Stomorgil for dogs

Stomorgil is a combination antibacterial drug for dogs developed by the French company Merial. The combination of two active ingredients provides a broad-spectrum effect and effectively kills various types of pathogenic bacteria.

Composition and action

These are pink-coated tablets for oral use. They are packaged in blisters of 10. A cardboard box contains two blisters and instructions for use.

The high effectiveness of the drug is due to the combination of two active components:

  1. Spiramycin is a macrolide antibiotic. It blocks protein synthesis in streptococci, staphylococci, listeria, clostridia, chlamydia, and other types of harmful bacteria. It is also capable of destroying mycoplasmas. It accumulates not only in the blood but also in saliva. Spiramycin concentrations in the blood reach their maximum levels 4-8 hours after administration.
  2. Metronidazole is an antiprotozoal agent. It inhibits the reproduction and development of harmful protozoa, including Giardia, amoebas, Trichomonas, and others. The substance is absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and reaches maximum concentrations in the blood within just an hour and a half. It is partially metabolized in the liver. Both components are mostly excreted in the urine, and partially in breast milk during lactation.

In the production of the medicine, auxiliary components are also used:

  • magnesium stearate;
  • sorbitol;
  • white dextrin;
  • starch;
  • aluminum hydroxide;
  • gelatin.

For ease of use and accurate dosage calculation, the manufacturer produces tablets in three versions:

  • Stomorgil 2 for puppies and small breed dogs;
  • Stomorgil 10 for medium-sized pets;
  • Stomorgil 20 for large breed animals.

Be careful when purchasing, as the difference lies in the concentration of active ingredients. Using more concentrated tablets for small dogs can make it difficult to calculate the correct dosage and prevent overdose.

Indications for use in veterinary medicine

Stomorgil is prescribed to dogs as part of a comprehensive treatment for oral diseases:

  • with gingivitis;
  • for stomatitis;
  • with periodontitis;
  • for pyorrhea, etc.

It can also be used to treat infections caused by bacteria, protozoa, and fungi sensitive to spiramycin and metronidazole. The drug is typically prescribed for acute or subacute conditions.

According to the 1976 GOST classification, this medication is classified as a moderately hazardous substance. If the recommended dose is not exceeded, it is not addictive and does not have a toxic effect on embryonic development. However, a veterinarian consultation is required before use.

The dosage of the drug is calculated based on the concentration of the active ingredients and the animal's weight. The following should be taken into account:

  • 1 tablet of Stomorgil 2 is designed for 2 kg of weight;
  • 1 tablet of Stomorgil 10 – per 10 kg;
  • 1 tablet of Stomorgil 20, respectively, per 20 kg.

The medication should be taken once daily. Tablets can be given hidden in food. It's best to choose your pet's favorite treat for this purpose. However, there's a high chance your pet will refuse the treat, so you'll have to force the medication. This can be done as follows:

  1. Open the animal's mouth.
  2. Place a tablet on the root of your tongue.
  3. Close your mouth, but keep your head up.
  4. Stroke the neck to encourage swallowing movements.

How to give a pill to a dog

It is not recommended to crush the tablets or add them to your pet's food as a powder. The strong bitter taste will cause your dog to reject the treat, and if eaten, excessive salivation will occur. Tablets should only be divided along the manufacturer's scoring lines.

The course of treatment lasts from 5 to 10 days, depending on the severity and stage of the disease, as well as the specific course of the disease. The duration of treatment and dosage should be determined by a doctor. Taking the medication for less than 5 days is not recommended, as bacteria can survive and adapt to the new conditions. Taking the medication in this case will be ineffective.

It's advisable not to miss a dose of the medication, as this may reduce its effectiveness. If this does happen, take the medication as soon as possible at the prescribed dose and then resume your previous treatment regimen.

Price

The price depends on the concentration of active ingredients. A package will cost:

  • Stomorjil 2 (20 pieces) – 760-865 rubles;
  • Stomorgil 10 (20 pieces) – 1300-1480 rubles;
  • Stomorgil 20 (10 pieces) – 1170-1260 rubles.

Contraindications and side effects

You should stop using the drug in the following cases:

  • in case of intolerance to the components, including in the anamnesis;
  • up to 2 months of age;
  • during lactation;
  • during pregnancy.

Sometimes the medication is given to pregnant and lactating bitches, but only after a veterinarian has weighed all the risks to the mother and fetus. Self-medication is strictly prohibited.

In case of chronic kidney, liver and heart diseases, the medication should be taken with caution and only under the supervision of a doctor.

In case of intolerance to the components, an allergic reaction may occur. This can manifest itself in various ways depending on the animal's individual characteristics, ranging from skin redness and itching to gastrointestinal disturbances. If any adverse reactions to the product's components are detected, further use should be discontinued. The animal is prescribed antihistamines and symptomatic treatment to eliminate such side effects.

If the dose is exceeded, the following side effects and effects may be observed:

  • diarrhea;
  • nausea and vomiting;
  • other disorders of the stomach or intestines;
  • depressed state;
  • increased salivation, etc.

According to the instructions, Stomorgil should not be used in dogs in combination with other macrolide and nitroimidazole antibiotics. Concomitant administration with alcohol-containing medications is prohibited, as metronidazole can enhance the effects of anticoagulants (blood thinners).

Storage rules and precautions

When storing medication, you should follow a few simple rules:

  1. The medicine should be stored in a dry place, protected from sunlight.
  2. The air temperature should be from 0 to 25˚C.
  3. The medicine should be kept out of the reach of children and animals, away from feed and food products.

  1. Wash hands with soap after contact.
  2. Sensitive people should use rubber gloves.

Owner reviews

Alexey, the dachshund owner:

"Our dog isn't very fond of hard food, but we had no idea the consequences. Due to the lack of mechanical brushing that occurs when eating hard food, tartar buildup and gingivitis developed. To treat it, the doctor prescribed a gel and antibiotic tablets. The medication was effective. Improvement was visible within a few days. After a 10-day course, the problem was completely resolved."

Victoria, the mongrel's owner:

"We found a sweet little dog on the street. She was barely able to stand. I tried to feed her at home, but she refused to eat. I noticed a foul odor coming from her breath. When I looked inside her mouth, I saw a terrible sight – her gums were black. The doctor prescribed Stomorgyl and a spray. The tablets were very effective. By the third day, the dog was eating food. We only feed her ground meat and porridge, since she has practically no teeth, but our little pup is on the mend."

Marina, the terrier's owner:

"Our dog has a serious problem—he periodically gets oral inflammation. Doctors can't determine the cause, but flare-ups are a real pain. The only thing that saves us is an antibiotic." "Stomorgyl. Expensive, but effective. The dog recovers quickly. No side effects."

Veterinarian Reviews

Vladimir, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:

"Stomorgyl is an effective antibacterial medication. Its main advantage is the combination of two active ingredients. The medication is effective in treating oral infections while being gentle on the animal's body. It rarely causes side effects and is well tolerated by both adults and puppies."

Inga, a veterinarian with 5 years of experience:

"An excellent product. It has a broad spectrum of action. I usually prescribe it to treat oral conditions caused by bacteria. And although the cost is quite high, it's well worth the investment. One course is usually enough to put the problem to rest for a long time."
