singapura cat differs from other breeds in many ways—its size, its appearance, and, of course, its unique pinkish coloring. The Singapura cat's overall appearance delights animal lovers worldwide. Singapuras typically form strong bonds with one person, completely unwilling to leave them without their precious attention, even for a moment. This kind of devotion to their owner is characteristic of very few cat breeds.

Character

In a Singapura cat's home, avoid quarreling and excessive activity. This breed is known for being timid and doesn't handle arguments between people or intense activity well. Yes, the Singapura is a sensitive cat. Although this trait works to its advantage, people love Singapura cats for their tact and lack of wild behavior. And the fact that they're constantly cautious and sniffing around is something you can get used to.

The Singapura cat's playful nature allows it to spend a lot of time on the move: running, jumping, and never ceasing for a minute. This behavior is typical of both kittens and adult Singapuras. A Singapura cat responds to any actions of its owner with extraordinary affection, never showing aggression even in extreme cases. However, in addition to their extraordinary playfulness, cats of this breed are remarkably intelligent. They sense their owner's mood and will not intrude if they are not feeling well. The Singapura's voice is very timid and gentle, and is rarely heard.

Nowadays, crossing Singapuras with Siamese, Abyssinian or Burmese cats is not carried out, due to the fact that it is possible to violate the stable characteristics of the breed, formed by breeders for many decades.

The Singapura cat will make a devoted pet for active and cheerful people who enjoy even the thought of having a tiny and loyal furry creature waiting for them at home.

She is equally receptive to both elderly family members and small children, and will become a reliable friend to all residents of the house or apartment.

It's important to know that a Singapura cat won't treat humans as authority figures, even with proper care and attention. While the cat will be affectionate and affectionate, it will make decisions based on its own judgment and experience.

Rules of care and nutrition

How to care for your pet and feed it properly?

Care

When it comes to grooming Singapuras, it's worth noting that cats of this breed are very clean. They are completely unpretentious and willing to spend hours grooming themselves. Singapuras shed virtually nothing. Therefore, Singapura owners only need to brush their cat occasionally and also keep an eye on their coat and teeth.

The Singapura cat sheds unnoticed, and its coat regrows quickly. Frequent bathing is also not necessary. The intelligence of this breed allows them to easily remember the location of their litter box and avoid marking their surroundings.

Incidentally, many Singapura cat lovers have noticed their pet's unique attitude toward using the toilet. Many cats quickly grasp the true purpose of the toilet and begin using it for its intended purpose. Naturally, every owner is pleased with this development. Therefore, if you decide to buy a Singapura cat, don't overlook this aspect.

Also, when getting a Singapura cat, remember: they absolutely cannot stand drafts and hypothermia.

Nutrition

Singapura cats need a balanced diet, and are gradually transitioned from kitten food to adult cat food. In addition to dry food, it's recommended to diversify their diet with wet food.

Singapura cat health

These cats aren't the type to "ruin" their figure; they're not at risk of obesity. Therefore, dietary restrictions aren't necessary. However, proper nutrition is the key to health.

The following products are contraindicated for the Singapura cat:

  • pork;
  • sausages;
  • sweets;
  • river fish;
  • cow's milk.

On the contrary, your pet will benefit from products such as lean meat, cereals, and vegetables.

If you choose prepared foods, choose products with a minimum meat content – 30% and high digestibility – more than 80%.

Health

Breeders and owners of Singapura cats should be aware of their predisposition to a rare disease – uterine inertia.

Most often, a sick animal will not survive a natural birth. Veterinarians resolve this issue by performing a cesarean section. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and Singapuras usually recover quickly. Because of their intolerance to drafts, Singapuras are prone to catching colds.

How can you tell if your Singapura cat has a cold? First, focus on the symptoms. The first signs of a cold are:

  • increase in body temperature;
  • discharge from the eyes and nose;
  • general lethargy of the animal;
  • sneezing.

Generally, a cold doesn't pose a threat to your pet's health and is easily treated. However, it's still important to take your pet to the vet.

The Singapura cat generally does not tolerate cold well, which may be one of the reasons why its population is so small in Russia and Ukraine.

Where to buy a Singapura cat

Although this breed isn't very common in our country, there are still catteries where you can buy a kitten. There are several such catteries in Moscow. You can also look for a kitten from private breeders, but the search will likely take a long time. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, mother cats rarely give birth to kittens, and each kitten is literally in great demand. Secondly, breeders maintain the purity of the breed and do not allow defective individuals to breed.
