The "Microchipping Month" campaign is being held in the UK
Cat Protection is encouraging pet owners to get their pets microchipped during the national "Microchipping Month" campaign (throughout June). Shocking research has revealed that nearly half of cats in the UK are not microchipped.
A survey conducted jointly with the Food Industry Association found that of the 7.4 million cats in the UK, only 4.1 million are microchipped. The survey also revealed that Scottish cat owners are the least likely to microchip their cats (only 32 percent), while those in the South East are much more likely to do so (around 69 percent).
The government has announced that all dogs in England must be microchipped by 2016, and Cats Protection believes the same should apply to cats.
"This National Microchipping Month, we're encouraging people to secure their pets," said Karen Thompson, deputy manager at the National Animal Reception Center. "The procedure is simple and painless, yet it makes a huge difference in ensuring the continued well-being of a pet. The cost is minimal, but the owner is so happy and fulfilled when their beloved pet is found thanks to a microchip. The joy of finding one is priceless." Last year, Cats Rescue reunited countless owners with their lost kitties—all thanks to microchips.
You can also microchip your pet at a veterinary clinic. Call ahead and ask if they offer microchipping services. This will save you time and stress if your pet gets lost.
