Dachshund mix: designer breed or mixed breed?
Hybrid "designer" dogs first became a topic of discussion in the 1980s, when American breeders began crossing purebreds of various breeds to combine certain appearance or character traits in their offspring. Over time, this became increasingly common and affected all the most popular breeds, including, of course, dachshundThus, puppies from purebred parents with documents are called "designer", but if they are born from dogs without a long pedigree, they can only be called crossbreeds.
The value and popularity of different mixed-breed breeds varies. If high-selling dogs with multiple titles were used in breeding and their hybrids are in demand, the price of puppies can reach $1,500. Special clubs register such puppies, and hybrid shows are even held. In Russia and many other countries, such crossbreeding is not as popular as in the United States. Mixed-breed breeds are often the result of random matings between dogs without papers and are considered mongrel. They are given away for free or for a nominal fee.
Dachshund crosses with other breeds can inherit the appearance and personality traits of their parents in unpredictable ways. Potential owners should familiarize themselves with the characteristics of both breeds to know what to expect from their pet.
Contrary to popular belief, hybrids are not exceptionally healthy dogs. They can inherit any breed-specific diseases from their parents or suffer from acquired ones.
