Neva Masquerade catteries

The Neva Masquerade cattery is such a special place that it's hard to leave without falling in love with its inhabitants. No one will remain indifferent to these gorgeous cats with ocean-blue eyes and a luxurious, fluffy tail. Neva Masquerade cats quickly find homes and become the best friends of the family. Our article will help you understand what makes this breed so appealing and where to find a healthy, purebred kitten.

About the breed

Neva Masquerade cats are a source of national pride in Russia, as their history is closely linked to Siberian domestic cats, known since the time of Peter the Great. This means the breed is approximately 300 years old, which isn't actually that long, but it is the beginning of Russian felinology.

Neva Masquerade cat

Thanks to the painstaking work of breeders, standard breeds were established in the late 20th century, and Siberian and Neva Masquerade cats were recognized internationally. The first purebred Neva Masquerade cats appeared in St. Petersburg around the 1980s, receiving part of their name in honor of the beautiful city on the Neva River and the other part for their elegant coat. Work on the breed then continued in Moscow, where a large number of Neva Masquerade catteries currently operate.

How does the Neva Masquerade differ from the Siberian cat? Some international feline organizations consider it a separate, albeit sister, breed, but in fact, the Neva Masquerade has the same standard as the Siberian, differing only in its elegant Siamese coat.

Appearance

Having retained the full genetic makeup of its Siberian relative, the Neva cat possesses a remarkable appearance that evokes genuine admiration: a large, stately body, colorpoint coat, beautiful, thick fur, a rich ruff, and a luxurious tail. The muzzle appears adorned with a masquerade mask, lending depth and expressiveness to the enormous blue eyes. The paws, ears, and tail can also be darkened or decorated with a striped pattern, echoing the Siberian cat's brindle pattern. Males of this breed are larger than females, who are very graceful and elegant.

Character

The Neva Masquerade cat's noble and proud appearance may seem stern at first glance, but in reality, members of this breed are gentle, kind, and patient companions for both adults and children. They are intelligent, playful, and sociable, yet completely unobtrusive. The Neva Masquerade is a good listener, and will dispel any anxiety or sadness with its melodic purr.

Risk of allergies

This breed is considered the least allergenic, as the saliva and skin proteins of the Neva Masquerade cat contain minimal amounts of the Fel D 1 protein, which causes allergic reactions. Interestingly, male cats shed more allergens than female cats. Neutered cats of both sexes become less allergenic.

Advantages of the nursery

Why is it better to get a kitten from a certified Neva cattery rather than from a private seller or a bird market?

Novice cat owners looking to buy a pedigree kitten often have no idea what a cattery actually looks like. They imagine it as a room filled with cages and enclosures where cats, male cats, and kittens languish. But in reality, a cattery is a perfectly ordinary house or apartment where purebred representatives of a particular breed live alongside people: they roam freely, play, interact with each other, and even sleep with their owners.

Fluffy cat

These nurseries have specific characteristics that determine the quality of the breed and the animals' compliance with standards:

  1. A breeder must have specialized training—they are felinologists who conduct breeding work to improve and stabilize the breed, carefully select mating partners, are able to determine the quality and pedigree of kittens, and possess knowledge and skills in all matters related to cats, since each subsequent generation of kittens must surpass the previous one in all characteristics.
  2. The nursery does not accept animals from the street – it is not a shelter.
  3. The cattery owner raises each kitten as if it were his own, not skimping on quality food, medications and vitamins, hygiene products, and veterinary services.
  4. A cattery must be registered with at least one felinological system (for example, WCF) and be a member of a cat fanciers' club, which issues all documentation for the cattery, pedigrees, kitten metrics, and titles for adult cats.
  5. The staff will always inform the kitten's future owner about its pros and cons, and will also guide them through all the intricacies of caring for the animal.
  6. Breeders are required to participate in exhibitions, where they receive expert evaluation of each exhibited cat and receive permission to breed the breed.
  7. Upon the client's first request, any of the cattery's employees is obligated to provide documents confirming the organization's registration, all certificates for the titles of the couple whose kittens are offered for sale, as well as permission to breed.

What is WCF?

The World Cat Federation is an international association of feline clubs founded in 1988 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and registered as a European organization in Germany and Belgium. The WCF comprises over 540 clubs from various countries.

The Federation is a member of the World Feline Congress. It has four commissions: Standards, Judging, Auditing, and Show.

The activities carried out by the federation include:

  1. Registration of nurseries.
  2. Training and licensing of judges.
  3. Development and approval of breed standards.
  4. Issuance of exhibition licenses.
  5. Monitoring compliance with exhibition rules.
  6. Expansion and strengthening of international relations.

Importantly, WCF President Anneliese Hackman is a Member of the European Parliament, allowing the federation to participate in discussions on any laws concerning animals.
