Grandin cat food

Grandin cat food is manufactured in factories in Germany and the Czech Republic certified to European standards. However, the brand itself belongs to the Russian company PETEXPERT, which trades pet food. The manufacturer cites the high content of fresh meat and the complete absence of GMO components as the main advantages of its products. The full name of the food is Grandin Holistic, which is intended to support the all-natural and balanced composition that meets the needs of cats' carnivorous nature. Whether the name lives up to its name will be revealed after reviewing this manufacturer's products.

Assortment

The manufacturer offers complete dry cat food, which can be supplemented with wet pouches or canned food if desired. The variety of products allows you to choose the right diet for your pet's age and physiological needs. However, Grandin does not offer therapeutic, dietary, or other special diets.

Dry rations

Grandin dry food production is based in the Czech Republic at the Dibaq as plant. Complete nutritional products are created here, designed for cats of all ages:

  1. Kitten with chicken for kittens (up to 12 months), pregnant and lactating cats.
  2. Sterilized with chicken for sterilized and castrated cats.
  3. Adult with beef for adult animals (1-7 years).
  4. Indoor with lamb for pets (1-7 years).
  5. Senior with lamb and rabbit for animals over 7 years old.

Each product is available in three packaging sizes: 400g, 1.5kg, and 10kg. A convenient zip-lock allows the packaging to be hermetically sealed, preventing the product from being exposed to air and preventing odors from spreading in storage.

Feed composition

We'll analyze the composition of Grandin food using the example of a grain-free dry food for spayed and neutered cats aged 1-7 years. Since product quality is typically assessed primarily based on the first five components, these are the ones you should pay particular attention to:

  1. Meat ingredients (30.5% dried chicken, 27.5% fresh chicken, 6% dried turkey, 4% pork liver).
  2. Potato.
  3. Green peas.
  4. Beet pulp.
  5. Chicken fat.

Further down the list are: alfalfa 2.5%, apples, chicken eggs, brewer's yeast, inactivated yeast, flaxseed, black currant 1%, plant complex, cold-pressed Norwegian salmon oil and a number of other useful additives.

Squirrels

The first ingredient listed is a multi-component source of animal protein, represented by two types of meat: primarily chicken with a small amount of turkey. Although the amounts of dried and fresh meat are listed in nearly equal amounts (27.5% and 30.5%, respectively), it's important to note that the amount of fresh meat is reduced by approximately four times during the kibble production process. Overall, these ingredients are beneficial for most cats, with the exception of pets with chicken protein allergies. Pork liver is not considered meat, but rather an offal, so its inclusion in the meat ingredient list seems a bit odd. Furthermore, it serves more as a flavoring agent than a source of protein.

Chicken eggs are another high-quality source of protein, but the manufacturer does not indicate in what form they were used: dried, frozen, or raw (the latter is the most preferred).

Fats

Grandin uses chicken fat as its fat source—a byproduct of chicken meat that is a good source of omega-6 fatty acids. This ingredient is often found in high-quality diets and has a more appealing taste and aroma to cats than other types of animal fat.

An additional source of healthy fats is cold-pressed Norwegian salmon oil. Cold-pressing technology preserves its beneficial nutrients better, making this component quite valuable. Flaxseed is another source of omega-3 fatty acids, but some experts argue that cats are unable to fully absorb the fatty acids found in flaxseed.

Carbohydrates

Potatoes, a carbohydrate source, are healthier for cats than grains, provided they're added in small quantities. The percentage of potato is not specified, but their presence in the top five ingredients likely indicates a significant amount. Green peas, a good source of fiber, vitamins, antioxidants, iron, and other micronutrients, are also included. However, the manufacturer doesn't specify the form in which they're used.

Other additives

Additionally, Grandin feeds contain:

  • Beet pulp is a prebiotic and a source of fiber, which is necessary to support digestion processes and the formation of normal stool.
  • Alfalfa is an additional source of protein and fiber.
  • Apples contain pectin, which improves gastrointestinal function and normalizes stool consistency.
  • Yeast (brewer's and inactivated) – contains minerals and vitamins that have a beneficial effect on digestion, the functioning of the nervous system, and the condition of the coat and skin.
  • Herbal complex – contains herbs that have beneficial properties for the digestive system (dandelion, linden, nettle), but their minimal amount is unlikely to have a real effect.
  • Chicory root provides the body with fiber and inulin, which are necessary for maintaining healthy intestinal microflora.
  • Yucca Schidigera – contains bacteria that promote normal bowel function and reduce fecal odor.

Grandin also contains a number of other additives (black currant, freshwater algae, etc.) with beneficial properties, but the quantities are too small to have a noticeable effect on cats.

Maine Coons

The advantages of this food include the use of meat components as the main protein source, their abundance, and a balanced vitamin and mineral composition. However, combining these components is a marketing ploy by the manufacturer to highlight higher-quality ingredients, regardless of their actual volume. The "grain-free" label is supported by the complete absence of grains. Among the disadvantages is the lack of precise labeling of the preservatives used. Furthermore, holistic foods should list the proportions of at least the main ingredients, which is not the case with Grandin. Therefore, Grandin falls short of the holistic category. After analyzing the ingredients, the product is more likely to be classified as super-premium.

Prices

The brand is essentially owned by the same company as the 4 Paws pet store chain, so Grandin pet food is primarily available at that chain's stores. Prices vary depending on the packaging size:

  • 400 g – from 359 rubles.
  • 1.5 kg – from 1149 rub.
  • 10 kg – from 5499 kg.
  • Canned food (70 g) and pouches (85 g) – from 80 rubles.

Reviews

Grandin dry cat food is a relatively new product on the Russian market, so reviews are still limited.

Vlada:

"In search of the perfect food for my pets, I decided to buy Grandin, especially since the price was quite reasonable. I liked the smell, the ingredients, and the appearance (small, neat kibble). However, one cat refused to eat it at all, and the other is very reluctant. The fact that both pets are not thrilled with this food makes me doubt there's something wrong with the food."

Novel:

"Considering our pet's advanced age, the store assistant recommended Grandin Senior, as he was refusing his previous food (Hills). We gradually transitioned him to Grandin, and now he eats with gusto. I'm satisfied with the ingredients, his health and stool are normal, and even his coat has improved, so I highly recommend it."

Yana:

"Based on a friend's reviews, I bought Grandin for kittens. For a couple of days, the kitten ate without much appetite, but now he's gotten used to it, and as they say, 'you can't drag him away by the ears.' I think the initial lack of appetite was due to the lack of any additives that manufacturers sometimes add as 'bait.' After a month of feeding, I can say everything is great: his stool is fine, his eyes aren't watery, and he's active."
