Varieties of tricolors

Tricolor colors can be very diverse, but among the many combinations, the following are the main ones:

  • The calico is a black and tan coloration with white spots located all over the body or in small patches. These spots can have distinct borders and overlap each other. This animal gives the appearance of being camouflaged, creating a unique and exotic appearance.
  • Harlequin is a coloring in which most of the body is painted in one color shade, and against this background, as a rule, “socks,” “caps,” and a tail of different colors or several separate spots on the body stand out.

Another name for these three-colored animals is a tortoiseshell cat with white coloring, since white is often the predominant color.

The cats' "tortoiseshell" name stems from the similarity of their coat pattern to that of the animals of the same name. To see this, simply look at their polished shell comb—when held up to sunlight, the resemblance is obvious.

The classification above is rather arbitrary, as nature doesn't always recognize patterns. It's important to understand that a tricolor coat can also be solid or patterned. In the former case, the black and red spots are uniformly colored. Patterned colors, however, can be very diverse and sometimes even subtle: only by gently blowing on the pet's fur can you see patterns in various combinations of white, black, and red shades. However, there are also cases where other, similar and dissimilar, shades are present.

Possible color combinations:

  • the first color is necessarily white;
  • the second color is red, brick, bright red, honey or cream;
  • third color – black, chocolate, gray, blue, purple.

"Tricolor" is a name for a cat's coat coloring that has no specific breed, but this unusual pattern is most often found in mixed-breed cats. However, some breed standards allow this type of coloring. These include:

Genetics

One of the most characteristic features of these animals is that the overwhelming majority of them are female, which is due to the fact that the inheritance of fur color is genetically linked to sex.

In the wild, felines have two color variations: red and black. The genes responsible for each are sex-linked and reside on the X chromosome at a specific locus. They contain only one gene: "O" for red, or "o" for the absence of red (i.e., black). Therefore, for offspring to be black and red, two genes, "O" and "o," must combine—that is, two X chromosomes.

The standard chromosome set for a female is XX, while for a male it's XY, so it's virtually impossible for a cat to be both black and red. The white gene isn't sex-linked, so bicolor cats (white and red or black and white) are not uncommon.

Because of this, calico cats are very rare, the result of a gene mutation that causes an extra X chromosome (XXY) in the sex chromosome. While these mutations can cause serious health problems in humans, they pose no harm to animals. Statistics show that there is only one kitten per 3,000 individuals. tortoiseshell Males. However, such cats are usually naturally sterile, as the abnormality of having two X chromosomes causes infertility. Tricolor cats, which can produce offspring, are even rarer—almost one in a million.

Why do calico cats bring good luck?

How can a pet's coloring be linked to happiness if a calico cat is a common animal, seen on the street any day? It's not the animal itself that matters, but the significance attached to its coloring. Each color reflects a specific energy:

  • white – means pristine purity, peace and freshness;
  • black – symbolizes victory over misfortunes and illnesses, and also protects from ill-wishers, intruders and evil forces;
  • Red - ensures joy, happiness, health, the ability to earn money and financial well-being throughout life.

When these three colors are present on one animal, their power is greatly enhanced. This unusual color combination is what imbues calico cats with magical powers and is considered a talisman of good luck.

Signs of different countries

Tricolor cats are revered by the traditions of many countries in the East and West:

  • In England, it is believed that tricolor pets bring peace, harmony, and protection from illness and adversity to the home.
  • In the United States, they are called money cats and are believed to bring wealth and material well-being into the home.
  • In Muslim countries, it is believed that the presence of the tricolor can protect a home from accidental fire.
  • In Japan, such cats are considered a lucky charm, so those who can't afford a pet buy special "maneki neko" figurines. These are called "welcoming" cats and depict a cat with a raised front paw. They are placed at the entrance to the home, welcoming prosperity and good fortune.

Tricolored pets are highly prized by sailors and fishermen, as they are believed to protect a ship from storms and wrecks, ensuring its safe return home. This belief stems from the fact that these animals are more sensitive to weather changes than other animals, and a sudden change in behavior signals approaching inclement weather.

Despite some differences in interpretation, they all have one thing in common: these unique animals bring good luck, health, and the fulfillment of wishes. Therefore, if a calico kitten comes to your home, you should never drive it away.
