Acana Dog Food

Acana dog food is a shining example of how dog owners' reviews, rather than aggressive, pushy advertising, are what drives a brand's popularity in our country.

More about the manufacturer

This brand was created about 30 years ago by the Canadian company Champion Petfoods, which is located in Canada's largest farming region, Alberta. Now their products are known worldwide and are exported to dozens of different countries under the Acana and Orijen (Orijen). Many grateful pet owners from around the world have left reviews calling Acana dog food the best in the world. Let's find out for ourselves—is it really that clear-cut?

Acana dog food production

Satisfied customers' opinions are certainly compelling, but somewhat subjective. Therefore, it's worth noting that Champion Petfoods products have received multiple awards for superior quality from Canadian and American independent pet nutrition associations.

Acana dog food has also received reviews from Canadian Veterinarians (CVMA), which approves and recommends this product for daily feeding of pets.

It's also important to note that all ingredients used in Acana dog food are supplied fresh or chilled. They undergo rigorous quality control, are never frozen, and are grown in environmentally friendly areas.

Champion Petfoods products have another undeniable advantage over many other brands: every stage of food production, from formula development and preparation to finished product packaging, takes place exclusively in their own factories. This is undoubtedly reflected in the quality of Acana dog food, and consumer reviews regularly confirm this.

Assortment of feed

All the concepts and innovative developments of Champion Petfoods laboratories in the field of nutrition for four-legged friends have been embodied in Acana dry dog food, which is available in four series:

  • Acana Classics;
  • Acana Heritage;
  • Acana Regionals;
  • Acana Singles.

Assortment of Acana and Orijen

Acana Classics

The Acana Classics line consists of ten diets for different breeds and ages. There's also a Light & Fit diet for overweight pets, a Sport & Agility menu for highly active dogs, and a Senior Dog menu for senior pets. What sets these diets apart is their ingredients: the stated meat content averages 50% (three types). However, Acana's Puppy Small Breed food, for example, contains 65% meat.

In addition to meat components, these formulas contain steamed oats (a source of carbohydrates), as well as potatoes, fish (salmon or flounder), and a whole list of fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Acana Heritage

Acana Heritage dry dog food is an improved iteration of the Classic recipes. These recipes feature a higher meat content (60-65%), with the exception of the Sport & Agility diet, which contains 75%. They also completely eliminate oats, potatoes, and any grains. This line offers nine different types of food, based on your pet's age, size, and activity level.

Acana Regionals

The Acana Regionals dog food category, which has the most positive reviews, includes only four types of food:
• Acana Grasslands Dog – with lamb, duck and white fish;
• Acana Wild Prairie Dog – with chicken and turkey;
• Acana Pacifica Dog – with salmon, herring and flounder;
• Acana Ranchlands Dog – with beef, lamb and bison.
This series of diets does not include variations for puppies, adults, or aging pets; each of them is positioned by the manufacturer as nutrition suitable for all breeds of dogs of any age.
This line is considered high-protein, as it contains three to five types of meat in an amount of about 70-75%.

Acana Singles

Acana Singles dry dog food, often reviewed by owners of pets with allergies, is a line consisting of three diets specifically designed for pets with digestive issues or allergy predispositions:
• Acana Duck & Bartlett Pear – duck with pear;
• Acana Pork & Butternut Squash – pork with butternut squash;
• Acana Lamb & Okanagan Apple – lamb with apple.

Please note that Acana does not produce wet dog food! Furthermore, dry food is healthier, as chewing on the kibble cleans your pet's teeth and prevents gum disease.

Analysis of feed composition

Before we evaluate the specific ingredients of Acana food, we want to highlight several important aspects of all products from this brand. The company prides itself on its patented "Biologically Appropriate" formula, which means that each individual component, as well as the overall combination of ingredients, benefits the dog's body and closely mimics the animal's natural diet.

Furthermore, all ingredients added to Acana dog food are sourced fresh from local farmers and suppliers in Alberta. They don't undergo long transportation, meaning they don't require refrigeration or chemical preservatives (with the exception of lamb from New Zealand).
To preserve the product, only natural preservatives, such as rosemary, are used, which is why the shelf life of Acana food is only 15 months.
All beneficial supplements (vitamins, minerals, amino acids) contained in Acana products are obtained from the freshest vegetables, fruits and medicinal herbs; there are no synthetic additives in these diets.

Acana dry dog food is holistic; it does not contain grains or potatoes, and only one line contains oats, which are a hypoallergenic grain.

For a detailed review, we selected a diet from the Heritage series, the Cobb Chicken & Greens variant – Acana's Cobb Chicken & Greens dog food. The nutritional breakdown is as follows: protein – 29%, fat – 17%, ash – 7%, fiber – 5%, moisture – 12%, and carbohydrates – 30%.
It's worth noting that the fiber content is excellent—not all brands can boast such a figure—and the relatively low carbohydrate content is also encouraging. After all, excess carbohydrates often lead to obesity and are the primary cause of diabetes in animals.

This Acana food, which is essentially an improved version of the Chicken & Burbank Potato formula, does not contain oats, potatoes, white rice, or starch. The first five ingredients are as follows:

Fresh boneless chicken meat 11%
Dried chicken meat 10%
Dried turkey meat 10%
Red lentils 9%
Green peas 9%

Proteins

The top three ingredients are the main sources of animal protein in this diet. However, fresh meat, which tops the list, contains water, and the percentage of this component in the food will decrease significantly after cooking.

  1. Chicken meat is one of the best sources of easily digestible proteins, and turkey is also a dietary product.
  2. Peas and lentils also contain a lot of protein, but it is of plant origin.
  3. Beans (8%), yellow peas and green lentils (5%) play the same role in the composition of this feed.
  4. Fish is also present here, but in small quantities: dried herring meat (5%) and fresh flounder meat (4%).
  5. This diet includes fresh whole eggs, which account for 4% of the total weight. This ingredient is certainly a plus for the food, as it's a source of high-quality animal protein.

Carbohydrates

Acana dog food is considered grain-free, and in this particular case, it is. Instead of grains, which are known for their high carbohydrate content, the manufacturer uses more animal-friendly ingredients such as lentils, apples, pears, beans, and peas, as well as two varieties of pumpkin and spinach. This replaces the high-glycemic carbohydrates found in corn, wheat, potatoes, barley, and white rice.

Low carbohydrate content is ideal for a healthy dog diet, as nature created them to be carnivores and they do not need grain in their diet.

Fats

One of the ingredients in this food is chicken fat (5%), which is easily digestible and essential in pets' diets. Herring oil (3%) enriches your pet's body with Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for maintaining healthy skin and coat quality.

Quite standard and high-quality ingredients for holistic diets.

Other components of the feed

In an effort to recreate dogs' natural nutrition as closely as possible, the company developed the Whole Prey concept, which states that meat ingredients should not only consist of muscle meat, but also include highly beneficial and nutritious internal organs and cartilage.

  • For this reason, Acana dog food now includes heart, liver, and kidney (6% total). These are rich in vitamins and minerals and offer excellent nutritional value. Chicken cartilage (2%) is a natural source of chondroitin, which is beneficial for joints.
  • Freeze-dried turkey and chicken livers make Acana dry dog food more flavorful and delicious.
  • The ingredients list further includes a whole list of medicinal herbs and berries, such as chicory root, milk thistle, rose hips, blueberries, as well as dried seaweed, kale, carrots, turmeric, and prebiotic bacteria.

Each phytocomponent on the list is aimed at improving the animal's health and strengthening its vital functions. Chicory root, for example, helps improve the nervous and cardiovascular systems. It is rich in pectin, vitamins B, C, and E, and is also used for dysbiosis and as an anti-inflammatory. Cranberries and blueberries are used to prevent urological diseases, and are also natural antioxidants that slow down aging.

Advantages and disadvantages of feed

Like any other dog food, Acana also has both advantages and disadvantages that you should pay attention to:

Advantages

  • Fresh and high quality ingredients;
  • Low carbohydrate;
  • Vitamin and mineral supplements are not artificial, but are contained in the feed components themselves;
  • Grain free.

Flaws

In our opinion, the only, but clearly significant, drawback of Acana dog food is the price. It's also worth noting that the line doesn't offer wet food, which makes it somewhat inaccessible for some dogs.

Reviews of food

As usual, we analyzed and selected the most relevant online reviews of our food, from both customers and veterinarians. Below you'll find reviews of our tested Acana dog food.

Customer reviews

Dog owners are eager to share their opinions on various pet food brands. We've reviewed numerous reviews of Acana dry dog food and are ready to share them:

The owner of a 6-month-old puppy, Oksana:

I had no experience raising dogs, so I had to learn from my mistakes. When we got a puppy, we had to decide what to feed him. Previously, he ate dry food, so we decided to switch him from economy to super premium. Then the problems started – vomiting, upset stomach, and even just refusing to eat. We switched to natural food, and the problems doubled. Our vet suggested Acana. I chose the grain-free lamb formula, and I haven't regretted it for a second: over the past three months, the puppy has been gaining weight well, all his lab results are normal, and he has no gastrointestinal issues.

The owner of 4-year-old Dalmatian Oscar, Julia:

My dog has allergies, so his dull coat, dry skin, irritation, and constant scratching are a constant headache. We've tried a bunch of brands, and while there would be brief improvements, everything would return with a vengeance. At the pet store, the salespeople recommended trying Acana Singles, but after checking the price of Acana dog food, I decided not to buy it. After Oscar's latest course of treatment, I figured out the cost and decided to buy a small pack to try. The first changes were visible within a month, and it's been about a year since then, and my dog looks great. This food has been a lifesaver for me!

Traditionally, online reviews of pet food range from positive to less so. Here are a couple of examples:

Reviews from veterinarians

Hobbyists and professionals are like two sides of the same coin. What do veterinarians think of this brand? After reviewing numerous sources, we can draw the following conclusions about veterinarian reviews of Acana dog food:

The most crucial period in a pet's life is puppyhood. It's the foundation of their health, and proper nutrition is 90% guaranteed to ensure their future well-being. Therefore, experts recommend Acana dry puppy food, which is described in reviews as "one of the best," "includes everything necessary," or "a complete diet."

Excessive weight in pets is often underestimated by owners, especially after spaying, and can cause serious health problems over time. In such cases, switching to a food formulated for neutered dogs is recommended, and Acana Light & Fit has proven effective in helping dogs lose weight and maintain their body condition.

  • Rinata, thank you for enlightening me. I was wondering where Acana had gone. Now it's all clear. By the way, we also switched Laura to Primordial; it was recommended to us at the pet store as a temporary replacement. But for now, I think we'll stick with it.

  • We fed Orijen for a long time until it started disappearing from the shelves. Then I came across information in the comments somewhere that products from the Akana and Orijen factories were temporarily banned from import due to GMOs. I thought it was just competitors and fake reviews. But the Rosselkhoznadzor website actually has such a document... We switched quickly. Honestly, I didn't even bother choosing the new food; I bought it on the recommendation of a salesperson at the pet store, Primordial, who raved about it. I've already read up on it at home. The ingredients are even better than Orijen's. The cat appreciates it and eats it with pleasure. She made the transition well, and there were no surprises in the litter box. Now she's on Primordial.
