Ovostop for cats

Ovostop is a veterinary drug used for contraception in cats. It is highly effective due to its multi-component composition. Compared to other contraceptive medications for animals, it is easy to administer. The unique formula was developed by the domestic manufacturer Agrovetzashchita.

General description

The medicinal product for conception is produced in two versions:

  • Ovostop for cats;
  • Ovostop-K for cats.

Ovostop for cats

The main difference is in the composition. Each medication formula is tailored to the specific needs of the animal's gender. In both cases, the medication is available as drops for application to the withers. They are packaged in polymer dropper tubes. For cats, the medication is available in 1 ml doses. The package contains two 1 ml dropper tubes.

Important! When purchasing Ovostop, select the medication according to its intended use. The manufacturer also produces a similar contraceptive for dogs, but it is packaged in 2 ml droppers. This amount of medication can cause an overdose and side effects in cats, so be careful.

This medication should only be stored in hermetically sealed dropper bottles. Store in a dry place away from direct ultraviolet rays. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets. To ensure the drops retain their pharmacological properties, store at a temperature between 2 and 25˚C.

How much does it cost and where can I buy it?

The price of a two-pipette package of Ovostop varies from 300 to 360 rubles in different pharmacies and regions. Since the medication is produced by a domestic company, it is available in most veterinary pharmacies. It can also be purchased at a veterinary clinic or pet store. It is also sold online at pet pharmacies. The cost of Ovostop-K is approximately the same, but it is less commonly available in pharmacies.

Composition and pharmacological properties

The composition of the medicine for females includes 3 active components:

  • megestrol acetate;
  • prophet;
  • melatonin.

Ovostop-K, intended for cats, contains cyproterone acetate instead of megestrol acetate.

The components differ in properties, but complement each other’s action:

  1. Megestrol Acetate is a synthetic analogue of progestin, an ovarian hormone. Its main feature is its ability to block the production of hormones that trigger estrus in animals. It also affects the hypothalamus and pituitary gland (important parts of the brain).
  2. Cyproterone Acetate (a synthetic analogue of progesterone) suppresses the production of androgens, which cause sexual arousal in cats. It also affects the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.
  3. Prophetsan It has a calming effect and blocks central and peripheral receptors sensitive to adrenaline. It also lowers blood pressure and normalizes cardiac function.
  4. Melatonin – is a synthetic analogue of the pineal gland hormone. It is involved in many processes in the animal's body, including having a calming effect, normalizing the endocrine system, and restoring the daily cycle.

The drug's components penetrate the bloodstream through the skin and affect the nervous, reproductive, endocrine, and other systems. When used together, they block processes associated with estrus and sexual arousal in animals. The drug begins to act quickly. For example, megestrol acetate reaches its peak blood concentration within 2-4 hours after application to the withers. Because the active ingredients can partially accumulate in fat and other tissues, the drug's effect lasts for a long time. In summer, the drug prevents estrus for 2-3 months, and in winter, its effect lasts for 4-6 months.

Description of the drug Ovostop

Ovostop not only prevents heat or reduces sexual arousal, but also improves behavior in dogs. It eliminates excessive aggression, constant meowing, wandering, and other signs of sexual activity. After using the drops, the animal becomes calm, and peace and quiet reigns in the home.

When and how to apply

According to the instructions, Ovostop drops are used for cats as contraception and to regulate sexual activity. Ovostop-K is used for male cats for the purpose of decreased sexual arousal and behavior correction.

Apply drops to dry, intact skin between the shoulder blades or at the base of the skull to prevent your pet from licking them off. Ovostop and Ovostop-K are used identically. This procedure should be performed in the evening. Apply one 1 ml dropper at a time. The dosage is the same for all pets, regardless of breed, age, or weight.

If the medication does not have an effect within the next day, the drops are reapplied at the same dose after 24 hours. After applying the medication, the animal should not be bathed for 2 days.

How to apply drops to a cat's withers

Please note: Do not apply this product to damaged skin.

Before using this medication, consult a doctor, as it has a number of contraindications and can cause serious side effects if used incorrectly. If you do not wish to have offspring from your cat, it is advisable to spay or neuter the animal. Any medication containing hormones has a negative impact on health to some degree.

Contraindications and side effects

The following diseases are contraindications for the use of contraceptives:

This medication should not be used if you have an intolerance to any of its components, including allergic reactions. If you have hypersensitivity or a tendency toward allergies, use the medication with caution and only after consulting a doctor.

Please note! Due to its hormonal components, Ovostop is not used in cats that have not reached sexual maturity, or in pregnant or lactating females. Ovostop-K should not be used in females.

Pets tolerate contraceptive drops well when used according to the recommended dosage. If the pet is intolerant to any of the ingredients, itching, hives, or other allergic reactions may occur. In this case, the medication should not be used further. If necessary, an alternative contraceptive method is selected. Depending on the severity of the allergy, the pet is given an antiallergic medication.

  • It's packaged in single doses. The dosage doesn't depend on the pet's weight.
  • It works effectively. Results are usually noticeable the next day.
  • Long-lasting effect. The effect lasts for a long period – from 2 to 6 months.
  • Complex action. It influences hormonal balance, inhibits processes associated with estrus, and modifies behavior due to its calming properties.

Owner reviews

Marina, owner of a Thai cat:

"I used Ovostop-K on my cat last fall. It's an excellent product. I applied one drop to his withers in the evening, and the next morning he was a gentle and obedient cat. As spring approached, I went to the pharmacy again to get more medication."

Galina, owner of a Persian cat:

"We periodically breed our female cat with a male cat to ensure she has offspring, but sometimes we give her a rest. We've tried various medications for this purpose, mostly herbal ones. Most of them didn't produce the desired results. Ovostop is a completely different matter. It's effective and easy to use. The main thing is that you don't have to torture Marquise to administer the medication."

Veterinarian Reviews

Gennady, a veterinarian with 10 years of experience:

"It's an effective contraceptive, but I don't recommend using it on animals. The hormones it contains can cause serious health problems that can only be treated surgically. If you don't want kittens and want a peaceful home, have your pet spayed or neutered."

Lyudmila, a veterinarian with 6 years of experience:

"It's a truly effective remedy, but it should only be used in exceptional cases. To stop or prevent heat, if surgery is not possible for some reason, I usually prescribe herbal sedatives. There's a huge selection on the market these days. Be very careful with hormones!"
