Canagan dog food
Every dog breeder, without exception, wants their pet to be healthy and active throughout its life. And one of the most important factors for this is a complete and healthy diet. Today, we'd like to introduce you to a relatively new product: Kanagan dog food.
Despite its rare availability and relatively high price, this food is slowly but surely gaining a following among grateful dog owners. There are several reasons for this: firstly, the manufacturer claims the food is completely grain-free; secondly, it boasts a high content of high-quality meat; and thirdly, it contains natural antioxidants and vitamins.

Let's work together to find out if the company is being dishonest about its food and find out what these diets actually consist of.

Kanagan food manufacturer
Many of us have never heard of this name, and this is not surprising – the first food of this brand was launched into mass production only in August 2012, and deliveries to Russia began even later.
The creator and mastermind behind this food is British-born Eddie Milbourne, founder of Symply Pet Foods. You may already be familiar with Symply—it was Eddie's first venture, and after its success, he decided to make pet food even better and more nutritious.
Canagan dog food is produced exclusively in the UK, using only the freshest, highest-quality ingredients—the company's credo. The manufacturer also emphasizes that all its foods are biologically appropriate for dogs' needs. This means the nutritional composition is as close as possible to what dogs have eaten in the wild for thousands of years.
Another fact Eddie insists on is that each meat in the food has its own name. This means you won't find "meat" or "meat ingredients" listed on the package. Each meat ingredient is clearly described and sourced—fresh beef, free-range chicken, fresh lamb, and so on. It's also stated that the food is GMO-free and free of growth hormones—a very important distinction.
In our opinion, all of this is credible, but whether the stated facts correspond to reality will be revealed after analyzing the composition.
Kanagan dog food range
Since this is a small production facility focused primarily on quality, a wide product range wasn't a priority for the company. Currently, customers have access to eight dry food products, as well as 12 canned foods and three types of treats.

Dry food is produced in the following types:
- Canagan dry food for dogs prone to excess weight (also for seniors) – Light/Senior;
- Diet for large breeds – Large Breed;
- For small breeds – Free Run Chicken (with free-range chicken);
- Country Game for small breeds – food with duck, venison and rabbit meat;
- Also Country Game food for all dog breeds (with the same base);
- Free Chicken Run for all breeds;
- Diet for all breeds based on Scottish salmon - Scottish Salmon;
- Grass Fed Lamb is a food for all dog breeds with the addition of free-range lamb.
All dry food is available in three packaging options: 2, 6, and 12 kg bags. The exceptions are small breed food, which does not come in 12 kg packaging but does have a 0.5 kg bag, and large breed food, which is only available in 2 and 12 kg bags.
There are a few more canned foods available. Here's a list of all the flavors available in stores:
- Free Run Chicken with chicken meat;
- Country Game with deer, goose and domestic duck meat;
- British Beef with a beef base;
- British Lamb with lamb;
- Chicken HotPot – chicken meat with fruits and vegetables;

All of these Canagan dog foods are available in just one package – a 400 gram tin.
The company also produces three types of treats: chicken, salmon, duck, and chickpea. These delicacies are designed to reward dogs during training and active play that requires a reward.

Let's now take a look at the ingredients of Kanagan dog food and understand what it actually consists of. For our analysis, we selected the Free Run Chicken all-breed dog food with chicken.
Analysis of feed composition
According to information obtained from the official website, this food contains the following components:
- Fresh boneless chicken meat (26%);
- Dried chicken (25%);
- Sweet potato;
- Peas;
- Potato.
The first five components provide a rough idea of the composition—these components essentially make up the diet. The remaining nutrients listed are present in significantly smaller percentages and don't significantly affect the final composition.

Next, we see pea protein, alfalfa, and chicken fat (3.1%), as well as dried eggs (3.1%). After that, the list includes chicken gravy (1.6%), salmon oil (1.2%), and a vitamin and mineral complex. Glucosamine and MSM follow (1000 mg/kg each).
Next comes a list of herbs, vegetables, and fruits: apple, carrot, spinach, plantain, and seaweed. The fructooligosaccharide and chondroitin content is also listed, followed by chamomile, mint, daisy, cranberry, anise, and fenugreek.
We can say that the composition is quite good, and if we do not discover any pitfalls upon detailed analysis of the components, this food will be able to claim a high rating.
Let's evaluate the guaranteed content of nutrients indicated on the packaging.
Guaranteed Analysis:
- Crude protein – 33%;
- Fats – 17%;
- Vegetable fiber – 3.5%;
- Ash content – 9%;
- Moisture – 8.5%;
- Omega-6 – 2.8%;
- Omega-3 – 0.9%;
- Calcium – 1.86%;
- Phosphorus – 1.42%.
This is also perfectly fine—judging by the amount of protein and fat, this food is capable of fully satisfying a dog's energy needs. However, there is a note regarding feeding amounts: the manufacturer recommends increasing or decreasing the feeding amount by +/- 10% of the daily value, depending on the dog's body type.

Let's take a closer look at each ingredient in Canagan dry dog food to find out what's behind their sometimes confusing names.
Squirrels
Two ingredients are listed as sources of animal protein: dried chicken and fresh boneless chicken. Both ingredients are excellent—they represent the best protein you can get from chicken. Moreover, fresh boneless chicken—either fillet or chicken breast—is the highest quality meat, fit for human consumption. The only caveat is that the percentage of fresh meat will drop during cooking as the water evaporates. From the 26% content, only 8-10% will remain, making it the least abundant component.
Dried eggs are another undeniably healthy and high-quality nutrient. They are a high-quality source of valuable protein, as well as vitamins and minerals, preserved thanks to a special drying technology.
In addition to animal protein, the diet also contains plant protein—pea protein and peas themselves. Besides the protein component, peas are rich in minerals. Peas are an excellent alternative to grains.
It's the high protein content that earns Canagan dog food rave reviews – breeders are thrilled to find a diet that truly satisfies their pets.
Fats
The food contains two sources of lipids: chicken fat and salmon oil. Both are good sources – chicken fat is obtained by melting down by-products after deboning (skin and trimmings), while salmon oil is obtained by melting down fish carcasses. These substances are fully absorbed by the dog's body and contain many beneficial polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Carbohydrates
The carbohydrate content of the food isn't listed, but it does contain some. Potatoes and sweet potatoes are rich sources of carbohydrates, which allow the food to provide energy for a long time after eating. It's also worth noting that sweet potatoes are rich in antioxidants, which help slow the aging process.
Both of these root vegetables are a good alternative to the grains that other manufacturers fill their feed with.
Additional components
Alfalfa is a source of fiber, ash, and vegetable protein. It also contains B vitamins and vitamin K.
Chicken gravy (or chicken sauce) is a byproduct of cooking chicken. It's a pleasant-smelling liquid used as a natural flavoring. However, we don't know the source material, so we can't be sure this nutrient is of high quality.
Chondroitin and glucosamine are building blocks for cartilage and joints. They are beneficial in any form.
MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane. Despite its scary chemical name, it's a beneficial sulfur-containing additive. It's commonly added to pet food as a premix to promote healthy coat and skin.
The herbs listed in the ingredients contain plant fibers and vitamins, but we will not consider each one separately.

Apples, carrots, and seaweed are sources of vitamins and antioxidants.
Fructooligosaccharides are prebiotics that promote healthy digestion and serve as a preventative against dysbacteriosis.
Cranberries are a preventative for urolithiasis and a powerful source of vitamin C.
The ingredients are actually quite good. High-quality raw materials, fruit, vegetable, and herbal supplements, a vitamin and mineral complex, fresh meat, and the absence of grain of any kind—all of this makes Canagan brand food truly high-quality. It's a confident, super-premium class of food!
Reviews of Kanagan dog food
Despite the fact that this food is quite new and has only recently appeared in our country, we were able to find several opinions about this nutrition:
Elena Sergeevna, the pit bull's owner:
"My Bulka eats everything and isn't picky about his food. But I wanted to find a diet that would satisfy him—his training and strong muscles were taking their toll—he was eating one and a half times the recommended amount of natural food without being full. At the dog club, they recommended trying Canagan. I'm happy—he gobbles it up with gusto, eats the recommended amount, and is full of energy and health. I'm completely satisfied with the food. It's just not available everywhere."
Oksana, owner of the husky Sever:
"Sever is a picky eater and won't eat just any food. My friend, also a dog lover, gave me a couple of handfuls of Canagan to try. What can I say—the dog gobbled it all up in no time. I bought him a bag, and he's been eating it happily ever after."
Veterinarian reviews of Kanagan food are rare – we couldn't find any specific opinions on this food from renowned doctors, and we don't want to share theories from "armchair analysts."
Price of Canagan dog food
This food is relatively new to the market and therefore not very popular. While Canagan dog food is commonplace in Moscow, in the regions you'll have to run to pet stores to find it. So, we analyzed the prices of this company's food and compiled the following summary:
