Trocoxil for dogs

Trocoxil – painkiller A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It has a strong anti-inflammatory effect and is most often prescribed for degenerative changes in bone and cartilage tissue (bursitis, osteoarthritis, etc.). Before using Trocoxil in dogs, read the instructions. The drug is potent and may cause side effects if the recommended dose is not followed.

Composition and release form

Trocoxil is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Its active ingredient is mavacoxib. This substance interferes with the production of prostaglandins, which are synthesized as a result of inflammation in the body. The mavacoxib concentration in the drug can vary, making it easy to tailor the appropriate dose to your pet's weight.

Trocoxil is available as light-brown, triangular tablets. The active ingredient concentration per tablet is available in 6, 20, 30, 75, or 95 mg. The tablets are packaged in blisters of two and packed in cardboard boxes. Each package includes instructions for use. The meaty aroma imparted by the flavoring agent significantly simplifies administration, as animals are attracted to this scent.

Pharmacological properties

Trocoxil has the following effects:

  • relieves inflammatory processes;
  • eliminates swelling;
  • relieves pain;
  • reduces body temperature when it rises.

A special feature of mavacoxib is that it acts on COX-2 and has virtually no effect on COX-1, therefore, in therapeutic doses, it does not affect physiological processes and the functioning of internal organs.

The drug is absorbed into the bloodstream fairly quickly from the gastrointestinal tract and begins to act within 1-1.5 hours. Peak blood concentrations of the active substance are reached 17 hours after administration. Elimination from the body takes 39 days. The drug is excreted virtually unchanged in bile.

Indications for use

Trocoxil is prescribed to pets as an anti-inflammatory or analgesic for:

  • bursitis;
  • osteoarthritis;
  • destruction or pinching of vertebral discs;
  • other degenerative processes of the joints.

A doctor should prescribe the medication after examining your dog and conducting the necessary tests. Self-medication or administering Trocoxil prophylactically is prohibited, as this can lead to an overdose, unpleasant side effects, and adverse health effects.

When using Trocoxil to treat dogs, a number of important rules must be followed:

  1. The drug can be taken no more than 7 times, meaning the duration of treatment should not exceed 6.5 months.
  2. You should not stop taking the medication even if you notice a noticeable improvement in your pet's health.
  3. It is strictly forbidden to exercise your dog while taking Trocoxil. After several doses, improvement may be observed due to the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of the drug, but the degenerative process may continue to progress slowly, so even the slightest exercise (workouts, long runs) can accelerate this process.
  4. It's best to administer the tablets to your pet during meals. This will reduce the impact on the digestive tract and reduce the risk of side effects.
  5. It is not recommended to skip doses of the medication, as this may lead to decreased effectiveness.
  6. If you failed to take the medication on time, you must resume treatment at the first opportunity and continue according to the prescribed regimen.

Trocoxil should not be administered concurrently with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or corticosteroids. Increased toxicity may be hazardous to your pet's health. If your pet has previously been given another NSAID, Trocoxil should be administered only after 24 hours.

Despite the medication's high effectiveness, its use is contraindicated in some cases. Contraindications include:

  • age up to 1 year;

Owner reviews

Ksenia, the owner of the Alabai:

"The doctor prescribed it for arthrosis. The course of treatment was 5.5 months. Our dog took the pills without any problems, and there were no adverse effects. However, the doctor warned that gastrointestinal upset, lethargy, and apathy were possible. He said that in such cases, we should contact him immediately. Now our beloved dog has recovered and returned to her normal routine."

Valentina, the owner of the Great Dane:

"The doctor prescribed Trocoxil for us for osteoarthritis. We were willing to pay the high price (the vet said it was well worth it), but it was out of stock in our small town. I can't judge the drug's effectiveness or safety, as we never used it. We were given Previcox instead."

Veterinarian Reviews

Mikhail, a veterinarian with extensive experience:

"In my opinion, it can be considered a safe medication when used correctly compared to carprofen-based medications. Like other NSAIDs, it can cause serious side effects. To prevent this, the animal undergoes tests to monitor vital signs before and during treatment. Furthermore, I recommend administering the medication with food. I always thoroughly instruct the owners on what to do if side effects occur, as prompt assistance is essential for their pet's health."".

Tatyana, veterinarian:

"Trokoksil is a modern and effective medication. It is widely used in orthopedics for cartilage damage in joints. It has a good analgesic effect. Owners of sick dogs report rapid improvement in their pets. When used correctly and at the correct dosage, it does not cause side effects. Clinical trials of the medication have shown that side effects only occur when the dose exceeds 1.5 mg per kilogram of the animal's weight."

  • A strange review from Tatyana, a veterinarian: “…side effects only occur when the dose exceeds 1.5 mg per kilogram of the animal’s weight…” But the recommended dose is 2 mg per 1 kg of weight!
