Red pandas
Red panda (lesser) – an unusual and cute animal that lives in the Himalayan Mountains.
It has a calm nature and thrives in captivity. Thanks to its unique, vibrant coloring, interesting behavior, and lifestyle, pandas have attracted the interest of many animal lovers and ordinary people.
Not everyone knows about the existence of the red panda, although many people see this animal on their monitors almost every day. This animal is depicted on the logo of the famous Firefox browser from Mozilla.Yes, it is the red panda, and not me, the fox, as many people think.
Where did the name come from?
The first written records of this mammal species were found in China as early as the 13th century. However, the red panda was first discovered in Europe only in the 19th century. General Thomas Hardwick is officially considered the "discoverer," having suggested calling these animals by the letter combination "wa," the sound a panda typically makes.
The main name "Ailurus fulgens", which means shining cat, was given by Professor Frederic Cuvier, who brazenly took advantage of the fact that Thomas was taking a long time to return to his homeland.

Description
The red panda is relatively small in size, about the same size as a large domestic cat.
The red panda's body length ranges from 50 to 65 cm. Its elongated body is covered in thick, fluffy fur. This increased fur makes the animal's body appear larger than it actually is. Its head is large in proportion to the rest of its body. Its paws are small and curved. Its feet are heavily haired, which helps it move across snow and ice. When walking, its paws do not fully touch the ground. Its small toes have curved claws that can be retracted and extended. It also has a unique accessory toe, which allows the panda to grasp various objects (such as bamboo branches and leaves) with its forepaws.
It's precisely because of its unusual coloring that many experts call this animal the red panda. The fur is a bright red on top, with dark or brown shades appearing towards the underside. The panda's face has the most striking coloring. The ears, nose, cheeks, and eyebrows are white, contrasting very unusually with the red hue, and the pattern varies from individual to individual.
Thanks to this coloring, the animal can safely hide from predators among moss and lichen.
Lifestyle
During the day, pandas mostly sleep in tree hollows, but are active in the evening and at night. They mostly move through the trees. They feel uncomfortable on the ground and move very slowly, although they do eat on the ground. Pandas feed on bamboo leaves and shoots, but their diet also includes berries, mushrooms, and even small rodents. Although these animals are considered carnivores, animal food makes up a minimal portion of their diet.

Method of reproduction
The main breeding season is January. Development of the fetus takes approximately 50 days, although the period from mating to birth can range from 90 to 150 days. This difference is called diapause, as conception occurs significantly later than mating.
Birth and maturation occur in a pre-woven nest. After birth, the infants are blind and deaf for a period of time. Maturation occurs slowly, with the average age of sexual maturity being around 1.5 years.
Endangered
The red panda is listed as "Endangered" on the IUCN Red List. The total population of this species is approximately 2,500.
Although the red pandas' habitat is large and their enemies are few, the main threats to their survival are intensive deforestation and poaching.
Fortunately, these animals reproduce easily in captivity. The number of animals born in zoos has already reached 350. However, they give birth no more than once a year, and the mortality rate in the wild is high. Unfortunately, this species is currently still endangered.
