Surolan - ear drops for cats
Surolan is a veterinary medication for the treatment of otitis. These ear drops for cats help eliminate bacteria, fungi, and parasites. This complex medication is formulated with several active ingredients, making it suitable even in cases of doubtful diagnosis, when symptoms point to one of the above-mentioned problems and immediate treatment is needed before further diagnostic testing is needed.
The substances contained in Surolan also help with bacterial and fungal skin diseases, which is why they are prescribed for dermatitis of varying severity.
Content
Description of the drug
The ear drops are available as an opaque, oily suspension. They are white in color and have a mild odor. The medication is packaged in glass or polymer bottles, sealed with dropper caps. The bottles are individually packaged in cardboard boxes with instructions in Russian.
Properties
Surolan has pronounced antifungal properties and is potent against gram-negative bacteria. It also has an antibacterial effect on gram-positive fungi. It also has antipruritic and anti-inflammatory effects, making the treatment more tolerable for animals.

The medication is classified as moderately hazardous. It does not irritate cats' skin and does not cause toxicity. The main thing is to use the medication as directed.
Almost all components are not absorbed. The small amount that enters the bloodstream is excreted in feces or urine.
Composition of Surolan ear drops
The drug consists of main and auxiliary substances.

Among the main ones:
- Miconazole nitrate. A synthetic substance that inhibits fungal growth and destroys bacterial membranes.
- Polymyxin. An antibiotic that destroys the surface of bacteria.
- Prednisolone acetate. A synthetic component of the glucocorticoid group. When applied to the skin, it relieves itching, promotes tissue healing, and reduces inflammation.
The formula's excipients include liquid paraffin and colloidal silicon dioxide. These maintain Surolan's consistency throughout its shelf life and ensure its consistent properties.
Indications for use
The medicine is prescribed for acute or chronic otitis, ear mites, and skin diseases.
The indications are as follows:
- inflammation of the outer ear;
- pyodermatis;
- dermatitis;
- dermatophytosis;
- infected wounds;
- purulent wounds.
It is also used to treat anal glands in cats.
How to use drops
The method of using Surolan depends on the diagnosis. The instructions for use are detailed.

For otitis
Before use, clear the ear canal of wax. Shake the bottle to even out the concentration. Place 3-5 drops into the ear at a time, then gently massage the base of the ear canal. This ensures the medication is distributed throughout the entire ear canal. Care should be taken when performing this procedure, especially if there is inflammation. If the cat tries to shake its head to remove the medication after administering Surolan, hold its head still for a few minutes.
The suspension is applied twice daily at regular intervals until symptoms subside. After this, the drops should be continued for another 3 days as usual. The overall course of treatment for otitis should not exceed six months.
In the complex treatment of ear mites with complications in the form of otitis the rate is the same.
For dermatitis
Before applying Surolan, the affected area and surrounding areas are cleaned of hair, dirt, dead tissue, pus, or blood. The drops are distributed over the entire wound surface.
This procedure is performed twice daily: morning and evening. The duration of the course depends on how quickly the cat's illness resolves. The veterinarian who prescribed the drops usually determines when to stop treatment. This depends on the depth of the lesion, how quickly the skin heals, etc. The general course of treatment should not exceed three weeks.

After applying Surolan, the animal will likely try to lick the medication. To prevent this, the cat is fitted with a restraining collar.
The medication must be taken strictly as prescribed, as missing doses can impair its effectiveness. If a dose is missed, it should be administered as soon as possible.
Side effects
Surolan is well tolerated by most cats when administered at the recommended dosage. Hearing may occasionally decrease when administered to the ear, but this returns to normal within a few days after completing the course.
An allergic reaction is very rare. If this occurs, discontinue the suspension immediately and give the cat antihistamines.
Contraindications
There are only two contraindications to the use of Surolan:
- perforation of the eardrum;
- allergic reaction to any of the components in the composition.
Features of application
The medication is well tolerated, so it can be used even during pregnancy. There's no need to interrupt lactation, either, as very small amounts of the medication enter the bloodstream and do not harm the offspring.

Surolan is prescribed to kittens starting from 2 weeks of age, but only after consultation and examination by a veterinarian.
Shelf life
The medicine can be used for 2 years from the date of production, but after opening the bottle it remains valid for only 3 months.
Analogues
If you experience an allergic reaction to Surolan or other reasons prevent you from using the drug, you can choose one of the following analogues:
- Otospectrin;
- Otibiovin;
- Oridermil;
- Mitex.
Cost of Surolan ear drops
Surolan is available in two sizes: 15 ml and 30 ml. The 15 ml size is recommended for cats, and the larger size is only prescribed if there are multiple cats and all require treatment. This is because the medication loses its potency after three months of opening.
You can buy the medication online, at a veterinary pharmacy, or at a pet store. A 15 ml bottle of Surolan drops starts at 800 rubles, and a 30 ml bottle starts at 1,200 rubles.
Reviews
Elena Zakharchuk:
"I have three cats, and their ears often get into trouble. I've started diagnosing them myself and buying the tried-and-true Surolan. It works great, especially if you start treatment right away. The vet first recommended it, but now I buy it myself."
Sergey Krivoruchko:
"We adopted a kitten, and something was wrong with his ears: they were clearly hurting. We didn't go to the vet, so we asked the clerk at the pet store what we could do. He sold us Surolan. The kitten started feeling better after just four days, but we kept giving him drops for a few more days just in case."
