Pinscher: a separate breed or a group?
Pinscher isn't a separate breed; it's the name of a group that includes five dog breeds developed in Germany. Besides their country of origin, they share similarities in appearance and temperament. The largest Pinscher is the Doberman, and the smallest is the Miniature Pinscher.

The place of Pinschers in the FCI classification
All Pinschers belong to the 2nd group, which is called "Pinschers, schnauzers, Molossoid breeds, and Swiss Cattle Dogs. This group is quite diverse and numerous, so it is divided into several subgroups. The subgroup we are interested in is "Pinschers and Schnauzers." These dogs are similar in characteristics to shepherds. All breeds, including juveniles, are working dogs, service dogs, and are at least trainable. Most breeds were developed by crossing with terriers.
Originally, all Pinschers were bred as guard dogs, ratters, security guards, and farm assistants—in short, moderately specialized dogs. Today, they are used as service dogs or simply as companions.

General characteristics of pinschers
Pinschers boast an athletic build, well-developed muscles, and strong bones. They are very resilient and capable of a variety of movements, including high jumps and sharp turns while running. Pinschers have short hair, so they can only live outdoors year-round in temperate climates.
Common character traits include alertness, courage, devotion to their owner, and a wary attitude toward strangers. Dogs in this group have a lively, energetic temperament. They have a well-developed territorial instinct and a keen sense of prey. They can be aggressive toward other dogs. Pinschers are cheerful, energetic, and full of excitement and enthusiasm, but require supervision and proper training. They are suitable for various dog sports and are best suited for active people. The photo below clearly shows the appearance and similarities between the Pinschers.
Dog breeds that belong to the Pinscher group
Cynologists believe the name "pinscher" comes from the English word "pinch." What exactly breeders intended by this is debatable. One theory is that it was intended to alter the dog's appearance; traditionally, Pinschers had their ears and tails "pinched." But it's also possible that it was intended to change their behavior and character; all the proud little guard dog could do was nip a leg. This certainly doesn't apply to the Doberman, but then, it appeared much later.
Dog breeds that belong to the Pinscher group:
- Austrian Pinscher;
- Affenpinscher;
- German Pinscher;
- Doberman;
- Zwergpinscher (miniature pinscher).
Below we will get to know all these breeds in more detail.
Austrian Shorthaired Pinscher
Austrian Pinscher – a rare breed, little known outside its homeland. They are believed to have been developed in Austria from older Pinschers and local dogs. They were recognized as a distinct breed in 1928.
As you can see in the photo, the Austrian Pinscher is a short, stocky, medium-sized dog with a strong, densely coated tail held in a ring. The height at the withers is 40-50 cm, and the weight is up to 18 kg. The coat is short and lies flat, with the topcoat ranging from short to medium in length. The undercoat is short and dense. It comes in four colors: reddish-brown, brown-yellow, fawn, or black with reddish markings. White spots may appear on the chest, neck, paws, muzzle, and tip of the tail.
Austrian Pinschers were popular among farmers for a long time. They are hardy, active, and cheerful, loyal to their owners but do not consider humans to be authority figures. They are very independent and stubborn. They can be helpful in hunting foxes and rabbits. Austrian Pinschers are very independent and require ample exercise and space.
The average cost of a rare breed puppy is 40,000 rubles.

Affenpinscher
Affenpinscher The Monkey Pinscher is particularly popular in Germany and France. It is believed that they descended from Schnauzer-type farm dogs. Pugs, Pinschers, and Belgian Griffons also contributed to the breed's development. It was recognized as a distinct breed in 1896.
Affens stand out from other Pinschers. They are small, strongly built, with long, wiry hair and a flat, "monkey-like" muzzle, almost completely hidden by thick eyebrows, a mustache, and a beard. Incidentally, the word "Affen" means "monkey" in German. They stand 25-28 cm tall and weigh no more than 6 kg. Their coat consists of a short, dense undercoat and wiry hair at least 2.5 cm long. Only one color is permitted: black. The dog's undercoat must also be black.
Despite their size, Affenpinschers are quite active and require regular walks. They are courageous, strong-willed, and stubborn. Like other Pinschers, they are fiercely protective of their territory, toys, and food, and may snap or even bare their teeth. Therefore, it is not recommended to have an Affenpinscher as a companion for very young children.
An Affenpinscher puppy isn't cheap. A breeder puppy will cost between 70,000 and 100,000 rubles.

Doberman
People are often surprised to learn that the Miniature Pinscher is not a miniature version of the Doberman, but rather the opposite. The breed's creator, Friedrich Louis Dobermann, decided to create a larger and improved version of the smaller Pinschers. He began his work in the mid-19th century. Beaucerons, German Pinschers, Rottweilers, and some hunting dogs contributed to the development of the Doberman. The breed became an independent one in 1863. Initially, it was called the Thuringian Pinscher. The dogs became known as Dobermans after the death of their founder.
Dobermans These are large, strong dogs with a robust build. They possess a perfect combination of strength and grace, emphasized by their proud posture. They stand 60-70 cm tall and weigh 35-45 kg. Their coat is harsh, short, and straight, with no undercoat. Two colors are permitted: brown and black and tan.
Representatives of the breed are typically very temperamental and do not hide their emotions, but they know how to control themselves. Dobermans are fearless and vigilant guard dogs who, unlike other Pinschers, can put up a serious fight against intruders. Overall, they are excellent guard dogs and loyal companions.
In many countries, Dobermans are used for service work in the police, army and customs.
The price of a Doberman puppy in a breeder's store ranges from 25,000 to 40,000 rubles. Since the breed is so common, it's easy to buy a dog without papers at a pet market or online. These puppies typically cost no more than 10,000 to 15,000 rubles.

German Pinscher
German Pinschers They appeared in Germany in the 18th century and are considered the ancestors of all Pinschers except the Austrian Pinschers, with which they developed in parallel. No information remains regarding their ancestors. It is only known that the breed began to spread from the southwest of the country, where so-called marsh dogs were common.
Pinschers were widely used by farmers and later by stagecoach owners. The dog was noted for its endurance and work ethic, capable of tirelessly running behind a carriage all day while keeping an eye on the property. The breed was officially recognized in 1884. Today, they are more often kept as companion dogs; the breed is quite rare. The German Pinscher is also known as the Standard Pinscher. In appearance, the German Pinscher is very similar to the Doberman and the Miniature Pinscher. The most striking difference is its size. Height is 45-50 cm, weight 14-20 kg.
German Pinschers cost an average of 20-25 thousand rubles.

Miniature Pinscher
Miniature Pinschers They appeared in Germany around the same time that standard-sized Pinschers began to be actively bred. These small dogs quickly gained popularity because they were no less talented at catching rodents and just as selflessly protective of their owners and property, while eating considerably less. Over time, these small dogs quickly spread throughout the country and migrated to cities, where they became exclusively pets. A Pinscher fanciers' club was founded in Germany in 1895.
A miniature Doberman is usually chosen by those hesitant to own a larger dog. The Miniature Pinscher has the same traits, but is more temperamental, and their territoriality and aggression toward other dogs often become a problem. The Miniature Pinscher is a perpetual motion machine.
The dogs' refined appearance is perfectly matched by agility, endurance, and well-developed muscles. They possess incredible agility. Apparently, the infusion of Italian Greyhound and Dachshund bloodlines is evident. Miniature Pinschers should not exceed 30 cm in height and weigh 6 kg.
Miniature Pinschers are intelligent and quick-witted, but they are very difficult to train due to their high excitability and energy. For the same reasons, they can be difficult to show.
Miniature Pinschers are very popular, and finding and purchasing a puppy is easy. Puppies from breeders cost 20,000-25,000 rubles. A used Miniature Pinscher will cost 2,000-10,000 rubles.

At one point, dogs of a non-existent breed—the "fox pinscher"—were actively sold online. Some people became the happy owners of mixed-breed or mongrel dogs purchased from photos. Others, being vigilant, discovered that such a breed does not exist and never has. Be vigilant when purchasing a small or large friend of your chosen breed.
