DIY cat pillow

A unique decorative pillow can liven up even the most formal and understated interior. This is especially true when it comes to pillows shaped like a pet, such as a cat. After all, cats, as guardians of the home, are a kind of talisman for their family members. A handmade cat pillow will not only decorate any room but also make a wonderful gift for a loved one.

How to make a cat pillow

There are many options for making a decorative cat pillow yourself. Just decide what you want this fashionable piece to look like and get started.

First you need to prepare the following materials:

  1. Pattern. The pattern can be printed or simply transferred to graph paper.
  2. Fabric. The choice of fabric for such a product is truly unlimited – it can be fleece, velour, or cotton in any color.
  3. Threads, needles, pins, chalk and scissors.
  4. The pillow is filled with synthetic padding and hollow fiber. Natural materials such as buckwheat husk and sawdust are also used.
  5. Materials for decoration: buttons, colored scraps, floss, beads, glue.

Important: If the pillow is purely decorative, buttons and other plastic details can be used for trim (like the cat's eyes). However, if the pillow is going to be used for its intended purpose, it's better to use fabric and colorful embroidery.

Classic version

A handmade fabric cat pillow will look beautiful on a sofa, armchair, or bed. When choosing the color of the material, you can match the shade of your furniture's upholstery, so the pillow will blend perfectly with the interior.

The first step in the manufacturing process is choosing a pattern. The suggested pattern can be downloaded, enlarged to the desired size, and printed on paper.

Then the pattern should be transferred onto the fabric folded in half and secured with pins.

The fabric is cut along the contour, resulting in two pillow pieces.

Important! When cutting, be sure to leave 1 cm for seam allowance.

Before you start sewing the pillow pieces together, you should design the cat's face - eyes, whiskers and mouth.

To do this, cut out two circles from white fabric (you can use felt) and sew them onto the front side of the pillow. In the center, embroider pupils or sew on small black buttons.

We embroider the cat's whiskers and mouth with black and red floss threads.

The two resulting pieces are sewn together. An opening is left at the bottom of the future piece for turning it inside out and stuffing.

After turning the pillow right side out, begin stuffing it with synthetic padding or hollow fiber through the opening. Adjust the amount of stuffing yourself, depending on the desired softness.

We sew up the hole with a blind stitch.

Bolster pillow

This is one of the easiest ways to make a DIY fabric cat pillow.

Foam rubber, holofiber, and synthetic padding can be used as filler.

Important! Foam rubber can lose its shape with prolonged use, while hollow fiber or synthetic padding are more durable. Buckwheat hulls are also a great option, as they will give the pillow orthopedic properties.

Once you've decided on the filling, you can begin making your own cat pillow.

The algorithm of actions will be as follows:

  • the fabric is cut into a rectangle, the length of which will be equal to the length of the pillow;
  • the sides that form the width of the rectangle must be processed and folded to form a drawstring;
  • the rectangle is sewn from the inside out and turned inside out;
  • the resulting cylinder is filled with filler;
  • the cord should be threaded through the drawstring and pulled together at both ends, securing it with a knot;
  • for the head, you should sew a ball out of fabric (cut it out and gather it on a thread), and sew on the ears - triangles - and embroider the muzzle with floss thread;
  • for the tail, a piece of fabric is sewn in the shape of a narrow rectangle and stuffed with filler;
  • The cat's head, body and tail come together.

The simplest cat pillow

This method does not require any special patterns and is suitable for those who do not like curved stitches and complex lines.

However, a simplified version of the cat pillow will look no less original and serve as a worthy decoration for any interior.

Any rectangular piece of fabric, similar to the kind you'd use for a regular pillowcase, will work. It's best to combine two shades of fabric to give the piece a festive and cheerful look.

  1. Sew white felt circles onto the front for the cat's eyes. For the pupils and nose, use black felt or another thick fabric that won't fray at the edges.
  2. The mustache is embroidered with floss thread.
  3. Two triangles are sewn into the top seam of the resulting product – the ears of the future cat.
  4. The pillow is stuffed with filling through the hole left at the bottom of the pillowcase.
  5. The opening is sewn up. A concealed zipper can be sewn in if desired.
