Dogs that look like foxes
Nature abounds with magnificent animals, but not all of them can be tamed. Because of the impossibility of domesticating certain animals, attempts have been made to imitate their traits among their relatives. Although keeping a fox at home is too much of a hassle for both owner and pet, a dog can be an alternative to this red beauty. Several breeds can fit the description of a fox-like dog. These are typically red-haired creatures with thick, fluffy fur, erect ears, and an elongated muzzle.
Shiba Inu (Shiba Inu)
A Japanese breed of fox-like dog, originally used for hunting, today the friendly Shiba Inu is primarily a companion dog, often adopted by families with children.

These are medium-sized animals, about 40 cm tall and weighing up to 10 kg. Their external resemblance to a fox is striking:
- red coat with white or black undercoat;
- elongated muzzle with tightly pressed lips;
- fluffy curled tail;
- small triangular ears that are always erect.
Shiba Inus are an ideal pet breed. They are not picky eaters, so they often eat potatoes, vegetables, and fruit. They have a medium-sized, wiry coat, but some dogs are very fluffy, which is mainly due to the seasons: spring and fall. the breed sheds, so they need to be brushed twice a day. Shiba Inus are very friendly and active, so simply taking them for a walk isn't enough. They love to play, but they're also smart enough to handle important tasks.
The cost of a puppy depends on the pedigree of the Japanese "fox." Purebred Shiba Inus suitable for showing at shows will cost $900 and up. Less demanding owners will have to shell out around $400.
Sheltie
These medium-sized dogs stand approximately 35 cm at the withers and weigh 7 kg. Many compare this red-haired, fox-like breed to a miniature collie. However, red isn't the only color in these creatures' palette. The traits that make this animal recognizable as a forest predator are easy to list:
- Red fur, as well as a mixture of brown, red and black colors.
- Long, elongated muzzle.
- Small triangular ears erect.

Shelties are a very fluffy breed, so they need to be brushed at least once a week, and daily during shedding season. They enjoy good health, but this requires proper nutrition. Surprisingly, puppies need more food than adults. Shelties eat everything from cereals and dairy products to meat, eggs, and vegetables. This breed is much smarter than the Shiba Inu and no less friendly.
Puppies cost around $300-400 in Russia. However, some breeders may even give away Sheltie puppies for free if the dog is not needed for breeding and does not have a passport.

Welsh Corgi
The Welsh Corgi is a recently popular dog with a fox-like appearance but short legs. These short creatures stand about 25 cm at the withers but weigh as much as an adult Shiba Inu. The key similarities between the Welsh Corgi and the fox include:
- red fur, although corgis themselves can boast of a variety of colors, it is in the red color that they are loved the most;
- dense and thick wool;
- elongated muzzle.

Welsh Corgis don't have the characteristic erect ears, as they are too large in proportion to their muzzle and tend to droop. These easy-going, short-legged pets are prone to obesity, so their diet should consist primarily of boiled vegetables and fermented milk products. Corgis are quite fragile creatures, so they should be allowed to run freely from time to time, but jumping is strictly prohibited.
Welsh Corgis, despite their small stature, are among the most expensive breeds. A puppy can cost upwards of $1,000. Finding a Corgi in a breeder is virtually impossible.
Pomeranian
A small dog that can easily fit in a girl's arms, as its weight usually does not exceed 3 kg with a height of up to 20 cm at the withers. Pomeranian Spitz They are very active and slightly arrogant, so they challenge dogs much larger than themselves. Their resemblance to a fox is determined by:
- red coat color;
- triangular ears sticking up;
- elongated and narrow muzzle;
- with a fluffy tail.

Despite their fluffy appearance, Pomeranians shed much less than medium-sized dogs. They are fed primarily dry food, but can occasionally be given cereal, apples, carrots, and small pieces of scalded meat. Although these small dogs thrive in apartments, they require occasional walks. Furthermore, they are virtually impossible to train indoors.
A Pomeranian puppy will cost around $500 from Russian breeders. They are generally bought not for breeding, but for companionship, as they are very active.
Other fox-like dog breeds
Not all foxes have the typical red coat. White, brown, and black foxes also exist in nature, so the list of fox-like dogs can be expanded to include several more breeds:
- The Keeshond is a medium-sized animal with relatively short legs and thick, beautiful fur of white or grey-black colour.
- The American Eskimo is a snow-white cat with excellent fur that is bred in several sizes from small to large, depending on the variety.
- Maya is a small and active husky-Pomeranian mix. This red-haired dog is very fluffy, but her muzzle isn't as long as that of a typical Pomeranian.

All breeds that resemble foxes have a very friendly nature. They are very active and friendly. Many shed heavily in the spring and fall. Although each breed was originally a hunting or herding breed, today fox dogs have become ideal companions and family pets.
