The second legend claims that a mountain called "Grey Cat Mountain" is located near the French city of Chartres, and these beautiful animals have supposedly inhabited it since ancient times. Confirmation of the breed's antiquity comes from a 1558 poem by Joachim du Bellay, dedicated to the death of a small kitten, and from a work by the French naturalist Georges-Louis de Buffon, which accurately described the Chartreux cat but referred to it as a "French cat."
