Otibiovin - ear drops for cats

General description

Otibiovin cat drops are a clear, colorless solution intended for auricular (intra-ear) use. It is available in two packaging options:

  • plastic bottles with a capacity of 15, 20 or 25 ml with a dropper that allows you to measure the exact dosage and drip the solution directly into the ear canal;
  • glass bottles with a capacity of 5 or 10 ml, which are sealed with a rubber stopper and an aluminum cap on top of it.

An opened bottle of drops should be used within 12 days, which corresponds to the maximum duration of treatment with the medication. Used bottles are not recommended for reuse for household purposes. Unopened containers have a shelf life of 36 months. Store in a dry, dark place at a temperature of 15-20°C, away from food and cat food.

Operating principle

Otibiovin's comprehensive antimicrobial action is achieved through the synergy of its active ingredients, which, when applied topically, are not absorbed through the skin and provide a local effect. The aminoglycoside antibiotic (gentamicin sulfate) in the ear drops provides bactericidal action against most gram-negative and some gram-positive microorganisms (streptococci, pneumococci, salmonella, klebsiella, etc.), which cause bacterial and fungal ear infections. Additional benefits of the drops include:

  • Salicylic acid - has a calming and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin tissue, helps soften the stratum corneum and exfoliate the epithelium.
  • Triamcinolone acetone - reduces inflammation and exudation in affected areas, has an antipruritic effect, which reduces the urge for cats to scratch and ensures a calmer state
  • carbentopendicin bromide – complements the antiseptic and bactericidal properties of other components against bacteria and some fungi, inhibiting their development.

In addition, the drops contain additional components: distilled water and ethyl alcohol.

Indications for use

Otibiovin is recommended for use only as directed by a veterinarian. The drops are prescribed for the treatment of the following ear conditions in cats:

  • otitis, caused by the activity of fungi or bacteria;
  • dermatitis affecting the upper layers of the epidermis;
  • eczema of the auricle and ear canal;

Before use, it is recommended to identify the causative agent of the ear inflammation and test it for sensitivity to the antifungal and antimicrobial active components in the drops.

Important! The active ingredients of Otibiovin will not be effective against ear infections that are secondary symptoms of other conditions.

Directions for use

For use in cats, Otibiovin is administered 4-5 drops into the affected ear. The frequency of ear drop administration is as follows:

  • 3-4 times a day – at the beginning of the course;
  • 2-3 times a day – after 3 days.

The treatment course lasts 5-7 days, but should not exceed 12 days. Stop using the medication when symptoms are no longer present for 3 days. For example, if a 7-day course is prescribed, but all unpleasant symptoms disappear after 2 days, it is not recommended to use Otibiovin for more than 5 days.

Important! Do not administer drops for more than 12 days, even if your cat's symptoms persist! Such treatment situations require additional consultation with a veterinarian.

The procedure for using Otibiovin is as follows:

  1. Prepare the auricle and ear canal: remove all contaminants (crusts, scabs, wax, exudate) from the affected areas.
  2. Place the required dose of the drug into the ear.
  3. Gently massage the base of the ear to improve penetration of the solution into the tissue.
  4. Hold the cat's head for a while to prevent the drops from splashing if the cat shakes its head.

The use of Otibiovin is possible in combination with other medications as part of symptomatic and specific therapy, except for those intended for auricular use.

Note! Otibiovin may be prescribed for the treatment of complex ear infections after clinical and diagnostic examinations, identification of the pathogen, and its sensitivity to the active ingredients.

Contraindications

The instructions list a perforation (rupture) of the eardrum or hypersensitivity to the active ingredients of the ear drops in some animals as contraindications for the use of Otibiovin. In the latter case, the medication should be replaced with a similar one containing different active ingredients.

When using the drug according to the instructions for use, complications and side effects have not yet been identified.

Price

Otibiovin can be purchased at veterinary pharmacies or online. Most retailers offer the ear drops in 20 ml dropper bottles. The price for this size ranges from 360 to 460 rubles.

Owner reviews

Valeria, owner of the cat Lord:

"Our cat's ear mite infestation had become chronic. He was suffering from ear pain, and earwax had started to form. All day long, he spent sleeping and eating a little, completely ignoring his favorite toys. Within 3-4 days of using Otibiovin, as prescribed by the veterinarian, there was a visible improvement, and he became noticeably more alert. After 7 days, everything had returned to normal, and his ears no longer bothered him. The short shelf life of an opened bottle was unfortunate, as most of the medication had to be thrown away."

Nikolay, the owner of the Abyssinian:

"Our cat was suffering from severe itching in her ears, which she scratched until they became sore. After consulting with a veterinarian and undergoing tests, a fungus was discovered. The vet immediately prescribed Otibiovin. We purchased it at a nearby veterinary pharmacy and used it strictly according to the instructions to avoid harming our pet. The treatment itself wasn't easy, though: whenever she saw a vial, she'd try to hide, so we had to catch her and bring in helpers. After a five-day course, we had the tests repeated: the results were excellent, and she no longer scratches her ears."

Veterinarian Reviews

Leonid, a veterinarian with 15 years of experience:

"Otibiovin is a proven medication from a Czech manufacturer that effectively treats ear infections caused by fungi or bacteria. Treatment usually lasts a few days, and in most cases, the problem does not recur. However, before prescribing, I always perform an otoscopy to ensure the eardrum is intact. Using the drops if the eardrum is ruptured is strictly prohibited."

Evgeniya, a veterinarian with 8 years of experience:

"The drops are effective even for chronic ear infections. The key is to correctly identify the pathogen and test it for sensitivity to gentamicin sulfate (an antibiotic found in the drops). I recommend warming the bottle in your hands before administering the drops to reduce discomfort for the animal. I've had a couple of cases of individual intolerance to the drug's components, so I had to select alternatives."
