Rabizin for cats

Rabizin - rabies vaccine, used for cats of various breeds. If used according to the recommended dosage, it can provide reliable protection against this dangerous disease. This product was developed by the renowned French company Merial, which specializes in the production of products for pets and farm animals.

General description

Rabizin is a colorless liquid. It appears slightly cloudy. If left standing for a long time, sediment may form at the bottom. This is not considered abnormal if the sediment disappears upon shaking.

Glass vials are used for packaging. They are sealed with rubber stoppers and then sealed with aluminum caps. The vials are then packaged into containers of 10 or 100, but pharmacies sell them individually rather than in packs. Each container contains 1 ml of liquid, which is equivalent to one immune dose.

The solution contains inactivated (non-living) cells infected with the rabies virus. However, it is important to maintain a temperature of 2 to 8˚C during storage and transportation. Freezing the solution is strictly prohibited, as it will lose its potency. Avoid exposing it to sunlight. It is best to store the medication in the refrigerator, on a separate shelf, away from food contact.

Important nuances

In some cases, Rabizin should not be used on cats or other animals, particularly if storage instructions have been violated. It should not be used in the following cases:

  • The bottle does not contain any information about the manufacturer, production date, composition, etc. There is no label.
  • The color or consistency of the solution has changed.
  • Foreign impurities (for example, in the form of flakes) have appeared in the liquid, which do not “break up” when shaken.
  • The packaging had previously been tampered with.

In all of the above cases, the vaccine must be discarded, but first decontaminated. To do this, boil the solution for 30 minutes. Vaccines that have not been used within 3 hours of opening are disposed of in the same manner.

How it works

Rabizin contains non-living cells infected with the rabies virus. When administered to an animal, it promotes the development of a strong immune system against rabies. Because it contains non-living cells, it is considered safe for animals, provided simple precautions are followed.

To build immunity, the solution is initially administered twice. Protection typically develops within 2-3 weeks, depending on the pet's individual characteristics (their immune system, overall health, and other factors). The solution provides protection for a year, so booster shots are required annually.

Vaccination schedule for cats

The vaccine has no therapeutic properties. It is used only for disease prevention.

Important! No vaccine, including Rabizin, guarantees 100% protection against rabies, but after vaccination, the risk of infection is significantly reduced.

Price

The price of one bottle of Rabizin ranges from 140-160 rubles. You can purchase the required number of bottles at a veterinary pharmacy, depending on the number of pets you have. The product is also sold in regular veterinary pharmacies and online. If you choose the latter option, the product will be cheaper, but there is a risk of purchasing an improperly stored medication. If you decide to buy the medication online, be sure to purchase it from reputable pharmacies to avoid risking your pet's health.

When and how to use

According to the instructions, the Rabizin vaccine is used for rabies prevention in cats. It is first administered to kittens aged 3 months and older. The vaccination is then repeated after 12 months. Subsequently, the animal needs to be revaccinated once a year. It is not recommended to extend the interval between injections by more than 12 months, as this increases the risk of infection. If vaccination is not administered on time for objective reasons, the animal should be vaccinated at the earliest opportunity.

Rabizin injections are usually given to cats subcutaneously, although it is also allowed intramuscular injectionThe solution is administered between the shoulder blades. The dosage is calculated simply: 1 ml (the contents of one vial) per pet, regardless of age and weight. When vaccinating, follow a few simple rules:

  1. Before use, shake the contents of the bottle well to make the mixture homogeneous.
  2. When administering vaccinations, observe aseptic and antiseptic precautions. Only sterile syringes and needles should be used for administering the solution. For cats, it is best to use insulin syringes with thin needles.
  3. If several animals are being vaccinated at the same time, a new sterile syringe must be used for each pet.
  4. 10 days before immunization, it is necessary to carry out dewormerFailure to follow this rule can lead to complications, as the immune system is weakened by internal parasites and therefore cannot cope with the vaccine.

What are the restrictions?

Rabizin can only be used on healthy animals. Sick or weakened pets should never be vaccinated. In such cases, the animal should first be treated for existing illnesses and then vaccinated against rabies.

Please note! This product can be used in cats during pregnancy and lactation.

Kittens can be immunized starting at 3 months of age. It is not recommended to use this medication concurrently with other vaccines and immunobiological agents. However, there is an exception: Rabizin can be used together with Purevax (a vaccine against chlamydia, rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia, and calicivirus). However, the medications must be administered separately. Do not mix the medication with other medications in the same syringe.

Are there any side effects?

If the vaccine's administration instructions and storage conditions are strictly followed, the animal tolerates the vaccination without problems. Vaccination typically doesn't affect the pet's activity or appetite. Rabies symptoms are not apparent.

A painful swelling sometimes occurs at the injection site. This usually resolves on its own and does not require special treatment. The instructions state that Rabizin can cause anaphylactic shock in cats. In this case, it is important to provide prompt first aid to your pet. An effective antiallergic agent should be readily available to block the reaction. This recommendation is especially important the first time you use the product, when the patient's reaction is unknown.

Precautionary measures

Rabizin is considered safe because it does not contain live infected cells. No special precautions are required when using the drug, but it is still advisable to follow general guidelines for handling veterinary medications.

If the vaccine accidentally comes into contact with a person's skin or mucous membranes, rinse them with clean running water. If the solution is accidentally injected, clean the injection site with alcohol and consult a doctor.

Owner reviews

Ksenia, owner of a Persian cat:

"I've been using Rabizin to vaccinate my cat for three years now. I have no complaints about the vaccine. We usually administer it together with Purevax, but with separate syringes. My cat tolerates the vaccinations well. He remains just as active, his appetite is normal, and I haven't noticed any other problems. I plan to continue using this product. I don't encourage experimenting with vaccinations, especially if they're well-tolerated."

Dmitry, owner of a Scottish Fold cat:

“They used to use it Nobivac "I used it for immunization, but recently the number of complaints about it on forums has increased, so I decided to look for another remedy. The vet suggested Rabizin as an alternative. We've only used it once (a couple of months ago), so it's difficult to judge its effectiveness yet, but there were no issues with tolerability. Overall, I'm satisfied."

Veterinarian Reviews

Svetlana, veterinarian from the Aibolit clinic:

"We used to vaccinate cats against rabies with Nobivac, but the number of rabies cases has increased significantly recently. I don't know if the manufacturer has started making a bad product or if a counterfeit has appeared on the market, but my colleagues and I decided to look for alternatives. I settled on Rabizin. I've been using it for almost six months now and haven't had any serious problems so far. It's not expensive, but it does its job well."

Andrey, veterinarian, 10 years of experience:

"This isn't a very popular vaccine, although I think that's undeserved. It's certainly no less effective and safe than Novibak or other well-promoted medications. Of course, for successful immunization, you need to follow simple rules. Some owners neglect them, leading to negative reviews. However, in 90% of cases, side effects or breakdowns are the owners' fault."
