Canephron for cats

Canephron is a herbal remedy used in cats for urological conditions. This medication, developed by the German company Bionorica, was originally intended for humans and has passed all necessary tests. However, it has since been successfully used in veterinary medicine. Since the medication is based on herbal extracts, it is considered safe for animals. However, there are some restrictions on its use, so consult a veterinarian before beginning treatment.

General description

Canephron is a medication based on a complex of medicinal herbs: lovage root, centaury, and rosemary leaves. It is available in two forms: tablets (pills) and oral drops. Although each dosage form has its own characteristics, they are equally effective. Both tablets and drops can be used for cats.

The drops are a hydroalcoholic herbal extract. In addition to the active ingredients (medicinal plants), the solution contains ethanol and specially purified water. It is a yellow-brown liquid. A slight turbidity may develop during prolonged storage. It has a characteristic herbal aroma. 50 and 100 ml bottles are used for packaging. The main feature of these bottles is their cap with a built-in dropper. This allows for quick and easy administration of the required amount of medication.

In addition to herbs, the tablets contain the following auxiliary components:

  • cornstarch;
  • lactose monohydrate;
  • povidone;
  • corn oil, etc.

These orange, biconvex, round tablets have a smooth surface. They are small in size and are packaged in strips of 20. A cardboard box contains three strips, or 60 tablets.

How it works

The combination of medicinal herbs determines the drug's action. It is effectively used to treat urological diseases due to its diuretic effect. The medication promotes the elimination of urea from the body. creatinine and uric acid.

Canephron also has the following properties:

  • relieves inflammatory processes that occur in the kidneys, bladder or urinary tract;
  • eliminates spasms and pain;
  • improves the functioning of the urinary system;
  • normalizes the process of urination;
  • prevents the proliferation of pathogenic microorganisms;
  • prevents the development of complications.

This medication enhances the effectiveness of antibacterial treatment. It addresses the underlying cause of the disease and eliminates symptoms (pain, cramping, and burning during urination). It also helps prevent recurrence of chronic illness.

When used

While the instructions for use are written for humans, Canephron is prescribed for cats in similar situations, specifically for urological conditions. It is typically given to animals with the following health problems:

  • with pyelonephritis;
  • with glomerulonephritis;
  • for cystitis;
  • for inflammation of the urinary tract.

The drug is often used for pets and urolithiasisThis medication is well suited for preventing recurrence of this condition, including after surgery. Since the herbal remedy increases daily urine volume and prevents urine stagnation in the kidneys or bladder, the risk of recurrence of stones is reduced.

Sometimes Canephron is prescribed for renal failure (CRF) in cats As a supportive therapy. This herbal remedy cannot cure an animal of an incurable disease, but it can improve urinary function, reduce the pet's suffering, and prolong its life.

Sad cat

The medication can be used for acute and chronic illnesses caused by bacteria, hypothermia, poor nutrition, and other factors. Canephron is typically used as a monotherapy for prophylaxis, and for treatment, it is combined with antibiotics, symptomatic medications, and other agents depending on the specific nature of the condition.

How to use the tablets

If you're using Canephron tablets to treat your cat, the dosage is 1/4-1/2 tablet, depending on the animal's size. For small pets, a quarter of a tablet is sufficient, but for larger animals (over 5 kg), the dose should be increased to half. Your veterinarian should calculate the exact dosage.

Because the tablets have a distinctive herbal aroma, cats categorically refuse to ingest them voluntarily. Even mixing them into food is unlikely to work, although there are no such restrictions. The pet will smell the scent and refuse the treat. Therefore, it's best to administer Canephron tablets to your cat as follows:

  1. Divide the dragee into the required number of pieces depending on the dosage.
  2. Pick up your pet. To prevent scratching, wrap it in a blanket or an old large towel.
  3. Place the baby on his tummy or tilt his head back, and then put the pill in on the root of the tongue.
  4. Stroke your neck or blow into your nose to trigger the swallowing reflex. To help the tablet slide down easier, you can hide it in a small piece of butter.
  5. Give your cat clean water to drink using a syringe without a needle or a rubber bulb with a soft tip. If you don't let your cat swallow the pill, the bitter taste may cause foaming at the mouth and increased salivation.

How to give a pill to a cat

The pills should be administered twice daily. The course of treatment is usually long—up to 30 days. If necessary, treatment is repeated after 2-3 weeks.

Features of using drops

If Canephron solution is used, the average dosage for cats is 1-2 drops per 1 kg of body weight, but the dosage may be adjusted by a veterinarian depending on the specifics of the disease and the symptoms present. Like tablets, the drops should be administered twice daily for 20-30 days. To prevent relapses, courses are repeated periodically. The intervals between courses are determined by the veterinarian.

Since Canephron is an alcohol solution, it is diluted with water. Place the required amount of medication into the water (a couple of milliliters) and let it sit for a while to allow the alcohol to evaporate. Then, use a syringe to feed the cat the prepared solution. Afterward, you can give the cat clean water to remove the bitterness. Mixing the medication with food is permitted, but most animals reject this treat due to the strong herbal odor.

Existing restrictions

The instructions for Canephron list contraindications for humans, which also apply to cats. The medication should not be given to animals in the following cases:

  • in case of intolerance to the components;
  • for stomach ulcers or duodenum;
  • in case of liver failure.

The herbal remedy should also be discontinued in cases of severe liver disease. If the animal has heart disease accompanied by edema, the medication should only be used under a doctor's supervision.

Owner reviews

Oksana, owner of a Scottish Straight cat:

"We were prescribed Canephron in combination with other medications for urolithiasis, which developed as a result of pyelonephritis. We've been taking the pills for three weeks. There have been no relapses so far. The cat tolerates the medication well. Overall, I'm not worried; it contains only natural herbal ingredients."

Ksenia, owner of a 6-year-old cat:

"I noticed my cat was frequently going to the litter box, but only came out after a couple of drops. We went to the hospital and were diagnosed with cystitis. One of the medications used was Canephron. I didn't have to buy it; it was left over from my treatment (I have kidney problems). Getting the drops into my cat was no easy task. We mixed them with milk and added them to her canned food—no results. We had to force them into her mouth. But our efforts were worth it; after just five days, she started going to the toilet normally, and we completed the entire course (3 weeks)."
