Review of the 2016 Crufts International Dog Show

Every March, London hosts the world's largest dog show, Crufts. It attracts dogs from all over the world. Winning at Crufts is prestigious for both breeders and their pets. This article provides a detailed photo report from the 2016 Crufts show.

Historical background

The exhibition was founded by Charles Cruft. The first show featured only terriers. From 1891 onward, all known dog breeds were admitted. The event became known as the Crufts Dog Show. The number of participants steadily grew: 600 in 1886; over 2,000 in 1891. In the anniversary year of 1936, the fair's organizing committee received 10,000 entries. In 1948, Charles Cruft died. The Kennel Club became the event's organizer. It moved to the beautifully named Olympia Exhibition Center in London. In 1879, due to the growing number of competitors, it was moved to Earls Court. Since 1991, the show has been held at the Birmingham National Exhibition Center and lasts four days.

2009 was marked by scandal. The BBC ended its partnership with the show. The reason was the channel's documentary about violations in the breeding of purebred dogs. In 2012, the show's rules were tightened. The best representatives of a breed must undergo veterinary inspection to ensure that individuals with physical abnormalities do not make it to the finals. Champions of six breeds failed the test and lost their titles. Among them are the English bulldog, Pekingese, Clumber Spaniel, Neapolitan Mastiff, basset hound.

In 2015, the “Best Dog of the Show” award went to a Scottish Terrier from Russia, MCVANS TO RUSSIA WITH LOVE (Knopa).
