Procox for dogs

Procox is a comprehensive antiparasitic medication used for puppies and adult dogs with helminthic infestations. This effective, broad-spectrum medication was developed by the German manufacturer Bayer, which has a positive market reputation.

Release form and composition

Procox is a suspension. It can be white or yellow and is always packaged in glass bottles. Pharmacies offer 7.5 ml and 20 ml bottles of the suspension. Smaller bottles are suitable for puppies, while larger bottles are suitable for large adult animals. Regardless of capacity, bottles are always supplied with an adapter and a child-resistant cap.

The drug effectively copes with the destruction of nematodes and coccidia, as it contains two active components:

  • emodepside;
  • toltrazuril.

In addition to the active ingredients, the suspension also contains auxiliary components, including butylhydroxytoluene, sorbic acid, and others. One of the additional components is sunflower oil, which gives the medication a pleasant taste for animals.

Price

The price of Procox depends on the size of the bottle:

  • 7.5 ml – about 500 rubles;
  • 20 ml – about 1300 rubles.

The medication can be purchased at any veterinary pharmacy. A prescription is not required. Smaller town pharmacies may not stock the medication. In this case, it's best to choose a different medication. You can also order the medication online.

Pharmacological properties

The broad spectrum of action of Procox is due to the complex action of two substances:

  1. Emodepside effectively kills roundworms. It is active against adult nematodes of various species, with the exception of Toxocara canis. The drug kills this species of worm at all stages of development, from eggs to adults.
  2. Toltrazuril has pronounced coccidiocidal properties, meaning it can destroy coccidia. It kills parasites at all stages of development. It works by blocking enzymes in the respiratory system. This disruption of this system prevents the parasites from dividing their nuclei and further reproducing.

Emodepside is absorbed in the stomach and intestines. This process occurs quite rapidly, reaching its maximum concentration in the body within just 2 hours. The substance accumulates most in fatty tissue. It is excreted unchanged from pets, primarily in feces. Toltrazuril is unique in that it is absorbed slowly and is eliminated from the body after metabolism.

The medication is classified as a low-hazard substance, but is toxic to fish, so it must be disposed of according to the law. When using Procox for dogs, it is essential to strictly follow the instructions and adhere to the recommended dosage.

Indications for use

Procox is used for dogs and puppies for therapeutic purposes against helminthic infestations caused by coccidia or roundworms:

The drug can also be used to prevent the above-mentioned diseases.

Dosage and administration

According to the instructions, Procox is given orally to dogs once. For severe infestations, a second dose may be necessary, but not earlier than 14 days after the first dose and only as directed by a veterinarian.

The dosage is calculated based on your pet's weight. 0.5 ml of suspension is required for every kilogram. The instructions for use include a detailed table of recommended dosages. It's also recommended to consult a veterinarian to rule out the possibility of overdose.

Disposable syringes are used to measure the medication. If the suspension is used for puppies or dogs weighing up to 4 kg, syringes with 0.1 ml markings should be used. This will help accurately measure the required amount of medication. For pets weighing over 10 kg, syringes with 0.5 ml markings can be used.

Calculating Procox based on a dog's weight

Please note! A new syringe is used for each treatment. It cannot be used for other medical or household purposes. It must be disposed of immediately after use. Different syringes are used for different animals.

To measure out the required amount, you need to do the following:

  1. The suspension in the bottle must be shaken thoroughly, as it may separate during storage.
  2. Unscrew the cap and insert the syringe into the adapter.
  3. Tilt the bottle and draw up the required amount of suspension using the syringe.
  4. Return the container to an upright position and then remove the syringe.

Force the medication into the animal's mouth using a syringe. Make sure the dog swallows the medication and does not spit it out.

Important points

Procox effectively kills parasites but does not eliminate the symptoms of coccidiosis. Therefore, your doctor may prescribe symptomatic treatment when treating the infestation. Do not self-medicate, as this antiparasitic drug is not compatible with all medications.

To ensure that the use of the medication is effective, it is necessary to adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. When using Procox for treatment, it is necessary to treat the animal's living quarters for parasites. This will help prevent re-infestation.
  2. If a kennel has an unfavorable coccidiosis situation, the suspension is administered to all dogs admitted, including puppies aged two weeks and older. This preventative measure reduces the risk of spreading the disease.
  3. It's important to strictly follow the medication's dosage regimen as prescribed by your doctor. Otherwise, its effectiveness may be reduced.

Contraindications

Although Procox is considered safe, it has a number of contraindications. It should not be used in the following cases:

  • for puppies under 2 weeks of age;
  • for puppies weighing less than 400 g;
  • for pregnant bitches;
  • for lactating females in the first two weeks after giving birth;
  • in case of intolerance to the components of the drug.

You should also avoid using the drug if you have acute or chronic kidney or liver diseases, as these organs are responsible for removing the active components of the drug from the body and, when weakened, may not be able to cope with this task.

Please note! Procox should only be given to puppies of bobtail, collie, sheltie, and other breeds known to be hypersensitive to emodepside under veterinary supervision.

The suspension should not be administered together with prednisolone, ivermectin, or cyclosporine, as this may increase the toxicity of the drug.

Side effects

Animals generally tolerate the medication well. Side effects are rare and typically involve only digestive system problems:

  • vomiting;
  • loose stools;
  • nausea.

Similar symptoms also occur with overdose. Side effects usually resolve on their own and do not require special treatment.

Storage rules and precautions

The medicine must be stored in accordance with simple rules:

  1. Do not allow the suspension to freeze.
  2. Storage temperature should not exceed 25 degrees Celsius.
  3. Choose a dry place for storage away from sunlight.

Important! Once opened, the suspension can only be used within 10 weeks; after that, it must be discarded.

For safety reasons, do not store this medication near feed or food products. Keep it out of reach of children and pets.

When handling Procox, it's important to follow safety precautions. After handling the medication, wash your hands with soap to prevent ingestion. If the suspension comes into contact with mucous membranes or the skin, rinse with water. If an allergic reaction occurs, consult a doctor and take the medication packaging with you.

Owner reviews

Svetlana, the owner of pugs:

"My pug often had a cough. I attributed it to the breed, but when she gave birth and the puppies showed similar symptoms, I went to the vet. After an examination, it was discovered that parasites were the cause. The vet prescribed Procox. Its main advantage is that it can be given to both adult dogs and puppies. Repeated tests showed no worms."

Daria, owner of a cocker spaniel:

"I used Prazitel suspension for puppies before, but the last time it caused severe diarrhea in the puppies. I decided to look for a different product and settled on Procox from a German manufacturer. I was pleased with the results. There were no side effects. And although the price is quite high, effectiveness and safety are paramount."

Veterinarian Reviews

Alexander, a veterinarian with 6 years of experience:

"An excellent antiparasitic medication for puppies, although it can also be used on adult dogs. Personally, for larger pets, I recommend using tablets, such as Drontal or Cestal. When used correctly, Procox is usually well tolerated by animals."

Dmitry, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience:

"Procox has many advantages – it can be used on small puppies, it's safe, and doesn't cause any side effects. It's also easy to use, and measuring the correct dose is simple. The only drawback I see is the high price (domestic medications are cheaper), but it's not worth skimping on your pet's health."
