Gina cat food

A cat owner doesn't necessarily need to be a professional breeder or felinologist to understand the differences between the nutritional needs of humans and cats. Therefore, for those choosing commercially prepared diets, it's important to know what the food is made of and how high-quality and nutritious it is.

Every manufacturer's primary goal is to sell their product, and no one would write "mediocre nutrition" or "so-so food" on a cat food package. We see a multitude of different menus, seemingly differing only in price and packaging. In this article, we'll examine Gina cat food in detail, analyze its ingredients, and explore the strengths and weaknesses of these diets.

About the manufacturer

The Gina brand belongs to the Russian company Magna, founded in 1996 in St. Petersburg. Currently, it is one of the leading Russian companies in its sector, and its product portfolio includes brands such as Mi-Mi, Wildy, X-Cat, X-Dog, and Gina Elite, which are also quite popular in our country, judging by the number of reviews. All products are manufactured outside of Russia, at various factories specializing in the production of commercial pet food.

The X-Cat line of food is produced by the Danish company Vital Petfood Group A/S, rightfully considered a European industrial giant in the pet food industry. Gina canned cat food is manufactured in Thailand at Thai Union Manufacturing Co. Ltd., a leading manufacturer and exporter of frozen and canned seafood, fish, and canned food for dogs and cats.

The new Gina Elite diet formulas are manufactured in the UK at Golden Acres Pet Food Partners, a company renowned for its cutting-edge dry food technology. Their clients include over 350 companies worldwide, and their production scale encompasses 500 different types of dry food for our pets.

Older Gina Elite menus are manufactured in Canada, at the Spectrum Feed Services Ltd. plant. Gina dry cat food is produced in Denmark. According to Gina's official website, all recipes are developed by veterinary nutrition professionals, and the ingredients used in the food are of the highest quality and are considered "human grade," meaning they are suitable for human consumption.

Assortment

Gina and Gina Elite branded diets belong to different nutritional categories. Gina food is a super-premium cat food, while the manufacturer positions the Gina Elite diets as a holistic menu. The Gina Elite line of dry food consists of ten products. Four of them are new formulas produced in the UK. They are easily recognized by their blue and gray packaging with the UK flag in the upper left corner.

Gina's range of food

This brand's product range is easy to navigate: recipes are divided according to the age and special needs of the animal.

  • Kitten is a nutritional formula for kittens from two months to one year of age. It is also recommended as a staple diet for pregnant and nursing cats. The recipe is based on chicken, fish, and grains (rice, oats, and barley).
  • Cat Complete and Adult Cat are diets for adult pets with normal energy needs. This category includes a hypoallergenic duck and rice diet, a chicken and rice (and corn) diet, and a chicken and rice diet (with barley and oats).
  • Grain Free offers two grain-free formulas: Active and Salmon. Gina Elite Active is a high-activity cat food made with turkey. Adult Cat Salmon includes salmon and sweet potato and is gluten-free, making it hypoallergenic.
  • Sterilized – special diets for sterilized pets. This category includes two types of food: with and without corn, both containing chicken, rice, and salmon.
  • Sensitive is a specialized diet for cats with sensitive digestionIt includes easily digestible turkey and lamb, as well as probiotics for healthy microflora. This Gina Elite cat food receives positive reviews from owners of pets with digestive disorders, who note the beneficial effects of the Sensitive diet on their pet's health.
  • Hairball Control is a formula that helps remove ingested hair from your cat's intestines and also helps prevent the formation of bezoars (hairballs) in the stomach.

Gina's range of food

All Gina Elite cat food, manufactured in the UK, is packaged in 1 kg, 3 kg, and 15 kg packs. Other formulas are available in 0.4 kg, 1 kg, 3 kg, 8 kg, and 18 kg packs.

Evaluation and analysis of the composition

First of all, we'd like to point out that the new Gina Elite nutrition formulas are significantly different in composition from their previous versions. Their recipes contain significantly fewer ingredients, and, disappointingly, two out of four contain corn.

For our review, we selected a product from the new Adult Cat Duck & Rice line. This menu is marketed as a hypoallergenic Gina Elite food for adult cats, with a formula designed specifically to address food intolerances. It excludes any ingredients that can cause allergies, such as wheat, beef, pork, eggs, dairy, and soy. The manufacturer also claims to use no artificial flavors, synthetic colorings, or chemical preservatives.

The guaranteed nutritional values of the feed are as follows:

  • Protein – 30%;
  • Fats – 18%;
  • Fiber – 1.5%;
  • Humidity – 7.5%;
  • Ash content – 8%;
  • Calcium – 1.6%;
  • Phosphorus – 1.1%.

This balance suggests that carbohydrates account for 35% of the total weight, more than a third of the total weight. This is hardly a good indicator for a food claiming to be holistic. Furthermore, the fiber content is very low, half the recommended minimum. This, in our opinion, is a serious drawback of the formula.

Composition of dry food

The list of ingredients for this food consists of only 12 items, not including the vitamin and mineral supplements listed separately. This seems, to say the least, quite modest. Let's look at the first five components, which form the basis of this recipe:

  • Duck meat – 31%;
  • White rice;
  • Brown rice;
  • Poultry fat;
  • Potato.

The only quantity the manufacturer reveals is the proportion of the first ingredient—duck meat. Further down the list, there's no precise percentage information about each ingredient.

The remaining seven ingredients in the composition, in descending order:

  • chicken broth;
  • tomatoes;
  • salmon oil;
  • chicory;
  • carrot;
  • cranberry;
  • Yucca schidigera extract.

To understand how good the recipe of this Gina cat food is and whether the reviews about it are justified, let's focus on its ingredients.

Squirrels

The only source of animal protein in the recipe is ingredient #1—duck. Unless otherwise specified, it's dehydrated or filleted, and most likely raw duck, with or without bones. Furthermore, it's a good source of protein, easily digestible, and a complete food for cats.

However, it's important to remember that about 70% of the water in raw meat is lost during the cooking process. Therefore, out of the 31% in dry food, only 9-12% duck meat remains. Considering that this is the only meat component in the diet, it's safe to assume that it's too little.

Fat

The main fat component is component #4—poultry fat. It's derived from poultry tissue. While this is a good source of fatty acids for cats, this general description may conceal low-quality or insufficiently purified raw materials.

Salmon oil is also ranked #8 – a very healthy and rich source of essential omega-3 fatty acids. While a valuable ingredient, its quantity is extremely low.

Carbohydrates

The top five ingredients include two types of rice and potatoes, meaning that the proportion of meat is significantly lower than the total amount of grains and potatoes.

Brown rice is a good substitute for wheat or corn; it is better digested, does not contain gluten, and is a complex carbohydrate.

The cat eats dry food

White rice is inferior in nutritional value to brown, unrefined rice. It offers no particular benefit to cats.

In addition to complex carbohydrates, potatoes are also rich in healthy fiber and contain plant protein. Small amounts are welcome in pet food, but in large quantities they act more like cheap filler.

Other components

While ingredients listed after number 5 and on have virtually no impact on the nutritional value of the diet, the role of some is still worth noting.

  • Chicken broth is a natural flavoring that makes the product more appealing and appetizing to cats. It is added as a dry concentrate.
  • Tomatoes and carrots are often used as a source of fiber in pet food. They are also rich in carotenoids and a host of vitamins and minerals. But whether such a small amount can provide any real benefit to a cat is difficult to determine.
  • Chicory is valuable for its prebiotic inulin, which is added to eliminate dysbacteriosis.
  • Yucca extract naturally reduces the unpleasant odor of feces.
  • Cranberries are rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant. They promote urinary tract health, slow the aging process, and have a beneficial effect on heart function.

Advantages and disadvantages of the recipe

Pros:

  • high quality source of animal protein;
  • hypoallergenic cereals instead of cheap grains (corn, wheat);
  • the presence of high-quality fat (salmon oil);
  • the presence of useful additives and vegetables.

Cons:

  • excessive amounts of plant products, against the background of a lack of meat;
  • questionable source of fat (bird fat);
  • fiber deficiency.

Reviews of Gina food

It's easy to find fans of this brand online, but they're countered by detractors of Gina Elite cat food. Reviews are almost 50/50 between the two. Here are a few examples of cat owner opinions on this product:

Roman, owner of a Devon Rex:

"We tried it, but it didn't work... Two months after switching to Gina with duck, we had to pull the cat back from the brink. He used to eat Bozita, but circumstances changed, and we needed to find a replacement. Following friends' advice, I bought regular Gina, but the cat immediately refused it. I switched to English Elite from the new line, and he started eating it. The result was an intestinal obstruction; only thanks to a good doctor did we avoid surgery. Be careful."

Elena:

"I've been feeding my cat Gina Elite Sterilized for two years now. When she was little, I fed her kitten food. During this entire time, I haven't had a single complaint about the quality of the food. Milka's appearance and physical condition are absolutely normal. A one-kilogram pack lasts almost a month for a cat that weighs 4.3 kg. I feed her exclusively dry food. This food is a godsend for us."

We were unable to find any veterinarian reviews of Gina Elite cat food. This may be due to the product's quality or the brand's popularity.

Price

Price of Gina Elite cat food with duck and rice:

  • 1 kg – from 562 RUR
  • 3 kg – from 1617 RUR
  • 15 kg – from 7513 RUR

Gina Elite food for sterilized cats:

  • 1 kg – from 512 RUR
  • 3 kg – from 1466 RUR
  • 15 kg – from 7054 RUR

In conclusion, this brand's diets are attractively priced compared to other super-premium products, making them competitive. However, in terms of composition and quality, this diet isn't exactly a stellar product; it's just average. Calling it holistic is highly unlikely; the manufacturer has clearly embellished their product.
