Purevax for cats
Purevax (Purevax RCPCh) is a vaccine specifically designed for cats that helps build immunity against a number of infectious diseases, including chlamydia. It is successfully used on adult cats and kittens aged 8 weeks and older. It was developed by the French company Merial.
Content
General description
Purevax is produced as a lyophilisate (a dried, porous mass). The dry component, which must be reconstituted before use, is packaged in glass vials. To maintain the integrity of the vials, the vials are sealed with rubber stoppers and then sealed with aluminum caps. The dry component of the vaccine is a homogeneous, beige mass. It contains cells infected with herpesvirus, calicivirus, and the pathogen that causes panleukopenia and chlamydia. Gentamicin also serves as an adjuvant.
Each vial containing the dry component is supplied with a diluent. The liquid portion of the vaccine is water for injection, which is used to dilute the dry component. It has no effect on the development of immunity or the animal's overall health. It is packaged in 1 ml glass vials and sealed with rubber stoppers to maintain a hermetic seal.
Storage and use rules
To ensure the vaccine maintains its biological properties, or more specifically, its ability to induce immunity in cats against viral diseases, certain storage conditions must be observed:
- Vials should be stored at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius.
- Temperature control must also be observed during transportation of the vaccine.
- Containers with the product must not come into contact with food or animal feed.
If the product has been improperly stored, it is strictly prohibited to use it for vaccinating pets. You should also discontinue use of Purevax in the following cases:
- the color and consistency of the contents of the bottles have changed;
- there is no label on the container indicating the batch, production date and manufacturer;
- the packaging is not sealed;
- the thinner became cloudy.
Important! If Purevax has not been used within 20 minutes of opening, it should be discarded, but first disinfected. Boil the mixture for 10 minutes. A chloramine solution can also be used for this purpose.
Price
The Purevax chlamydia vaccine for cats costs approximately 500 rubles for two vials. Vials are sold in pairs—one dry and one liquid component. It's best to purchase the product from a regular veterinary pharmacy. When purchasing, pay attention to storage conditions. If you order the vaccine online for delivery, inquire about the shipping method. A portable refrigerator is required. Exposure to higher temperatures is not recommended, even for short periods.
Biological properties
After vaccination with Purevax, cats develop immunity to a number of diseases caused by dangerous viruses within 2-4 weeks. This immunity lasts for 12 months. To effectively protect your pet from panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, rabies, and other diseases, vaccinations should be repeated annually.
Purevax, like other vaccines, does not provide 100% protection against viruses, but the risk of developing the disease is significantly reduced. Furthermore, if infected, vaccinated animals tolerate the disease better and recover more quickly, provided they receive timely and comprehensive treatment.
Since the product contains non-living cells infected with viruses, it is considered harmless to animals. If the recommendations and simple rules of use are followed, it will not cause any complications.
Please note! Purevax has no therapeutic properties. It is used solely for prophylactic purposes – to prevent infectious diseases in cats.
When and why it is used
Purevax's primary purpose is to promote immunity against infectious diseases in cats. It is used to prevent the following diseases:
How to apply
The instructions for use for Purevax for cats provide detailed instructions. Just follow a few simple guidelines:
- The liquid and dry components must be mixed immediately before administration. The prepared solution should not be stored.
- During the procedure, it is necessary to adhere to the rules of asepsis and antisepsis.
- Ten days before vaccination, deworm your pet using appropriate anthelmintic medications. This should not be neglected, as parasites significantly weaken the animal's immunity, which can lead to complications after vaccination.
- Injections are given subcutaneously.
- If several animals are being vaccinated at the same time, a new sterile syringe must be used for each pet.
The dosage is calculated simply: 1 ml per animal, regardless of the animal's weight. To mix the contents of both vials, draw the liquid into a syringe and then inject it into the container containing the dry component. Shake the vial thoroughly until the mixture is homogeneous. Only then can the solution be administered to the pet.
The first injection is given at 8 weeks. To build strong immunity, the injection is repeated at 12 weeks. Boosters are then given every 12 months. It's important to adhere to the immunization schedule.
Please note! It is strictly forbidden to combine Purevax with other vaccinations. Only simultaneous use with the vaccine is permitted. Rabizin for rabies.
Limitations and side effects
Only clinically healthy pets can be vaccinated. The animal must show no signs of an infectious disease. Otherwise, the vaccine can only be administered after complete recovery. The vaccine should also not be used on the following categories of animals:
- weakened;
- exhausted;
- pregnant women;
- nursing;
- for kittens up to 8 weeks.
The presence of internal or external parasites is also a contraindication for immunization, as they weaken the body's defenses. As a result, the animal may be unable to cope with the "load" of virus-infected cells.
When Purevax is used in healthy cats according to the instructions, no symptoms of infectious diseases are observed. The following side effects may sometimes occur at the injection site:
- pain when pressing;
- swelling that can be easily felt with the hands;
- increase in temperature.
The local reaction usually resolves on its own within 1-2 weeks. Sometimes the animal refuses food and water and becomes lethargic and drowsy. A fever may develop. All symptoms resolve spontaneously within a few days.
Purevax may cause an allergic reaction. When administering the drug, have first aid medications on hand.
Owner reviews
Maria, owner of a 4-month-old kitten:
"When I got a kitten, I learned about the need for vaccinations. We went to the clinic. The vet recommended a product from a French manufacturer, explaining that it was safer. After the vaccination, the little one completely refused food and water. I had to give him fluids with a syringe, but it didn't help much because he kept vomiting. The kitten lay flat out and barely got up for three days, then slowly began to recover. Overall, it wasn't a great experience, and I won't be vaccinating my cat again."
Valentina, owner of a Siamese cat:
"Our cat had his first vaccination at seven months old. He slept all day after the shot, but had no other side effects. A week later, he started sniffling due to a stuffy nose. I thought it was the Purevax, but the vets dismissed my suspicions. To be fair, he recovered quickly after the prescribed treatment."
Veterinarian Reviews
Dmitry, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience:
"This is a multi-component vaccine that provides protection against several dangerous diseases. According to the instructions, it can be used from two months of age. Overall, it's a good product, but no one is immune from side effects. It's important to monitor your pet closely after vaccination and provide immediate assistance if necessary."
Zhanna, a veterinarian with 6 years of experience:
"Purevax is an excellent immunization for cats. If you follow the manufacturer's recommendations, complications are rare. Complications are usually caused by worms, chronic diseases, and other health issues. I always conduct a thorough examination of the animal before administering the injection. I've been using this vaccine for a long time and consider it one of the best. I recommend it to my clients."

Purevax RCPCh – Is it worth risking your cat's life and health?
________________________________________
I decided to vaccinate my cats with the relatively new and rather expensive Purevax RCPCh vaccine (manufactured by Merial, France), marketed as effective, safe, and adjuvant-free. Two to three weeks after vaccination, six of the eight vaccinated cats (aged 3 to 9 years) developed a fever (between 39 and 40 degrees Celsius) and began severely lame (developing polyarthritis); the cats refused food and water and were semi-lethargic. My poor cats lay there like rags. This nightmare lasted for three weeks! I was seriously afraid for their health and lives!
On the veterinarian's recommendation, I started giving injections of non-steroidal drugs (meloxivet), force-fed pate with a syringe, and injected Ringer's solution into the withers.
The Russian-language instructions for the drug don't mention any such complications. However, I found the official English-language instructions for Purevax for the European Union, where these side effects were listed as possible (though they were listed as rare). How rare can they be, when 6 out of 8 vaccinated cats experienced such complications? I contacted medical representatives, and they confirmed that complications from the Purevax vaccine have occurred, including in Russia, and some were fatal! Medical representatives point out that the chlamydial component of the vaccine can cause such a response.
Gradually, my cats began to recover (3-4 weeks after the onset of clinical manifestations of complications), but at what cost to me!
I decided to create this message to inform cat owners and veterinarians that this vaccine is not harmless. After all, other cats could also be harmed by Purevax. I will definitely not use it again and I don't recommend it to anyone! Is it worth risking the health and lives of cats?!
(P.S. I previously used the Nobivac Tricat vaccine, but it failed, and half of my indoor cats, who don't go outside, contracted calicivirus last year. So I decided to switch to Purevax.) The vaccines were purchased from an authorized distributor and were stored and transported under appropriate conditions. A veterinarian performed the vaccinations. The animals were clinically healthy.
