Dog diapers: which are the best?

Hygiene and cleanliness in a home where pets live are often a priority for many families, but using dog diapers can smooth over many difficult situations and prevent stress for both the animal and the owner. To choose the right diapers for your pet and accurately assess which are best and which are less suitable, it's worth exploring this topic in more detail.

When needed

Dogs don't usually need diapers throughout their entire lives, but during those periods when they are needed, it can be really difficult to do without them.

These hygiene products are most needed during the following periods of life:

  • When puppies are getting used to going to the toilet. Until a certain point, the parts of the brain that allow them to recognize the urge to go to the toilet and control the onset of urination are not fully developed. Using diapers during this period relieves the puppy of discomfort and protects the owner's nervous system, as puddles often appear on carpets and furniture at an early age. As the dog matures, it will learn to use the toilet, but until then, the problem can be solved by using a diaper of the appropriate size.
  • Often, in older animals, the epithelium and muscle tissue of the genitourinary system weakens. This can lead to uncontrolled urination, even in dogs that have strictly adhered to sanitary and hygienic rules their entire lives. Just like people, such pets experience deep shame and psychological distress. In this case, the use of diapers will protect both the animal and its household from unnecessary distress.

Lifelong use of diapers may only be necessary in cases of incontinence caused by spinal cord injury that cannot be repaired.

These hygiene products are also useful during long flights or travel, visiting friends, or during heat.

Select size

Dog diaper sizes are selected in two ways. The first is based on breed size. These are designated using Latin letters:

  • XS – the smallest size for puppies of pocket breeds weighing less than 2 kg - dwarf Spitz, Yorkies, toy terriers, etc.;
  • S – for slightly larger breeds – Chinese Crested, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, basenji, etc.;
  • M – diapers for medium-sized dogs – Bichons, miniature poodles, Pekingese, etc.;
  • L – for large representatives of medium breeds – Welsh Corgis, Spaniels, French Bulldogs;
  • XL – diapers for large breeds – husky, collie, schnauzer, etc.;
  • XXL – these hygiene products are designed for the largest representatives – Malamutes, mastiffs, Great Danes, etc.

The second method is more accurate and relies on measuring the dog's abdominal circumference. This measurement, in centimeters, can be compared with the one indicated on the packaging. Some manufacturers use Latin letters and weight, while others use the circumference in centimeters.

How to train

Rarely do dogs remain indifferent when this hygiene product is first applied to them. Most become nervous and try their best to remove it, so here are some general recommendations:

  • Before you begin, you need to pet the animal, calm it down, and talk to it in a gentle voice.
  • While dressing, it's best to have fun and play with your pet; they'll be happy to be distracted. This advice is especially helpful for puppies.
  • You can try to distract him with conversations if the animal likes to listen attentively to the owner’s speech, or start making funny sounds (but it’s important not to scare him).
  • Good results are achieved when you immediately put on your pet's favorite jumpsuit and go for a walk - this reinforces a pleasant association between the hygiene device and pleasant moments.
  • After dressing, you can treat your pet with something that he likes.

Reviews

Tatyana Nikolskaya, veterinarian:

"I always recommend using diapers when potty training puppies. Experts know this reduces stress in the home, and in a calm environment, it's easier for the dog to understand what's expected of it. Many people worry that their pet won't learn if their owners can't express their disapproval every time, but in practice, the opposite is true."

Nikolay Kovalev:

"Our bull terrier suffered a spinal injury seven years ago, which led to bedwetting. We tried for a long time to combat it, but our morale was exhausted because the entire apartment was covered in dirt, the animal was suffering, and so were we. Thanks to the vet who convinced us to try Trixi diapers."

Diana Semenenko:

"We use diapers every time our girl is in heat. It's hard to imagine how we would cope without them, because she's a big dog and can make a mess all over the apartment. It's a shame we didn't know about this method when she was a puppy; it would have saved us a lot of trouble."
