Milprazon for dogs

Milprazon is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used to treat and prevent helminthic infestations in dogs. It is produced by the renowned Slovenian company KRKA. Although it has only recently entered the Russian market, it has already gained popularity among dog owners.

Composition and release form

It is produced as tablets for oral use. The drug is available in two versions:

  • oval tablets are intended for puppies and small breeds (up to 5 kg);
  • Round tablets are used for medium and large pets (over 5 kg).

The main difference lies in the concentration of active ingredients. The tablets are white-yellow in color, with brown specks as a distinguishing feature. A dividing strip significantly simplifies dividing the tablets to measure out the required dose. They are packaged in blisters of 2 or 4.

The active components of the medication ensure the destruction of round and flatworms, as well as their larvae and eggs:

  • praziquantel;
  • milbemycin oxime.

Also included:

  • povidone;
  • colloidal silicon;
  • microcrystalline cellulose;
  • dry yeast;
  • lactose monohydrate, etc.

One of the ingredients is meat flavoring, which gives the medication a pleasant smell and taste. This makes it easy for many pets to consume it on their own.

Principle of action and indications for use

The drug's main advantage is its broad spectrum of action. This is due to the fact that its two active ingredients complement each other:

  1. Praziquantel increases the permeability of cell membranes and interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses. Its action results in paralysis. Due to the disruption of important physiological processes, the parasites die within a short period of time.
  2. Milbemycin oxime acts on parasite larvae and eggs, preventing their further development and resulting in death.

The medication is effective against worms at all stages of development. The concentration of active ingredients reaches its maximum value in just 1-4 hours. The parasites leave the animal's body naturally. The active ingredients are eliminated from the body within 24 hours.

According to the instructions for use, Milprazon is prescribed for dogs in the following cases:

  • for cestodiasis;
  • with nematodes;
  • in mixed invasions.

The drug is also used to prevent infestations with roundworms and flatworms that parasitize animals. Preventive deworming is performed:

  • quarterly;
  • before mating;
  • before vaccination.

Milprazon is given to dogs to prevent dirofilariasis during the period of activity of blood-sucking insects.

Instructions for use

Regardless of whether the medication is used for treatment or prevention, the dosage is calculated based on the animal's weight. It is also important to pay attention to the concentration of active ingredients and the intended purpose of the medication.

The pug is weighed

If your pet weighs between 0.5 and 10 kg, buy tablets for puppies and small breeds. The following amounts should be given:

  1. For animals weighing from 500 g to 1 kg, you will need only half.
  2. For pets weighing between 1 and 5 kg, one tablet is needed.
  3. For dogs weighing from 5 to 10 kg, 2 pieces will be required.

For medium and large breeds, it is necessary to use a preparation with a higher concentration, observing the recommended doses:

  • for dogs from 5 to 10 kg – 1 piece;
  • for pets from 10 to 25 kg – 1 piece;
  • for animals from 25 to 50 kg – 2 pcs.;
  • for dogs from 50 to 75 kg – 3 pcs.

For treatment, the anthelmintic is given to your pet once. Sometimes, for severe worm infestations, the procedure is repeated up to four times. In this case, the interval between doses should be one week. Consulting a veterinarian is essential, as excessive use can cause serious health problems.

Apathy in a dog

For prophylaxis, Milprazon is administered quarterly. If the medication is used to prevent heartworm disease, it should be administered monthly during the entire period of mosquito activity, which transmits the disease. Typically, the medication should be used from April to October. Before administration, a blood test should be performed to ensure the absence of microfilariae.

If you don’t know how to give Milprazon to your dog, use one of the suggested options:

  1. Offer your dog the tablets. Due to the pleasant meaty aroma, some pets will eat them without any additives.
  2. If your pet is reluctant to take the medication directly, mix it with a small amount of food. For puppies or small dogs, the tablets can be crushed beforehand.
  3. You can force-feed the medication by placing the tablets on the back of the tongue. A special device can simplify this complex procedure. It can be purchased at any veterinary pharmacy.

It's best and proper to administer the medication during the morning feeding. No special preparation is required. No enemas, gastric lavage, or dietary changes are required.

Price

The cost of a 2-tablet package of Milprazon for dogs depends on the concentration of the active ingredients:

  • for puppies – 250-270 rubles;
  • for large pets – 430-460 rubles.

Contraindications and side effects

Milprazon is considered a low-toxicity medication, but there are times when it should not be used. Avoid using it if:

Owner reviews

Georgy, the husky's owner:

"Our dog is kept in a pen. She's very active, so we take her for a lot of walks in the nearby forest. There's a very high risk of worm infestation. On the advice of the breeders, we're using Milprazon. Our beauty eats it from our hands and has no side effects. The medication works perfectly. We've already had her tested several times."

Regina, owner of a golden retriever:

"We have two small children who are constantly in close contact with the dog. They not only pet him and cuddle him, but also kiss him. It's very important to deworm the dog regularly. We use the tried-and-true Milprazon, which has never failed us in two years."

Lyudmila, owner of two Yorkshire terriers:

"Before heading to the dacha, the issue of heartworm prevention became pressing. Most medications can be given from two months of age, and our babies were only a month old. The vet recommended Milprazon. The anthelmintic worked perfectly. I think its main advantage is that it's suitable for small breeds and can be given from two weeks of age."

Veterinarian Reviews

Mikhail, a veterinarian with 12 years of experience:

"Milprazon is a cheaper alternative to Milbamex. The manufacturer claims the drug is safe, but I've encountered numerous negative reviews from colleagues and dog owners. I personally recommend Caniquantel to my clients more often." Cestal or Drontal".

Victoria, a veterinarian with 5 years of experience:

"Milprazon is an affordable and effective anthelmintic. I sometimes recommend it to my clients. I've never encountered any side effects. My animals often take the pills themselves and tolerate the medication well."

Antonina, a veterinarian with 9 years of experience:

"Milprazon is considered a safe medication, but in my practice, I prefer proven anthelmintics. I know full well that such medications can cause serious health problems."
