Roncoleukin is an effective immunomodulator used for the prevention and treatment of various diseases in cats. This unique development was developed by the Russian company Biotech. The drug has minimal contraindications and is successfully used in animals of all ages and breeds for the treatment of various pathologies, post-surgery, developmental delays, and other conditions.

General description

The immunostimulant is produced as a liquid for injection. The sterile solution is typically packaged in 1 ml glass ampoules or 10 ml clear glass vials. It is a clear, colorless liquid. A slight yellowish tint may sometimes be present. Slight color change is acceptable.

Roncoleukin for cats

The immunostimulating effect of the drug is due to the fact that it contains human interleukin-2, which is obtained from yeast cells.

The drug's properties are preserved if certain storage conditions are met. It is important to keep the ambient temperature between 2 and 10 degrees Celsius. It is advisable to refrigerate the medicinal solution. The medication can be transported at temperatures up to 25 degrees Celsius, but it should not be stored at this temperature for more than 10 days.

Roncoleukin should not be used in cats in the following cases:

  • the solution became cloudy;
  • sediment or flakes appeared in the medicinal liquid;
  • the color has changed;
  • the consistency has changed (the solution has become viscous, etc.).

You should also stop using the medication if the packaging is not sealed, the label is missing, there is no expiration date, or there is no information about the ingredients.

Please note! Roncoleukin is available in several variants. The main difference is the active ingredient content. This content is measured in international units, designated IU. For example, one 1 ml ampoule may contain 50,000, 100,000, 250,000, or 500,000 IU of interleukin-2.

Price

When purchasing Roncoleukin for your cat, keep in mind that the price varies depending on the concentration of the active ingredient. The average price for a 1 ml ampoule in online pharmacies is as follows:

  • 50 thousand IU – 240 rubles;
  • 100 thousand IU – 300 rubles;
  • 250 thousand IU – 390 rubles;
  • 500 thousand IU – 670 rub.

Action and indications for use

The drug's primary action is aimed at stimulating the immune system. By strengthening the immune system, the animal's body develops resistance to viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other pathogens. Furthermore, Roncoleukin suppresses the activity of harmful organisms and accelerates the pet's recovery. For this reason, it is often used in combination with medications that target the underlying cause or symptoms of the disease.

  • inhibits the growth of cancer cells.

According to the instructions for use, Roncoleukin is prescribed to cats as part of a combination therapy for the following conditions:

  • at panleukopenia, parvovirus enteritis and other infectious diseases;
  • at bronchitis, pleurisy, pneumonia and other pathologies of the respiratory system;
  • at mycoplasmosis;
  • for viral diseases, including those occurring in acute form;
  • in oncology;
  • at stomatitis, gingivitis and other diseases of the oral cavity;
  • for skin pathologies (eczema, dermatitis etc.);
  • in sepsis;
  • at conjunctivitis;
  • for cystitis, polycystic kidney disease and other diseases of the genitourinary system;
  • for purulent inflammations of various origins, etc.

The drug is successfully used after operations and for various injuries:

  • in case of frostbite;
  • in case of lacerated injuries;
  • in case of fractures;
  • for severe bruises, etc.

It is also recommended for use during vaccinations. In this case, the drug helps build stronger immunity against viral diseases. This immunostimulant is also suitable for preventative purposes. It is advisable to use it during periods of high risk, such as during an epidemic. It is also suitable for preventing the unpleasant consequences of stressful situations. It can be used during travel, transportation, visits to the veterinarian, and other situations that may cause stress in pets.

Dosage

The instructions state that the dosage and administration schedule for Roncoleukin for cats depend on whether the drug is being used for treatment or prevention:

  1. If the medication is used to treat illnesses caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses, 2-5 injections are administered at intervals of 1-3 days. A single dose is 10,000–15,000 IU per kilogram of body weight.
  2. If your pet has been diagnosed with cancer, five injections will be required. The course is repeated after one month. A single dose is 15,000–20,000 IU per kilogram of body weight.
  3. To boost immunity in weakened or elderly animals, administer two injections, two days apart. 10,000 IU per kilogram of body weight is required. The course is repeated quarterly or semiannually, depending on the animal's overall condition.

How to weigh a cat

If Roncoleukin is used prophylactically, the dosage is calculated based on 5,000 IU per kilogram of body weight. The dosage regimen may be as follows:

  • when vaccinating, 1 injection is given 1-2 days before the vaccination or the medicine is administered simultaneously with the vaccine;
  • To prevent stress, Roncoleukin is administered once 2 days before an event that may cause changes in the animal;
  • to prevent complications after surgery, the immunomodulator is injected before or after surgery; if necessary, the injection is repeated after 48 hours;
  • To prevent infectious diseases, 1-2 injections are given at intervals of 2 days.

Injections are typically administered subcutaneously, after mixing the medication with sodium chloride (1.5-2 ml of sodium chloride is added to the ampoule contents). The medication can also be diluted with water for injection. Intravenous administration is also permitted. For the treatment of conjunctivitis, diluted Roncoleukin is administered 2 drops at a time. Nasal instillation of the immunomodulator is also permitted, which is particularly effective for acute respiratory infections. For skin conditions, applications of the immunostimulant can be used to accelerate the regeneration of damaged epidermis.

Please note! Your veterinarian will help you calculate the exact dosage. Consult a specialist before starting treatment.

The immunomodulator can be combined with antibiotics, antivirals, symptomatic medications, and other medications. Vigorous shaking of the ampoule is not recommended, as foaming may occur.

Limitations and side effects

This immunostimulant is approved for use in newborn kittens, elderly and weakened pets, and cats of any age. It is contraindicated only in cases of intolerance to any of the ingredients. If your pet has severe heart disease, consult a doctor.

If your pet has hypersensitivity or is at risk of developing an allergy, they should be given an antiallergic medication 30 minutes before the Roncoleukin injection. Only half the dose is administered immediately, and if the reaction is normal, the remainder is administered half an hour later.

Cats generally tolerate the medication well, but occasionally their temperature rises. The temperature usually returns to normal on its own; fever-reducing medications are rarely required. The injections are painful. After the injection, the injection site may be very sore. A lump may sometimes develop, but it resolves on its own. No special measures are necessary.

Please note: If the dosage is exceeded, your pet may experience a fever and increased heart rate.

Owner reviews

Valentina, owner of a British cat:

"We used Roncoleukin with Multifel, which we later deeply regretted. Firstly, the injection was very painful. Secondly, a lump appeared at the injection site that didn't go away for a long time, leaving a small bald spot in its place. Even though the instructions didn't mention any such side effects."

Rita, owner of a 10-year-old cat:

"Roncoleukin has been a real lifesaver for us. Our cat was given it when he was diagnosed with distemper, along with other medications. Honestly, his chances of survival were slim, but he overcame the disease. I credit the immunostimulant for that."

Veterinarian Reviews

Antonina, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:

"I almost never use Roncoleukin on cats because it's a very strong medication. It carries a high risk of allergic reactions, and the injections themselves are very painful. I've seen cases of hair loss at the injection site, so owners of long-haired breeds need to be especially careful with this medication."

Georgy, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:

"Roncoleukin is used in cats only for severe infectious diseases. I wouldn't recommend it as a preventative measure. It's better to choose a safer medication. Furthermore, with frequent use, it's more likely to weaken the immune system than to boost it. The immune system itself won't be able to cope with even minor problems without medication."
