Genetics of the gray color
Interesting fact! Gray in male and female cats is a lightened version of black. The color appears when a dominant gene responsible for black color is combined with a recessive gene that produces lighter color.
All furry gray-furred cats, which ordinary people would simply call "gray kittens," are divided by felinologists into several groups depending on the characteristics of their fur color:
- blue color – deep, solid gray with a blue undertone;
- silver – the coat has a light gray shade with a lightened undercoat;
- smoky color – the hairs are dyed with an ombre effect (the color is almost white at the root and gradually turns into ash of varying intensity);
- gray-white - any patterns formed by these two colors.

Moreover, a smoky cat can have a wide variety of patterns:
- tabby (tabby) – with clearly defined stripes;
- with tipping (shaded or shell) – a chinchilla color in which only the tip of the hair is colored gray;
- ticked – the stripes do not form a clear pattern;
- calico - the pattern is random, formed by three colors with a predominance of gray, as well as interspersed with red and white (the vast majority of tricolors are cats, since the color is associated with the X chromosome).

The world around us is incredibly diverse and amazing. As you can see, even a "gray kitten" can have a coat unique in color and pattern. However, some breeds are only recognized in the standard as having a solid "blue" coat (for example, the Nebelung, Russian Blue, Korat, and Chartreux).
For many other breeds, grey coat (whether completely solid, patterned, or combined with other shades) is just one of the possible colour variations.

Eye color in gray cats
Interesting fact! A kitten almost always has striking sky-blue eyes due to low melanin production. The adult kitten's shade can be determined at around 3-4 months.
Some breeds only recognize a specific eye color as standard. For example, Tonkinese, Persian, Banman, British Shorthair, and Redgol breeds all have blue eyes. This trait is genetically determined, as these animals carry the "partial albinism" gene, meaning they produce very little melanin, the pigment responsible for fur and eye color.
Most often, those with naturally blue eyes, which remain throughout life, are almost white in color, with a small tint of gray.

In other cases, a gray cat may have yellow or green eyes. The shade, depth, and saturation can vary. Thus, within the noble yellow palette, there are:
- gold (light amber, which may appear yellow);
- orange (bright, burning);
- copper (dark, rich shade).
