A nine-week-old kitten had his paw amputated, but he continues to enjoy life.
A nine-week-old kitten was found abandoned. But despite all the hardships, he's now back on his feet, even after his leg was amputated. The tiny kitten was found by roadside workers in Merthyr, and at first glance, they thought he was dead.
RSPCA Inspector Gemma Cooper said: "The workers who found him initially thought he was dead. He was extremely weak, emaciated, and barely breathing. Furthermore, vets later discovered neurological damage to his left front paw; he was unable to use it or even feel it.
We don't know what happened to him or how he sustained this injury; it could have been the result of a variety of causes. The workers took the kitten—now named Sam—and brought him to a veterinary surgeon, where he was examined."
Inspector Cooper said: "The vet thought there was still a small chance his leg would recover, so I took him home and cared for him for three weeks.
Over those three weeks, he grew into a wonderful, happy, inquisitive little kitten who wanted to spend every free moment with me. He never left my side. Unfortunately, there was no improvement in the condition or sensitivity of his injured paw, and Sam had to have it amputated on the recommendation of veterinarians, as the injured paw would only cause him problems in the future.
After the surgery, he recovered quite quickly, which proves that he is more than capable of moving around on just three legs and enjoying his life despite such a physical defect.
"He's doing really well on three legs," Inspector Cooper added. "He actually moves a lot faster than all my other four-legged cats that live in the house!"
The kitten will be sent to the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSCP) to find a new owner and home. Llis Nini of the animal protection center is confident that a home will be found for the little one within the next couple of weeks.
