Vetom, a next-generation probiotic and veterinary dietary supplement for cats and other pets, is widely used as a therapeutic and preventative measure. Composition and action

Vetom is a source of probiotic microorganisms—Bacillus subtilis. This member of the intestinal microflora destroys pathogenic bacteria entering the gastrointestinal tract and increases the number of beneficial bacteria, has a detoxifying effect, helps restore the intestinal mucosa, and stimulates the production of endogenous interferon, which the body needs to fight infections.

The advantage of this product over other probiotics based on lacto- and bifidobacteria is its unrivaled effectiveness: Vetom contains a weakened strain of the most active species of Bacillus subtilis. In addition to the active ingredient—dried Bacillus subtilis bacteria—the biopreparation also contains potato starch, lactose, and corn extract. These serve as fillers and a nutrient medium for the probiotic bacteria.

Newborn kittens

Important! Vetom is highly safe: it has no side effects, and in case of overdose, the excess is eliminated from the body naturally. There are no weight or age restrictions for this probiotic. Individual hypersensitivity to its components is very rare in cats. The only contraindication is diabetes (due to the sugar content).

Vetom for cats

The shelf life of the drug depends on the dosage form. For example, the powder has a shelf life of 2 years, while the ampoule solution has a shelf life of up to 4 years. The probiotic was developed and manufactured by the Research Center, a research and production company in Russia.

Directions for use

The instructions for Vetom for cats provide several dosage regimens. It's best to administer the product approximately one hour before feeding. The probiotic can also be added to food or water. To prepare a probiotic solution, dilute the powder in a small amount of warm water or milk. The resulting solution should be used within 24 hours.

The medication is quite palatable, as it contains sugar, so cats rarely refuse this "medicine." However, if your pet is unwilling to take the medication this way, you can administer it orally using a syringe without a needle, directing a stream of the solution at the back of the tongue. A last resort is to give your cat a cleansing enema and then administer the probiotic suspension rectally.

The dosage is 50-27 mg (calculated as dry powder) per 1 kg of the cat's weight. The duration and number of times per day to administer the medication is determined by the veterinarian. This depends on the purpose for which the probiotic is being used.

  • If Vetom is prescribed to a cat for the prevention of digestive system diseases, it is used as a bioactive supplement. In this case, the probiotic can be given once every two to three days, and the course of its use is from 10 to 20 days.
  • To restore immunity, the drug is usually given twice a day for a week.
  • For infectious and viral diseases, the course of treatment is 3-5 days, but the animal is given the medicine 4 times a day.

Fluffy cat

  • In cases of acute intestinal diseases or persistent diarrhea, when it is necessary for the probiotic to enter the body as quickly as possible, or if the cat is unable to take the medicine orally, a cleansing enema is given, and then the drug is administered rectally for 3-5 days.

Attention! Vetom does not interact with most medications. But with antibiotics Concomitant use with probiotics and sulfonamides is unacceptable: the active ingredients of probiotics and antiviral or antimicrobial drugs mutually cancel each other's effects. Therefore, Vetom should only be used after completing a course of antibiotic therapy or discontinuing the medication containing sulfanilic acid amide.

Analogues

If necessary, the doctor can select a substitute—there are a number of domestic and foreign medications with similar effects. They are based on different strains of Bacillus subtilis and are available in liquid or lyophilized form. These probiotics include:

  • Bactisporin.
  • Bacillosporin.
  • Biosporin.
  • Vitasporin.
  • Intestevit.
  • Coredon.
  • Sporobacterin.
  • Subalin.

Veterinarian Reviews

Lidiya Romanovna Kurchenko, veterinarian:

"The currently popular Vetom product is a dietary supplement with a general tonic and probiotic effect. Vetom for humans is virtually identical in composition to the veterinary product. There are approximately 15 varieties of this probiotic, each assigned a specific number. Each contains different strains of Bacillus subtilis, which act essentially the same way. Vetom 1.1 is the most commonly purchased product for cats; buyers generally prefer the powder form, as it's easier to divide into doses."

 Leonid Ivanovich Storozhenko, veterinarian:

Veterinary specialists consider Vetom one of the best probiotics: the Bacillus subtilis bacteria it contains are universal and successfully multiply in all parts of the intestine, normalizing the microflora there. This accelerates the elimination of toxins and cleanses the intestinal walls of waste. It is effective for weak kittens and adult animals recovering from serious illness or surgery. The supplement has a sweet taste, and even picky cats enjoy it with their food. Vetom is compatible with all medications except antibiotics, which have a detrimental effect on Bacillus subtilis.

Owner reviews

Anna Komarova, Moscow:

"I run a small pet boarding facility. Currently, we have a charming female calico tortoiseshell cat staying with us. The owners left, and the cat was unwell, with obvious intestinal inflammation. She refused to eat and had severe diarrhea. We had to call the vet. For a whole week, she was given Arterium Dia Dog & Cat and Vetom antidiarrheal medication, a teaspoon a day. On the third day, the cat perked up, began eating a little, and her stool became firmer. Now our guest is healthy, eating well, and playing with the other residents of the "boarding facility." I can recommend this safe and effective medication for relieving intestinal upset and eliminating dysbiosis."

Ekaterina Ivanovna, Chelyabinsk:

"My Maine Coon, Bars, was prescribed Vetom after a severe bout of parainfluenza to improve his bowel function. We bought the powder and added it to his food. We gave him two packets of the powder daily, and within a couple of days, Bars was feeling noticeably better. I was surprised by both the rapid effect and the affordable price—a single-serving packet of the probiotic costs just 15 rubles."

  • At the veterinary store, the saleswoman told me to mix 2 ml of water with Vetom on the "tip of a knife." This is not very clear to me; who has what kind of tip and how much should I mix for one application?

    • Hello!
There's no such "tip of the knife" dosage. However, Vetom 1 has a precise dosage of 50 mg of powder per 1 kg of body weight. If you have a 5g sachet, that's 1/100th of a sachet per 1 kg of your pet's body weight. However, since this is rather inconvenient for determining a single dose for a cat, an average value is used, and for convenience, the approximate "tip of the knife" is used. It's difficult to overdose on this medication, so don't worry if the dose seems high or if the amount varies each time.

  • Hello, are Vetom and Sinulox compatible?

    • Hello! Vetom contains bacteria ("beneficial"), and Sinulox is an antibiotic. So what's the point of Vetom? The instructions for Vetom itself state, firstly, that it's used to treat dysbacteriosis after antibiotic use. Secondly, the precautions for Vetom state that it should not be used with antibiotics or sulfa drugs. So, using them together is pointless; all the benefits of Vetom will be negated. Follow a course of antimicrobial treatment first, and then administer Vetom.
