Canigen vaccine for dogs

Canigen is a vaccine for dogs used to prevent distemper, leptospirosis, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases. Its primary purpose is to develop immunity against dangerous viral diseases that affect animals of all breeds, sizes, and ages. The vaccine is produced by Virbac SA, a renowned French company with a positive reputation in the veterinary market.

Release form, composition and features

The vaccine consists of two components: a dry component and a liquid component. They are packaged separately at the factory and mixed only before immunization. A distinct advantage of this vaccine is that it is packaged in single immune doses (1 ml), making it convenient for vaccination. Vials are sold in pairs only.

Canigen vaccine for dogs

Canigen is available in two different variations. The DHA2PPi/LR formulation additionally contains rabies viruses, while the DHA2PPi/L formulation does not. Otherwise, the vaccines are identical, including their administration, potential adverse reactions, and biological properties.

The dry component is a porous, cream-colored mass with a uniform structure. It contains virus strains prepared using a special method:

In addition to viruses, the dry component contains auxiliary components, namely lactose monohydrate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate.

The liquid component is a suspension. It can be light yellow or cream-colored. The suspension contains leptospirosis strains, and in the DHA2PPi/LR variant, also rabies viruses. The glass vials are tightly sealed with rubber stoppers and capped with aluminum caps to maintain a hermetic seal.

Please note! If the vial seal is broken, the vaccine must not be used for vaccination. The contents of the package must be discarded, inactivated, and then disposed of.

How it works

Immunity against dangerous viral diseases develops within three weeks of the first dose, i.e., the second administration of the vaccine. Immunity lasts for 12 months. Therefore, a booster shot is administered annually.

Vaccination of a dog

Immunity is developed by introducing weakened and specially prepared viruses into the body in small quantities. These viruses are incapable of causing an infectious disease, but the immune system mounts a response. The ratio of viruses is carefully calculated by the manufacturer, ensuring the vaccine is harmless to the animal. Furthermore, the vaccine is prepared using modern technologies, guaranteeing the safety of the product.

Please note! Canigen is not used for treatment. It should not be administered if signs of illness are present. Its primary purpose is prevention.

Indications and instructions for use

The vaccine is used to prevent infection with the following infectious diseases:

  • plague;
  • leptospirosis;
  • viral infections caused by adenoviruses;
  • infectious hepatitis;
  • parainfluenza.

Canigen DHA2PPi/LR is also used for the prevention of rabies.

According to the instructions for use, Canigen is suitable for dogs from 8 weeks of age. For puppies of this age, only the rabies-free vaccine is permitted. A booster dose is administered 3-4 weeks after the initial vaccination. Only then will the body's response and lasting immunity develop. A rabies-containing vaccine can be used for booster doses, but only for animals that are at least 12 weeks old. Subsequently, immunizations are repeated every 12 months to maintain immunity.

Two-month-old puppies

The dose of Kanigen for adult dogs and puppies is 1 ml. The product is used as follows:

  1. First, draw the liquid part into a sterile syringe.
  2. Then it is poured into a bottle with a dry component.
  3. Shake the contents of the container well until the mixture becomes homogeneous.
  4. The prepared mixture is drawn into a syringe and injected subcutaneously into the animal.

The vaccination procedure is carried out in compliance with all aseptic and antiseptic precautions. Deworming is mandatory before immunization. This is necessary for puppies and adult animals. Worms produce toxic waste products, which disrupt the immune system.

Please note! It is not recommended to skip vaccinations or violate the vaccine schedule, as this may reduce the effectiveness of Kanigen.

Special instructions

To ensure that the vaccine only benefits your pet, you need to pay attention to the following points:

  1. The dry and liquid components should be stored only at temperatures between 2 and 8˚C. The refrigerator is the best place. However, the bottles should be kept away from food and out of the reach of children.
  2. Temperature conditions must also be observed during transportation.
  3. It is strictly forbidden to freeze the liquid component.
  4. Do not use the product if the expiration date has expired, the packaging is not sealed, or there is no marking on the bottle.
  5. You should also stop using the vaccine if it changes color or consistency, or if foreign impurities appear in it.

Unusable products must be decontaminated before disposal. This is done by boiling them for 15 minutes. After this, no special measures are required.

Please note: If the product has not been used within 2 hours of dilution, it must be disinfected and disposed of.

Contraindications and side effects

You cannot vaccinate with the product from the French manufacturer:

  • puppies under 8 weeks of age;
  • pregnant females;
  • females during lactation;
  • weakened and emaciated animals;
  • pets with severe chronic diseases.

When all instructions and recommendations are followed, animals tolerate the vaccine well. Symptoms of infectious diseases are usually not apparent. Canigen has no contraindications. In rare cases, allergic reactions may occur. If an allergic reaction occurs, symptomatic treatment is used. The animal may become lethargic and refuse to eat. These symptoms resolve quickly on their own. Swelling at the injection site may occasionally occur, but this also does not require special treatment.

When purchasing the vaccine, please note that it is sold in doses. One dose consists of two vials containing both dry and liquid components. The price of Canigen for dogs depends on the content:

  • one dose without rabies costs about 270-280 rubles;
  • one dose with rabies - about 350-360 rubles.

You can purchase the product at a veterinary pharmacy or clinic, or online.

Owner reviews

Larisa, collie breeder:

"We used Kanigen to vaccinate the litter and adult animals. All pets tolerated the vaccine well. We used a rabies vaccine for booster vaccinations for the puppies. There were no complaints either. I personally didn't notice any side effects or behavioral changes."

Oksana, the poodle's owner:

"The last time we vaccinated our dog was with Kanigen. It's been eight months now. It works great. He's constantly interacting with other dogs, and I know for a fact that some of them aren't vaccinated, but so far we haven't had any infectious diseases. I highly recommend it!"

Veterinarian Reviews

Lyudmila Petrovna, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:

"Kanigen is a good vaccine that generally doesn't cause side effects. Although I have had cases where an infiltrate appeared at the injection site, it usually resolved on its own without intervention. Regarding its effectiveness, I have no complaints, although I personally use it more often for vaccinations." Nobivac".

Leonid, a veterinarian with 6 years of experience:

"A good product that will reliably protect your pet from distemper, leptospirosis, and other viral infections. In my experience, I've never encountered a case where the vaccine was ineffective or failed to achieve its intended purpose. Animals generally tolerate it well. In my personal opinion, it's gentler than Nobivac or Eurikan."

  • Apparently, I'm one of them. (1-2%) A 2-month-old puppy was vaccinated... And the next day, the puppy didn't get up at all... I've been dragging myself around for 5 days now, with injections and systems... Damn the day I decided to get vaccinated... Along with all the big pharma... They ruined a healthy puppy...

  • The puppy was vaccinated with this vaccine at the kennel.
    At 7 months the puppy suffered from adenovirus, and at 8 months from leptospirosis.
    They rescued a dog from the brink of death.

    • I sympathize. However, to be honest, such "glitches" are rare. Vaccinations help protect animals from infectious diseases in 98% of cases. But why could this happen? There are many reasons, unfortunately... Don't forget about vaccine storage. Sometimes, during delivery to the veterinary pharmacy or warehouse, the temperature control may be compromised (for example, the refrigerator might shut off). This is rare, occurring in 1-2% of cases.
      Sometimes a batch is of poor quality (then all bottles from this series are withdrawn from the retail chain).
      Perhaps the booster vaccination schedule wasn't met (either the booster was administered too early or too late), which didn't result in immunity development. Alternatively, the first vaccination was administered, say, with series 1, and the booster was administered with a vaccine from series 3. This could already be a problem with immunity development (the first series, for example, contained strain A, and the third series contained strain B. In fact, it turns out that there was no repeat exposure to strain A and strain B; they each entered the body once, which isn't enough to develop immunity, and the animal is effectively unprotected from the disease). Therefore, it's crucial to ensure that the same series is used for each vaccination (we always leave a refill vial for our patients and sign them up to administer the booster with a biopharmaceutical from the same batch).
      Another common cause of vaccine failure is when the vaccine contains one strain of pathogen, but the animal being infected is infected with a different one (as described above). The immune system then has to produce different antibodies.
      But vaccinations still help protect your pet. And you shouldn't skip them...
