Cystophan for cats

Cystophan is an emergency treatment for cats with idiopathic cystitis. This unique formula, which has no analogues anywhere in the world, was developed by the British company Protexin Veterinary. Its key feature is its comprehensive approach to the problem, relieving symptoms and eliminating the cause.

General description

The medication is available in capsule form. The active ingredients, in powder form, are contained in a gelatin shell that dissolves easily upon ingestion. The capsules are packaged in polymer jars containing 30 or 240 capsules. No special storage conditions are required to maintain the medication's pharmacological properties. The key is to store it away from direct sunlight and in a dry place, at a temperature not exceeding 25˚C.

Composition and action

The main feature of the product is its composition. It contains no hazardous chemicals or toxic components that could harm your pet's health or cause side effects. The composition is based on a complex of amino acids and substances naturally found in the animal's body:

  • N-acetyl D-glucosamine – a substance from which glycosaminoglycans are synthesized in the pet's body. These substances form a protective layer in the bladder. Cystitis damages this layer, and the use of Cystophan helps restore it.
  • Hyaluronic acid – a component necessary for the formation of glycosaminoglycans. It helps restore the integrity of the bladder's protective layer during inflammation.
  • L-tryptophan – an amino acid that is converted into a happiness hormone, eliminating excessive anxiety in cats.

The composition also includes artificial chicken flavoring, which gives the medicine a pleasant taste and smell for better consumption by pets.

Idiopathic cystitis develops due to intense anxiety or frequent stress. Conventional treatment only temporarily alleviates symptoms. Conservative treatments are ineffective, as the underlying cause remains. Cystophan is a different story. It has a comprehensive effect on the body:

  • helps restore the protective layer of the bladder;
  • reduces irritation of the mucous membrane, which causes pain and other unpleasant symptoms;
  • has a positive effect on the nervous system and helps to get rid of the cause of idiopathic cystitis.

Based on its impact on the body, Cystophan is considered a safe medicine and is approved for use in animals of any age.

Indications for use

According to the instructions, Cystophan for cats is used for the treatment and prevention of idiopathic cystitis. Stress can affect not only the nervous system, but also the digestive, urinary, and other systems. Stress thins the bladder walls, leading to irritation and pain. As a result, cats experience difficulty urinating, and blood may be present in the urine.

The drug is also sometimes taken to prevent recurrence of the formation. bladder stonesThe product's components promote the restoration of the bladder's mucous membrane. Thanks to its proper functioning, salt crystals are unable to adhere to the bladder walls.

How to apply

The dosage of the drug is calculated based on the weight of the animal:

  • for cats weighing up to 3 kg, a single dose is 2 capsules;
  • for pets weighing over 3 kg – 1 capsule.

The medication is administered to cats daily. The capsules are hand-fed. If the pet refuses to eat the medication, the capsules are opened and the contents mixed with a small amount of food. For this purpose, it's best to choose wet canned food or other treats that the pet enjoys.

Treatment with the medication is continued for 2 weeks. If necessary, the course can be extended, but after 14 days, the Cystophan dosage is halved:

  • cats weighing more than 3 kg are given 2 capsules daily for 2 weeks, then 1 capsule per day;
  • Animals weighing less than 3 kg are given 1 capsule daily for 2 weeks, then 1 capsule every other day.

The duration of the course is determined by the doctor on a case-by-case basis. If the medication is used prophylactically, it should be started a few days before a potentially stressful event (travel, participation in a competition, a visit to the veterinarian), if idiopathic cystitis has occurred previously. Continue treatment for a few days after the stressful event. For the prevention of urolithiasis, two-week courses are repeated several times a year.

If Cystofan is used for therapeutic purposes, it is combined with antibiotics, painkillers, and other medications, depending on the symptoms. Additionally, it is necessary to ensure the animal is drinking plenty of fluids, keep the litter box clean, and follow other doctor's instructions.

Contraindications and side effects

Since Cystofan contains no toxic or hazardous components, it has no contraindications. It can be used to treat cats of any age and is approved for use in kittens, pregnant females, and lactating females. Since the medication does not adversely affect other organs or systems, it is used for a variety of chronic conditions. The capsules should only be discontinued in cases of individual sensitivity to any of the components, such as chicken flavoring.

The medication does not cause any side effects and is generally well tolerated by animals. The exception is an allergic reaction, which may occur due to intolerance to the ingredients. Among the disadvantages, it's worth noting the need for long-term administration of the medication. Treatment courses typically last at least two weeks, and for some animals, taking any medication can be a real ordeal. Another significant drawback of using Cystophan for cats is its high cost.

A bottle of 30 capsules costs around 700 rubles, and a bottle of 240 capsules costs over 4,000 rubles. Owner reviews

Mila, the owner of a 3-year-old cat:

"We used Cystophan when our cat developed cystitis after moving to a new apartment. Its effectiveness is difficult to judge, as we were undergoing complex treatment and taking a whole list of other medications. My Arnold turned out to be picky and refused to take the capsules voluntarily. Worse, he even refused to eat food if we added the powder. We had to force everything."

Svetlana, owner of a British cat:

"Our Lara is a terrible coward. Due to constant stress, she developed idiopathic cystitis. We treated the condition for almost a year with virtually no results. Improvements would occur for short periods, only to have the condition return again and again. This continued until we saw a doctor who prescribed Cystophan along with other medications. The cat improved within just a few days. We took the medication for a long time—two months—but the results are clear. Lara is back to normal and no longer plays pranks in the corners."

Veterinarian Reviews

Lyudmila Nikolaevna, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:

"Cystophan has appeared on the market relatively recently, but I have successfully used it to treat idiopathic cystitis. There have been no cases of allergic reactions or other side effects. Personally, I have noticed that treatments that include Cystophan produce visible results faster, so I can confirm its effectiveness."

Mikhail, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:

"A safe and effective remedy for cats with cystitis, which develops due to stress and anxiety. When I worked at a Moscow clinic, I always used it in my practice. Now I've moved out of town and work as a veterinarian at a private clinic. While getting Cystofan wasn't a problem in Moscow; it was sold in many pharmacies, it's become a real problem for me now. It's rarely available at my local pharmacy, and finding an alternative is difficult."
