Diapers for small breed dogs

Dog diapers are an excellent hygiene aid. They can be used for large, medium, and small breed dogs. Differences will vary in size, design, and materials. To make the right purchase for small breed dogs, follow a few guidelines to help you choose the perfect hygiene accessory for your pet.

When are diapers needed?

Diapers can make life much easier for both humans and dogs if, for whatever reason, the animal can't go outside or in a designated area. They're most often used for small dogs, as their owners rarely take them outside. This is due to the breed's characteristics, as walking in extreme cold or rain can be very uncomfortable for a small dog. Furthermore, it can pose a health risk.

Diapers for small breed dogs

There are numerous situations where diapers are useful for a small four-legged friend. The most common ones are:

  1. A dog doesn't yet know how to go to the bathroom in a specific place. Small dogs may use a special mat or a litter box. This applies not only to puppies but also to adults, as small breeds don't require frequent walks.
  2. Flying or traveling. A diaper will help comfortably endure a long stay in a confined space (like a plane or train), especially since the pet is usually transported in a basket or carrier.
  3. During heat, a female dog cannot control this discharge, so it is recommended to use hygiene products to keep the house clean.
  4. Incontinence. It can occur after surgery and can affect both girls and boys.
  5. Presence of sutures. The diaper will protect wounds and post-operative sutures from unnecessary irritation.
  6. Old age. In this case, the pet may also experience incontinence.
  7. Visiting. If your pet will be indoors for a long time, especially in a unfamiliar room, a diaper will come in very handy.

Although diapers are safe and hygienic, they should not be overused. Your pet must learn to control its urges and become toilet trained. Even the most expensive and high-quality diapers can cause skin irritation and diaper rash.

How to choose a diaper

There's a wide selection of diapers for small dogs available on the pet market. They're readily available at supermarkets, pet stores, or online. They vary in size, color, material, and design. Diapers come with Velcro fasteners, elastic bands, ruffled closures, and more. They come in a variety of colors and patterns. They're made from materials that are hypoallergenic, breathable, and odor-controlling.

To choose a diaper for a small dog, you should follow several guidelines:

  • Decide on a size. Manufacturers may use gradations based on breed, weight, or waist size. Therefore, it's a good idea to measure your pet before purchasing a hygiene product. Sizes are typically designated from XS to XXL, with XS being the smallest. It's suitable for Yorkies, Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, and other breeds. Slightly larger breeds (such as Japanese Chin) should choose size S. Size M is suitable for a Pekingese or miniature poodle.
  • Buy a sample. Visually, diapers may not differ much. However, a particular brand may not suit your dog. Therefore, you can buy several diapers from different manufacturers individually and choose the one that best suits your dog's size and quality.
  • Choose soft, hypoallergenic materials. Small breeds typically have sensitive skin that's prone to frequent irritation. Therefore, it's important to carefully examine the diaper and ensure it doesn't have tight seams or is not made of rough fabric that could irritate your pet's skin.

Belts for male dogs

If the main problem is the markings that male dogs during puberty can leave not only outdoors, but also on corners and furniture at home or when visiting, then an absorbent belt, rather than a closed diaper, may be an excellent solution.

Please note that this hygiene product is not designed for large volumes of discharge, and therefore cannot be used in cases where an alternative to walking is needed.

The convenience of the belt compared to a diaper is undeniable:

  • Owners don't have to worry about how to put a diaper on a dog; the belts are simply wrapped around the animal's body and secured (most often, Velcro is used as a fastener);
  • most of the dog's body is not covered by a diaper, so there are significantly fewer problems with diaper rash;
  • Reusable belts are easy to wash and dry, and they are significantly cheaper to use than disposable diapers.

But belts do have their drawbacks. First and foremost, they don't fit securely enough, which can cause the belt to slip quickly in active animals, ruining the owner's expectations. The solution is suspenders, as in the second photo. The second drawback is their inability to absorb large amounts of moisture. This means that if the dog decides to go beyond just marking and "defecate," leakage is likely unavoidable, with all the undesirable consequences.

Popular diapers

Many pet product manufacturers produce diapers for small dogs. Prices can vary by hundreds of rubles depending on the manufacturer.

The most popular hygiene products among breeders are the following:

Clinics

These domestically produced diapers are made from hydrophilic non-woven fabric. They contain fluff pulp and a superabsorbent polymer. The outer surface is covered with a special polyethylene film that allows air to pass through, but not moisture.

Pampers can be used for both cats and dogs. Sizes for small breeds are marked XS (weight 2-4 kg, waist 15-25 cm) or S (weight 3-6 kg, waist 25-35 cm). The number of pieces per package decreases depending on the size: XS – 11 pieces, S – 10 pieces, etc.

Clinies perform their primary function well: they're waterproof, odor-resistant, and contain waste (including feces) well. They don't stretch, fit securely, and don't slip, and they have a tail opening. To prevent your pet from removing the diaper on their own, it's recommended to wear a jumpsuit or bodysuit over the diaper.

Average price: 385 rubles.

Trixie

Trixie sanitary diapers, made in Germany, are made from high-quality hypoallergenic materials. They provide adequate hygiene for your pet. Trixie diapers are highly absorbent and effectively contain odors.

The diapers are fastened with wide adhesive strips. A soft, elastic waistband ensures a secure fit, ensuring a snug, non-stretching, and non-slip waist. The tail area remains open, allowing it to move freely.

For small breeds, size XS-S is suitable. It is designed for animals with a waist of 20-28 cm. The package contains 12 diapers.

Average price: 570 rubles.

Triol

Made in China, these diapers are made of soft materials that won't cause discomfort to your pet. They are secured with a secure, non-rigid Velcro fastener that won't put pressure on your pet's abdomen. The sides feature elastic ruffles to prevent excess moisture from escaping.

Dog diapers absorb liquid well without leaking. The absorbent layer is medium-sized, allowing it to adequately perform its primary function without interfering with walking. The diaper does not restrict movement, so your pet will feel comfortable. There's a tail opening.

Yorkies, Pomeranians, and Toy Terriers should wear size XS. This size is appropriate for a waist size of 20-28 cm and a weight of 2-4 kg.

Average price: 650 rubles per pack of 22 pieces.

LUXSAN Premium

Another type of domestically produced hygiene product. It's made of fluffed cellulose, which forms the absorbent bottom layer, and a non-woven fabric lining the outer layer. An elastic thread and a soft barrier on the sides prevent moisture from escaping. This design also provides additional support.

The elastic waistband is secured with reusable Velcro. It holds the diaper securely in place and prevents it from slipping.

LUXSAN Premium retains moisture and prevents odor. They are comfortable for your pet and don't restrict movement. They also include a special opening for the tail.

For small dogs weighing 2-4 kg, size XS is suitable.

Average price: 600 rubles per pack of 18 pieces.

How to put on a diaper

Figuring out how to put a diaper on a cat or dog isn't difficult. It all depends on the specific design. Typically, the steps for a basic design are as follows:

  1. Secure the animal in a comfortable position (classic diapers are most conveniently put on when the dog is standing).
  2. Pass the tail through a special hole (it will also tell you where the bottom and top are);
  3. Straighten the diaper on the back.
  4. Secure the bottom part with 2 fasteners.
  5. Check the tightness of the fit (the diaper should not press too hard, but it should not hang loosely either).

Terms of Use

Feedback from veterinarians and owners indicates that diapers for puppies and adult dogs not only provide significant relief to owners in certain situations, but also provide additional responsibility. Using such hygiene products, in addition to purchasing the diapers themselves, requires:

  • timely replacement (you should not allow a cat or dog to remain in a full diaper for a long time, this is fraught with inflammatory processes);
  • regular washing procedure (if this is not done, an unpleasant odor in the room is guaranteed);
  • daily breaks in wearing, as the skin needs to breathe (during this period, the family may have to provide more careful supervision of the pet’s actions);
  • the use of special creams and powders (for many animals, antibacterial therapy with external agents also becomes mandatory due to skin reactions).

Reviews

If you're considering using dog diapers as a solution to your problem, we recommend reading reviews from veterinarians and owners.

Elena, veterinarian, Samara:

Many owners, reading online reviews, believe that dog diapers will solve all problems, including lack of time for walks, but this is not true. Diapers are an excellent solution (usually temporary) for a number of animal conditions (illness, heat, age-related changes). I am against constantly wearing diapers for perfectly healthy dogs, as it is unnatural for the animal. Most problems can be solved through training, as well as sterilization (for dogs of no breeding value).

Andrey, spaniel owner, Moscow:

"Our Martin is a spinal cord injury dog with all the attendant problems. It was very difficult at the beginning of his illness. Many even suggested euthanasia, but we couldn't. Things became much easier when the vet recommended keeping Martin in a special diaper at home. We read reviews, tried three sizes, chose the perfect one, and some of the problems were resolved."

Carolina, Yorkie breeder, St. Petersburg:

"We have three young purebred male dogs (10 months, 18 months, and 4 years old) and three females who are breeding. Diapers are a must, as the competition between the males terrifies us all; they're always ready to mark, especially the younger ones. Reusable diapers are more convenient for male dogs, and we buy disposable ones for the females during heat, as a hygiene product. The main thing is to prevent diaper rash, but otherwise, there are no problems with their use."
