Dog show leash: what it is and how to choose one
If you've recently acquired a puppy with potential for show jumping, it's helpful to learn about a dog show lead. We'll explain what this specialized equipment is, how a regular walking leash differs from a proper show lead, how to choose this piece of equipment for your pet, and how to use it correctly during training and at shows.

Exhibition equipment
International rules strictly prohibit showing dogs wearing prong collars and harnesses. Inexperienced owners sometimes show their pets wearing a regular collar on a walking leash, but professional handlers and experienced show dog breeders use a special show leash called a "show lead."

In fact, a show lead is a two-in-one system (a choke collar and a leash), allowing precise control and direction of the dog without distracting the judges' attention from the animal's appearance and movements.
From the name itself, you understand that such a special leash is needed specifically for dog shows, so buying this expensive accessory is not at all necessary for those who do not plan to show their pet.
Features of selection
Owners preparing their puppy for its first show naturally wonder how to choose the perfect lead for their dog, as the selection is quite wide, and prices start at 300 rubles and go up to sky-high.

When choosing a show leash, there are many factors to consider:
- the breed and size of the dog (in an emergency, the lead must be guaranteed to withstand the load);
- length of coat (metal and leather can create abrasions and spoil the appearance of a long-haired dog);
- color (ideally, it is recommended to select an accessory that exactly matches the shade of the coat).
Types of show rings
So, we've figured out why a dog show lead is needed and what it is. Now let's learn how to differentiate between the different types of show equipment.
Option #1 – noose
Perhaps the most popular option, it comes with or without a stopper. The loop can be integral with the leash or attached to it with a carabiner or other special fastener.
Nooses are:
- with a sliding loop (suitable for experienced handlers);
- with limiters of different formats (safer for the dog, since the limiter will not allow the loop to be tightened too much).

Solid ring-loops are preferable, since any fasteners are conspicuous and, as practice shows, are the most unreliable link in the structure.
Option #2 – loop
This collar is adjustable with a special ring on the loop, eliminating the need to purchase new equipment as your dog grows. This versatile design can be used for showing different breeds, depending on the material used.

Option No. 3 – rings with extension
Extension leashes are available in both loop and choke collar styles. These leashes are an excellent choice for Italian Greyhounds, Chinese Cresteds, Chihuahuas, and Toy Terriers.

Also, slings with extensions are often used for puppies at the initial stage of accustoming them to show equipment.
Material
Today, you can find ammunition made from a wide variety of materials on sale:
- nylon - the most inexpensive material, does not damage the coat due to its sliding properties, but is extremely short-lived and easily tears at the joints and mounting points, recommended for small or medium-sized dogs;
- cotton – ideal for small, long-haired dogs, but such a leash must have a special wax coating;
- leather – a durable and long-lasting material that can be found both in the mid-price segment and in the premium category;
- metal - recommended for large short-haired dogs (it is better to buy a "cobra" chain rather than a classic one; this type of weave will not catch on the animal's fur and leave abrasions).

Leash length
The show lead shouldn't be too long, but it should be long enough to control the dog in the kennel. For example, for a Yorkie or other small breed, a show lead of 1-1.2 meters is sufficient, while for a large and tall pet, 60-80 cm will suffice.
