What is a chondroprotector?

The name of this group of drugs translates as "cartilage protectors." Chondroprotectors slow the destruction of cartilage tissue and stimulate its regeneration, relieve inflammation, and restore cartilage elasticity and joint mobility.

The main active ingredients of chondroprotectors are glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate. Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), chondroitin and glucosamine, are components of cartilage tissue. A deficiency of these substances causes cartilage to lose flexibility and elasticity, reducing its resistance to stress and its ability to regenerate. Despite their synthetic origin, these substances integrate well into damaged areas. Many chondroprotective medications also contain hyaluronic acid. It is an important component of synovium, the nutrient fluid that fills the joint cavity and provides lubrication.

The following are used as additional components of chondroprotectors:

  • Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are substances necessary for maintaining the shock-absorbing properties of cartilage.
  • Microelements help reduce inflammation and restore tissue metabolism.
  • Vitamins for dogs- ensures bone strength and stimulates the synthesis of endogenous (own) collagen.
  • Extracts and oils of medicinal plants. Extracts and powders of chamomile, nettle, juniper, oak bark, calendula, St. John's wort, and wild rosemary have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative effects.

Indications, contraindications

For dogs, chondroprotectors are used in complex therapy for the following diseases:

They are also used during the rehabilitation period after a fracture, surgery or serious illness.

Expert recommendations. For preventative purposes, chondroprotectors are recommended for dogs over 8 years old, and for large breeds at any age. Older animals produce insufficient glycosaminoglycans, and in large dogs, their production rate lags behind the rapid growth of bone and cartilage tissue.

There are no specific contraindications for medications in this category. In rare cases, dogs may develop an allergic reaction due to individual intolerance, which resolves spontaneously after discontinuing the medication. Veterinarians recommend using caution when administering dietary supplements containing GSH to dogs with kidney problems, as well as to pregnant and lactating female dogs.

Reviews

Svetlana Romanovna Kupchenko, veterinarian:

"Joint diseases are a real scourge for large-breed dogs; they can render a large and strong animal incapacitated. Insufficient exercise and poor nutrition are often to blame. Chondroprotectors for dogs can correct glycosaminoglycan deficiency in cartilage tissue and restore joint function. GAG-containing products should be included in the diet of large-breed puppies until they are one year old, and for older dogs, we recommend chondroprotectors for ongoing use."

Ivan Ivanovich Lisyansky, veterinarian

"I've worked at a veterinary hospital for over 10 years, and it's been helpful to work in the emergency department, where owners of injured dogs often come in. After providing first aid, I often use Chondartron to shorten the recovery period. Injections of this drug significantly accelerate the recovery of damaged joints."

Vladimir Nechitailo, Moscow

"Our beloved Chihuahua, Tom, is already 12 years old—practically a geriatric. He has difficulty jumping onto a bed or a chair, and he's started limping when he walks. The vet recommended buying Arthroglycan, a Russian chondroprotector, and giving him tablets regularly. To ensure the dog can swallow the medication, the tablets have to be ground into powder. After a month of Arthroglycan, Tom has noticeably "rejuvenated"—he's become more active, jumps up onto the bed on his own, and his limping has disappeared."

Larisa Novikova, Samara

"Six months ago, we bought a brown Labrador puppy. We live in a country house, so the dog has plenty of room to run around. He's a wonderful companion—playful, obedient, and smart. We have regular veterinary checkups, keep up with all his vaccinations, and feed him properly. He's developing well, and there haven't been any health issues. However, at his last checkup, the doctor found slight signs of rickets in Archie. So, he was prescribed Hondartron. The medication hasn't had any side effects, and Archie eats the pills without complaint. The doctor says he needs to take them for a long time, but after a month, he's already seeing results."
