Wahre Liebe – cat food

Wahre Liebe brand ready-to-eat meals are slowly but surely gaining the attention of consumers in our country. And for good reason: German origin guarantees quality, and affordable prices make the food competitive in its class. But to be sure, it's important to research its origins and thoroughly analyze the ingredients to determine whether Wahre Liebe cat food is as good as breeders claim.

Manufacturer

All of this brand's diets are produced exclusively in Germany, in the town of Kevelaer, on the lower reaches of the Rhine, at Mera's production facilities. The company's history dates back to 1949, when Karl Vos founded a compound feed company. Through painstaking work and German meticulousness, by 1980 the company's product line had expanded to include pet food—Wahre Liebe for cats and Meradog for dogs.

Wahre Liebe – cat food

The core principle of the family-run operation, as it was 50 years ago, is the unrivaled quality of both raw materials and the finished product. It's also important that no chemical components are added to the feed to improve its performance. Particular emphasis is placed on the absence of GMOs and bone meal, a low-quality source of protein, in the formulas.

Assortment

The product list isn't as extensive as many other manufacturers, but thanks to the versatility of many recipes, every breeder can find the perfect food for their cat. All menus are divided into Wahre Liebe dry cat food and wet food. Dry food is also available in grain-free versions. Here's the full list:

  • Majestät im Haus (His Domestic Majesty) – menu for domestic cats of all breeds;
  • Kleine Entdecker (Little Explorers) – food for kittens up to 1 year old;
  • Gewichtige Genießer (Well-fed Connoisseurs) – a special diet for pets with excess weight;
  • Robbers and Gendarmen (Robbers and Gendarmes) – a high-calorie recipe for free-ranging animals (or those living on the street);
  • Feinsinnige Gourmets (Exquisite Gourmets) – a special formula for pets with sensitive digestion;
  • Graue Eminenzen (His Gray Majesty) – food for older cats.

Each of these menu options is available in 0.4, 1.5, and 4 kg packages. Food for indoor cats, outdoor cats, and cats with sensitive digestion is also available in 10 kg packages.

The Wahre Liebe brand's line of grain-free dry food has the word Landlust in its name and comes in only three varieties:

  • With trout;
  • With duck meat;
  • With turkey.

All three flavors are packaged in 0.4 and 1.5 kg packs. In addition to dry kibble, the grain-free line also offers wet food with the same meat bases. Canned food is available in 85-gram pouches.

Feed composition

To form an accurate opinion about these foods, it's worth paying attention to the ingredients. Majestät im Haus is a good example, as it's the brand's most popular and versatile dry food. The official website lists the following ingredients for Wahre Liebe cat food:

  • Poultry protein (25%, dried and hydrolyzed);
  • Corn;
  • Barley;
  • Corn gluten;
  • Chicken fat;
  • Rice (4%).

The first 5-6 ingredients in a feed contain the basic information about its formula, as they make up the majority of the feed's mass. The rest are merely additional nutrients that enhance certain aspects of the diet.

Next on the list are wheat gluten, beet pulp (3%), flaxseed (2%), cellulose (1.5%), and salmon oil (1%). Then comes the sodium chloride content, sunflower oil (0.7%), dried brewer's yeast, and dried chicken eggs. Following these are calcium chloride, chicory (0.2% inulin), yogurt powder (0.2%), powdered dried wild berries (0.1%), and yeast extract (0.04%). Marigold powder (0.03%) and Yucca schidigera powder round out the ingredients. Following the list of ingredients, there is a mention of all the vitamins and minerals included in the food. The guaranteed nutrient content is as follows:

  • Proteins – 34%;
  • Fats – 14%;
  • Fiber – 3.5%;
  • Ash content – 7%;
  • Calcium – 1.1%;
  • Phosphorus – 0.95%.

It's safe to say that for a premium diet, this is a very respectable list, including all the essential components for a cat. But what do each of these ingredients contain?

Proteins

The protein source is poultry, accounting for 25% of the total, and it's already dehydrated, which is excellent—processing won't alter the meat content of the final product. This menu also includes a percentage of plant proteins, derived from the many grains included.

Fats

The sources of plant and animal lipids in this diet include chicken fat, salmon oil, sunflower oil, and flaxseed. All ingredients are very beneficial for cats and are good sources of vital omega acids for your pet.

Carbohydrates

This food contains approximately 35-37% carbohydrates, which come from the large amount of grains. This is more of a filler, as cats have a hard time digesting such foods.

Additional ingredients

  • Beets and cellulose are sources of plant fiber, which is important for healthy digestion.
  • Flaxseed – in addition to fats, provides the body with fiber and many vitamins.
  • Sodium chloride is common table salt.
  • Brewer's yeast (as well as yeast extract) is a valuable source of vitamins. It also helps normalize digestion.
  • Chicken eggs are a storehouse of microelements and, in addition, a valuable source of animal proteins.
  • Calcium chloride is a food additive used as a preservative. It is approved for use in food products worldwide.
  • Chicory (a source of inulin) and yogurt powder (bacteria) are important prebiotics. They promote healthy intestinal microflora in cats.
  • Wild berries can be a source of vitamins in sufficient quantities, but their percentage in this diet is too small.
  • Yucca schidigera – added to food to reduce fecal odor. Thanks to the presence of specific bacteria, this product is highly effective.
  • Marigold powder is a natural and safe food coloring (yellow).

Owner reviews

Valentina, owner of the cat Zvezdochka:

“I couldn’t decide on food for my Zvezdochka for a long time, but then I read reviews of cat food Wahre "I tried Liebe and decided to try 400 grams. The price seemed reasonable, the ingredients were better than many of the pet stores, and they're supposedly made in Germany. My cat started eating it with gusto, and the upset stomach she had with the previous food disappeared. I'm happy, and Zvezdochka likes it too!"

Oleg, owner of a mongrel cat:

«I don't really understand all the intricacies of food, and I'm just not comfortable preparing natural food. So I asked the doctor what dry food he would recommend. Our doctor told me to take Wahre Liebe for indoor cats. So far, so good – no issues with feeding or health.".

Elena Faridovna, Kazan:

«We found a kitten on the street, nursed him back to health, and got him back to health. When it came to feeding him, we initially gave him food from our table. He ate, and everything seemed fine, but at some point he developed an upset stomach, and then he started scratching himself. After visiting the vet, we were diagnosed with a food allergy. The doctor recommended a German grain-free food. Wahre Liebe Landlust with trout. Our little rascal pounced on the bowl as if he'd never seen food before. Since then, everything has been back to normal – his stool is normal, his fur is shiny, and his itching has subsided. He's already grown to a handsome 4 kg!»

Veterinarian Reviews

Natalia Fomenko, veterinary clinic doctor:

"My veterinarian colleagues often leave reviews of pet food on professional forums. I generally agree with them—" Wahre Liebe is a premium cat food that can meet your pet's basic needs. However, it's important to remember that cats need meat, so when using any premium food, it's best to supplement with meat products and vitamin supplements. Otherwise, this food is excellent and can serve as a foundation for a regular diet.
