International Animal Day

International Animal Day is a special occasion designed to remind people of the fragility of the natural world and the human responsibility for preserving all life on the planet. The main goal of this day is to draw public attention to the issues of protecting wildlife and domestic animals, as well as to support the idea of humane and caring treatment for them. Events marking this day are held with the participation and support of various environmental and animal rights organizations, including major international foundations.

Date of the holiday

World Animal Day is more of an important public initiative than a traditional holiday with celebrations. This date is symbolic and has a permanent place in the calendar: every year, International Animal Day is celebrated on October 4th, without change or postponement.

International Animal Day

International Animal Day is celebrated:

  • in 2018 – Thursday, October 4
  • in 2019 – on Friday, October 4.

The holiday was established in Russia in 2000 at the initiative of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and with the full support of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Each year, WWF Russia dedicates October 4th to a specific endangered and rare species of fauna, whose conservation the fund works to preserve.

A bit of history

World Animal Day was established in 1931. In 1930, the International Congress of Conservationists was held in Florence, Italy. One of the most important decisions made at the animal rights congress was the establishment of a new holiday – World Animal Day.

The primary goal of the event was to highlight rare and endangered species of the Earth's fauna. However, the date of the new event presented some difficulties. What date should the holiday be celebrated on? Dozens of proposals were put forward. However, after much debate and consultation, zooecologists settled on October 4th—the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of all living creatures—from domestic dogs and cats to wild tigers and lions.

World Animal Day

Francis of Assisi is a Catholic saint, a real historical figure who lived at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries and the founder of the Franciscan Order. The order's core principles were poverty, chastity, and obedience; adherence to all its commandments was intended to lead to grace and the elevation of the spirit over carnal feelings. Francis of Assisi embodied compassion and mercy, not only toward people but toward all living beings. It is no coincidence that the saint became the patron saint of animals—his tender, reverent attitude toward the world extended to all nature, animate and inanimate. According to legend, Francis could understand the language of birds and animals; during his travels around the world, he was unmolested by predators and unbitten by snakes and insects. His feast day, October 4, has been chosen as the date for a new holiday—World Animal Day.

World Animal Day

Today, World Animal Day is celebrated in virtually every country—perhaps the holiday's most distinctive feature is its lack of political boundaries. One of the organizations that is, without exaggeration, the main driving force behind World Animal Day is the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

World Wildlife Fund

WWF is a large-scale, widespread public organization dedicated to the study, conservation, and restoration of natural diversity worldwide. WWF began working in Russia in 1988, and today, the Foundation's mission in our country is to conserve rare animal species: the Amur tiger, polar bear, walrus, leopard, bison, and snow leopard—a total of 14 wild species.

The World Wildlife Fund was founded in 1947. Initially, the organization was called the Nature Conservation Fund, and its mission was to raise and distribute funds for various environmental and conservation activities. In 1961, the organization underwent significant changes and was reorganized into the current World Wildlife Fund. During the first years after the reorganization, it continued to finance conservation campaigns, but after several years, it developed into a global network and began independently organizing and implementing various projects to preserve and restore wildlife.

World Wildlife Fund

For October 4th – World Animal Day – WWF traditionally prepares a series of special events designed to draw the attention of both regional and federal authorities and ordinary citizens to the problems of the animal kingdom. However, the Foundation has chosen to focus on a specific issue – for example, in 2017, World Animal Day was dedicated to the saiga antelope. The only remaining steppe ungulate species in our country is in danger of extinction, and therefore WWF calls on everyone to take urgent and immediate measures to preserve and restore the saiga population.

Animal Day Traditions

International Animal Day is celebrated with numerous public and educational initiatives, the main goal of which is to remind people of the need to care for our smaller brothers and preserve nature. On this day, various events are held around the world and in Russia aimed at promoting responsible and humane attitudes toward animals.

The most common formats include information and educational campaigns, charity fairs, themed exhibitions, and open days at shelters and animal rights organizations. Flash mobs, master classes, and interactive activities for children and adults are often held, as well as drives to rehome stray cats and dogs. Special attention is paid to collecting donations for shelter maintenance and animal welfare, as well as environmental initiatives such as cleanups and the protection of natural wildlife habitats.

This date takes on its own unique forms in different regions. For example, in 2024, the All-Russian social campaign "Everyone Needs a Friend!" was held, during which participants created posters, wall newspapers, crafts, and presentations dedicated to caring for animals. Every year on October 4, Krasnoyarsk Stolby National Park organizes the regional children's art competition "Sunny Bunny." And at Pleshcheyevo Lake National Park near Yaroslavl, educational programs, photo and children's art exhibitions, as well as environmental games and quizzes aimed at instilling a caring attitude toward nature in the younger generation are traditionally held on this day.
