Generally, it's believed that a dog that has been adequately fed and hydrated can survive for 14 days if deprived of food, provided it continues to drink water. A healthy and reasonably well-fed animal can survive on a dry fast for up to a week. However, if the animal has been poorly fed for a long time, resulting in weakened and depleted bodies, it will survive for about 7 days without food, and no longer than 4 days without water.

Thus, the factors that influence how many days a dog can live without food include:

absence or presence of water - without drinking, the chances of survival are significantly reduced, as is the duration of this period;
health condition – an organism weakened by illness will be much less able to support life compared to a healthy one;
general condition of the body - if the body does not have sufficient reserves of vitamins, minerals, water and macronutrients, its energy will quickly run out, along with the ability to provide basic functions;
environmental conditions - in the cold, an animal spends a lot of energy on its own heating, so there is less strength left for survival, in addition, there is a high probability of death from hypothermia;
build and size – large dogs have greater endurance and can go much longer without food than small dogs.

The number of days a dog can survive without food is also largely determined by the breed. Service and hunting dogs, accustomed to deprivation, can go without food for longer periods without significant negative health consequences than toy dogs. Wolves, also members of the canine family, are a prime example. In the wild, they can easily survive without food for about three weeks.

Domestic animals are less resilient, although there are known cases of dogs living in an apartment without food or water for almost two weeks and surviving. However, this type of starvation is not considered complete dry starvation, as an abandoned pet may have found something to eat and drink. If food and water are completely absent, it would be impossible for the animal to survive for such a long period.

Consequences

Even if a dog survives a period of prolonged starvation and dehydration, its health will be adversely affected. In the best-case scenario, irreversible changes will still occur, resulting in malnutrition and digestive problems. The first sign of these pathologies is failure of the hind limbs, then the forelimbs. Only a qualified veterinarian can help such a dog, so if this is detected, it should be taken to a clinic as soon as possible. A pet in critical condition should be strictly restrained from food and water.

Important! If it's impossible to provide an exhausted animal with prompt veterinary care, you must help it yourself. To do this, administer 10 ml of saline solution subcutaneously, every 1 hour, to ensure the dog survives until it can be seen by a veterinarian.

If for some reason the pet has not eaten for only a couple of days, then it should be fed a moderate portion of porridge with meat. refusal of food within 3 days, the dog must be immediately shown to a veterinarian, since this is a consequence of internal pathological processes or will lead to the development of such.

To keep your pet in good shape, don't leave them without food for more than 24 hours. Regularly providing them with high-quality food and clean water is crucial. Without food and water, an animal can quickly become ill and die, so their diet must be carefully monitored.
