Indications for use

Deworming – is an important component of pet health care. Helminth eggs can enter an animal's body in various ways:

  • from the mother during the intrauterine stage of development;
  • through direct contact with a sick animal;
  • from fish that has not been heat treated;
  • when sniffing feces left by other cats on the territory;
  • through contact with contaminated shoes and other objects brought into the house;
  • when bitten by a mosquito that carries dangerous parasites (as in the case of dirofilariasis).

The biggest misconception owners have is that a cat that never leaves the apartment and eats special food can't become infected with parasites. Every day, we bring huge amounts of dust into the house on our shoes, which is highly likely to contain tiny, invisible helminth eggs. It only takes a pet sniffing your shoes or walking on a contaminated floor for parasites to enter its system.

Can a domestic cat get worms?

If a kitten develops worms, it will develop poorly and gain weight slowly. Some types of parasites can be life-threatening and can be transmitted from pets to owners, so veterinarians recommend deworming all domestic cats, starting at 6 weeks of age.

The drug Milbemax is effective against:

  • roundworms;
  • tapeworms;
  • heartworms (dirofilaria), including at the larval stage.

Milbemax tablet is recommended for use in the treatment of various types of helminthiasis, as well as for the prevention of their development.

Compound

The drug Milbemax contains two active ingredients:

  • Milbemycin oxime is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug active against ticks and helminths.
  • Praziquantel is an anthelmintic drug effective against tapeworms and flukes.

The maximum concentration of drugs in the animal’s blood is achieved 2 hours after taking the tablet.

Milbemax (Milbemax) composition, active ingredient

The active ingredients in Milbemax act on the nervous system of helminths, completely paralyzing them and preventing them from attaching, and also cause the destruction of the worm's protective shell, which leads to its death and subsequent easy elimination from the animal's body.

Instructions for use (dosage)

Important! Preventive deworming of animals is performed quarterly (once every 3 months) or unscheduled, a few days before vaccination or an upcoming mating. Dosage and frequency recommendations for treating helminthiasis depend on the type of parasite identified.

If your kitten requires preventative or treatment, it's important to remember that Milbemax tablets can be used on kittens weighing at least 500 grams and aged at least 6 weeks. If you need a dewormer for very young kittens, we recommend purchasing a special suspension.

For preventive purposes, a single dose of Milbemax Elanco is recommended, calculated based on the animal's weight.

How to give Milbemax to a cat

The tablet is given with the morning meal (regular dry or wet food, as well as natural feeding, are acceptable). No special fasting is required before or after administration. There are also no other dietary or care restrictions for the pet during treatment. The dead worms are completely digested in the intestines, so only traces of mucus may be seen in the stool after administration.

Side effects

Almost all anthelmintic medications can cause lethargy and drowsiness in animals. If a cat's activity level is reduced on the day of taking the pill, and they sleep a lot, but otherwise feel fine, this is normal and resolves fairly quickly without any intervention.

In rare cases, a reaction to the drug may be more severe and include symptoms such as ataxia, muscle tremors, vomiting, and diarrhea. If these symptoms occur, consult a veterinarian and do not administer the next dose (if more than one dose was prescribed). These symptoms usually resolve spontaneously after a single dose. Treatment is symptomatic.

Severe individual allergic reactions requiring emergency care are extremely rare.

Contraindications

The drug is contraindicated:

  • if the kitten has not reached 6 weeks of age;
  • during the active period of a viral or bacterial infection;
  • an animal that is very weakened after an illness.

Do not exceed the recommended dose in the table, and remember that after opening the blister, the tablet can be stored for no more than 6 months.

Price

Milbemax is available at veterinary pharmacies in any city, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Ryazan. The advantage of purchasing it at a pharmacy is that you can buy just one tablet (for example, if your weight requires half the recommended dose).

If you can't visit a specialized pharmacy, you can order the drug from Yandex Market, where its price ranges from 475 to 800 rubles per package (2 tablets).

Reviews

Yana, the owner of a Maine Coon:

"We use Milbemax all the time. We like the affordable price and lack of side effects. One tablet is just enough for our 8 kg Marty. He's been eating for four years, no complaints. He doesn't want to eat on his own, but he easily takes a pill with something tasty."

Valery, veterinarian, 10 years of experience:

"Among many similar medications, Milbemax stands out for its excellent price-effectiveness ratio. It has proven effective in treating a wide range of helminth infections, plus it has a simple formula and convenient dosage. In the vast majority of cases, animals tolerate it well, so I recommend it to my patients."
