DIY Dog Panties for Dogs in Heat

The heat period is a challenging time not only for a dog but also for its owner. Not only does it require extra attention, keeping it on a leash during walks, and keeping it away from other animals, but it also involves the appearance of bloody discharge, which requires home protection.

Some people advise limiting the animal’s movements around the apartment, removing carpets, and covering the floors with newspapers or diapers (you can also reusable)But a more practical option is sanitary dog pants with a special pad. These are especially helpful if your pet is used to sleeping on a chair or sofa. It's impossible to break them of this habit, and the pants will help prevent stains on furniture or carpets. You can buy them in a store or sew them yourself, taking into account your pet's body type.

The easiest option is to make it from tights

Choose children's tights in the appropriate size for your pet. The key requirement is that they contain elastane or spandex, which will provide elasticity and prevent runs.

  • We step down 5-6 cm from the crotch and cut off the stockings - the result is shorts.
  • We try it on the dog to mark the location of the tail hole, which can be made using any round object (such as a bottle cap). Keep in mind that the fabric will stretch, so it's best to make the hole small and overcast it immediately.

It is important to ensure that the elastic does not squeeze the stomach too much, and at the same time does not allow the underwear to fall off.

  • We process all cut areas with a simple fold and hem.
  • DIY panties for dogs in heat are ready.

The remaining pieces of the tights can be used as suspender straps if your dog is being cunning and trying to pull off the unfamiliar garment immediately after putting it on. To do this, sew them to the panties at the chest. To attach them to the back, first sew buttons to the waistband on the back and loops made from elastic to the ends of the suspender straps.

Dog panties with pattern construction

A more complex option is to sew panties using a custom-made pattern. To do this, you'll need:

  • fabric (you can use an old T-shirt or bed linen);
  • wide and narrow elastic band;
  • Velcro tape;
  • centimeter;
  • scissors.

Before you create a pattern, you need to take measurements to ensure you get a comfortable and safe fit. garmentFor the base, you can use the pattern shown in the picture, where:

  • AA1, BB1 – half the waist circumference;
  • AB, A1B1 – depth of the product (apply a centimeter to the back at a right angle on the waist line, extend to the tail and under it to the waist, but already from the side of the stomach).

Taking measurements

It is also necessary measure the distance from the waist line to the base of the tail to get the length of the tail slit (marked further with an “X” on the fabric pattern).

Cutting out the fabric

Using these measurements, draw a rectangle on the T-shirt. Mark the center of one of the smaller sides of the rectangle and measure down to point X—this will later become the tail opening. Along the long sides of the rectangle, mark the armholes for the hind legs, deepening them by approximately 4 cm. To get a more precise width, you can measure the distance between the hind legs (measured along the lower abdomen).

We cut out the resulting pattern along the armholes and smaller sections of the rectangle and make a cut to point X. Next, we measure the length of the elastic bands:

  • for a wide elastic band, measure a length 5-7 cm shorter than the waist circumference (for a tighter fit of the dog panties) and cut into two halves, which will be sewn along the waist line from the back and stomach side;
  • for a narrow elastic band, set aside two pieces 7-8 cm shorter than the armhole length.

Sewing in elastic

We finish the tail opening with a zigzag stitch, turning the edges under first. We place elastic along the armhole edges, also turning them under and finishing with a zigzag stitch, stretching the elastic slightly as we go.

Sewing on elastic

Now let's move on to the waistband: gently pull the elastic half so that its length is equal to the opening of the panties, and sew it to the front using a zigzag stitch. Next, baste the top of the tail opening and sew the second piece of elastic to the back in the same manner.

Sewing on elastic

We sew pieces of Velcro tape (about 4 cm) to the sides of the elastic waistband to make the panties easier to put on.

All that remains is to glue a sanitary pad to the inside and you can put the product on your dog.

The key to sewing dog pants is to consider your pet's size and select high-quality, breathable fabric, as synthetics can cause dermatitis or allergic reactions. They shouldn't be too tight, so as not to restrict circulation, but also not too big, so as not to slip down and interfere with walking. If your dog's gait doesn't change after putting the pants on, and there's no redness or marks from rough seams or elastic, you've successfully sewn the right pair of heat pants. Over time, your dog will stop noticing them, and these pants will fulfill their primary purpose—preventing red spots throughout the house and protecting against infections during walks.
