Cockapoo (cockerpoo, spoodle, cockerdoodle)

The Cockapoo is a cross between a Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. These charming, playful dogs have a docile nature and a sweet face. They are one of the most famous and popular designer breeds.

History of origin

When it comes to designer dogs, the Cockapoo is at the top of the list. This mixed breed has been well-known and popular in America since the 1960s. It's quite possible the first litter was created completely by accident, but the results were quite good. The puppies were intelligent, and many inherited hypoallergenic fur. poodle, which is also characterized by a low degree of shedding and the absence of odor, and a calm, friendly disposition cocker.

Designer dogs, also known as hybrids, are not true breeds—they are crossbreeds of two specific breeds. Therefore, the appearance, size, and temperament of the puppies are not as predictable as those of purebred dogs.

Some Cockapoo breeders are currently working hard to establish a standard and establish the breed as a fully-fledged breed, but recognition is still a long way off. The Cockapoo Club of America was founded in 1999 and is committed to creating a distinct, fully-fledged breed. In Russia, mixed-breed dogs have only recently become popular, and little is known about them among professional dog handlers, much less the general public, so choosing a puppy should be approached with great care.

Appearance

Cockapoos are small dogs. However, their weights vary widely, so breeders divide them into four types:

  • Dwarf – up to 3 kg;
  • Toy – 3.5-5 kg
  • Miniature/mini – 5.5-8 kg
  • Maxi – more than 9 kg.

Cockapoos come in a variety of sizes and colors, as well as body types and coat types. Only certain physical characteristics can indicate that you're looking at a Poodle-Cocker mix. It's impossible to say that dogs must conform to a specific standard or meet established parameters.

It's worth noting that breeders working with the Cockapoo as a distinct breed adhere to a recommended standard that prioritizes health and temperament. The dog should be calm, gentle, and patient. It should be intelligent, loyal, and friendly, strong, and resilient, with good health.

The body is square, well-structured, compact, and balanced. A scissor bite is preferred. The eyes are large and round, with a gentle and intelligent expression. The iris is as dark as possible, and the hair around the eyes should not touch the cornea. The coat is long and dense, evenly distributed over the entire body, including the muzzle and legs. The hair is odorless, non-shedding, and can be wavy or straight. All colors are acceptable.

Character

Cockapoos are usually very affectionate and friendly, they accept everyone, even the elderly, and children, and other pets. From the spaniel, these dogs inherited a moderately calm, even-tempered nature, while the poodle's heritage has somewhat mitigated the dog's hunter traits, making it more suitable for city life. These small dogs prefer to always be close to their family and can suffer from prolonged separation.

These intelligent and playful pets are very devoted to their families, obedient, and friendly. They are curious, cheerful, and affectionate, often even with strangers. They bark only when they have something to say, usually during play or to express dissatisfaction. These dogs are easily trained with positive reinforcement.

Unfortunately, such an ideal combination isn't always the case. Sometimes, the character traits of their ancestors manifest themselves in a less than ideal way: a quarrelsome temperament, a sharp tongue, or, conversely, excessive timidity.

Like any other breed, a Cocker Spaniel/Poodle mix requires early socialization and proper training. Avoid indulging the puppy's every whim or giving in to its every need; this will likely lead to behavioral problems down the road that are virtually impossible to correct.

Cockapoo Care

Cockapoos are ideal for living even in a small apartment. With proper and regular grooming, their coat is completely odorless and sheds little. They are very playful and always enjoy going for walks, but they don't require long play sessions. Walking near the house two or three times a day is sufficient. Very small Cockapoos can be trained to use a pad and avoid walking in bad weather. Cockapoos are very neat and clean indoors, but outdoors they enjoy rolling in the sand and picking up things off the floor that aren't theirs.

Your dog should have several different toys to choose from. Most enjoy soft squeaky toys, balls, and hollow tubes that can hold treats or peanut butter. Tug-of-war games are especially good during the teething period.

Are cockapoos hypoallergenic?

Kakapos have earned a reputation as a hypoallergenic breed. Many dogs that inherit the poodle's distinctive hair structure are indeed suitable for people with allergies to fur and dander. However, there is no scientific evidence that any breed is completely hypoallergenic. Just as any breeder cannot guarantee that their dog will not cause allergic reactions, only close contact with a puppy will allow one to determine whether it is suitable for someone with allergies.

Care

Cockapoos require simple but regular grooming. They should be fully bathed approximately every two weeks. Always brush their coat before bathing to ensure there are no tangles. A hair dryer is also an option if your dog isn't bothered by noise.

You can brush your Cockapoo daily, or at least 2-3 times a week, using a metal comb. Clean the ears with a cotton swab as needed, and pluck any hairs from the ear canals. Trim the nails to a normal length every 3-4 weeks if they don't wear down during walks. Cockapoo eyes also require attention. Wipe them daily with a damp cloth to remove dirt and mucus from the corners. Light-colored dogs may develop dark tear tracks; these can be lightened with special bleaching products.

Cockapoos can be groomed or left natural, but even then, the hair on the top of the nose and under the eyes should be trimmed to make them visible and the whiskers more noticeable. The tufts of hair between the toes and paw pads should be trimmed, as should the hair around the genitals and anus.

Diet

Whether a dog eats natural or dry food is a personal decision. It goes without saying that natural food is food prepared specifically for the dog, not something you eat from the owner's table. If commercial food is chosen, it should be high-quality and appropriate for the dog's age and activity level. Small-breed dog food is suitable for Cockapoos. Portions are calculated by weight, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Treats of any kind should not make up more than 10% of the total diet.

Puppies are fed 4-5 times a day, gradually transitioning to two meals a day by the age of one year. At any age, regardless of feeding type, a dog should always have a bowl of clean water.

Health and life expectancy

Cockapoos are hybrids, free of breed-specific diseases due to crossbreeding outside the normal breeding cycle. This so-called hybrid vigor automatically extends to mixed breeds, but it doesn't always guarantee a complete absence of problems. The most common diseases associated with Cockapoos are:

  • Cataracts (usually occur in old age, sometimes can be removed surgically);
  • Patellar luxation (a common problem in small dogs);
  • Hip dysplasia (X-ray screening is the most reliable way to diagnose the problem);
  • Allergies;
  • Liver disease (more common in Cockers);
  • Ear infections (usually caused by improper ear care or nutrition).

Cockapoos, like other dogs, require routine preventative care (vaccinations, deworming, and treatment for external parasites). With proper care and maintenance, their lifespan is 13 years or more.

Choosing a puppy and price

Cockapoo breeders operate in two directions. Some are trying to create a new breed by crossing first- and subsequent-generation hybrids. Others, however, believe that Cockapoos must remain unique in every way, and this can only be achieved by maintaining heterosis. When choosing a puppy, it's important to consider the breeder's approach.

When breeding designer dogs, choosing the right pair is crucial. It should be a purebred cocker spaniel and a poodle with good appearance and a suitable temperament.

The puppy should be clean, healthy, and active in appearance, well-socialized for its age, as evidenced by the absence of aggression or shyness. Naturally, a puppy from a breeder who breeds only purebred animals tested for hip dysplasia and patellar luxation will be much more expensive than a puppy from a common Cocker Spaniel and Poodle breeding in the neighborhood.

Unlike these dogs, the price of good Cockapoo and Poodle puppies is steep. In the US, a Cockapoo costs between $200 and $1,200. In Russia, the price rarely drops below 50,000 rubles. Puppies can cost less if they are bred by enthusiasts, such as Cockapoo owners who find current spaniel prices too low.
