What is the memory of cats: how long does it last?

How long does a cat's memory last? Why do cats forget some things as soon as they lose their sight, while others can remember the distance of thousands of kilometers to their home? Cats' memory is structured differently than humans', and despite numerous experiments, its capabilities have not yet been fully understood.

Features of the cat brain

The structure of a cat's brain is directly linked to their intelligence and learning abilities. Brain size and its ratio to body weight play a significant role in assessing an animal's cognitive abilities. According to research, a cat's brain accounts for approximately 0.91% of its total body weight.

Neural tissue consists of a huge number of neurons connected by synapses—special connections through which signals are transmitted. When a cat recalls an event or information, an electrical impulse travels along the neural circuits, activating the relevant areas of the brain and strengthening the connections between neurons. This enables the storage and subsequent retrieval of information. The human brain functions on the same principle.

Although the total number of neurons in cats is smaller than in humans and dogs, it still significantly exceeds that of many other animal species, confirming their high level of mental capacity.

Can a cat remember?

A cat is a caring and attentive mother, tenderly caring for her kittens. However, if the kittens are separated from her, after a while she loses interest in them, and when reunited she may not recognize them at all. A logical question arises: does this mean cats have no memory?

In fact, scientists have long studied animal memory and conducted numerous experiments. Research has shown that cats are able to retain information even longer than dogs. Furthermore, they have excellent visual memory—in some respects, it's comparable to that of monkeys.

Cat owners know full well that their pets are well-versed in their daily routines. They remember what time their owners usually return home and sit by the door in anticipation. Cats also remember when it's time to get up in the morning or go to bed in the evening, adapting to their human schedule.

Moreover, these animals have quite a selective memory. Some cats can't learn that they shouldn't scratch the sofa or where the litter box is, but in other situations, they demonstrate astonishing abilities. There are cases of cats finding their way home over vast distances using only memory and instinct.

FactIn 2013, a monument to Semyon the cat was erected in Murmansk. He accomplished a true feat, traveling over 1,500 kilometers from Moscow to Murmansk. The journey took him six years, but he was finally returned to his owners.

The main difference between feline and human memory is its selectivity. While humans remember everything they see, cats discard irrelevant information and retain important facts for a long time. For example, cats don't forget people who have wronged them.

How much information is in a cat's head?

Scientists have wondered how much information a cat's memory can hold. But they haven't been able to establish a definitive answer. The line between memorization and instinct is unclear. Although cats generally have a smaller memory than humans, they can retain a considerable amount of information. By discarding all unnecessary information and retaining the essentials, they retain all the knowledge they need to survive.

The journal Behavioral Processes published some interesting information. It was reported that four-legged friends have episodic memory, contrary to the belief that only humans possess it. What abilities does this give cats? It turns out that cats are capable of recalling past events if they encounter them again.

This was discovered during experiments by Japanese scientists with food bowls. The animals remembered which bowls contained edible food and which contained inedible items, and subsequently first examined the bowls from which they had previously eaten. Several different tests were conducted on dozens of animals, and each confirmed the cats' ability to remember the circumstances of their previous encounters. It became clear that cats remember not only where the food is, but also what to examine first to find it.

Scientists from Germany conducted an orientation experiment. First, they gathered a group of cats from one city, took them some distance away from their homes, and tested whether they could find their way back home. All the animals successfully completed the task. Then, they made it more challenging. The cats were placed in a large, covered maze. The structure had 24 exits facing different directions. Ninety-eight percent of the animals chose the exit leading to their home.

Cats have far more capabilities than you might think. They use their memory, instincts, and sense of direction, which sometimes leads to surprising situations.

How long does a cat remember its owner?

Cats navigate the world not only through sight but also through hearing and smell. Their highly developed sense of smell allows them to recognize their owner by scent and approach the door before they arrive. If the scent changes, the animal uses other cues, such as their voice or characteristic gait.

Scientists have proven that cats remember the voice of their human well, recognizing them even through a door or from a recording. Thanks to their well-developed long-term memory, pets can remember a loved one for a very long time, especially if that person played an important role in their lives. Cats also remember people who interacted with them regularly or gave them treats for a long time.

Interesting facts

The type of memory cats have and how long it lasts are clearly demonstrated by the unique cases of homecoming that are known about these animals.

  1. An interesting case was described in the newspaper "Arguments and Facts" in 2012. The owners of a cat named Barsik traveled from Rostov-on-Don to the Luhansk region for a visit. He ran away, frightened by a dog, and was never found. However, five weeks later, the owners found him on the doorstep of their home in Rostov. He was severely emaciated and injured, but otherwise in good condition.
  2. Another amazing story happened in France in 1963, involving a cat named Moumussou. He went with his owner to visit his parents and disappeared before they left. The owner was forced to return home alone. Ten months later, his pet returned home, having traveled 747 kilometers.
  3. It took Mak the cat 6 years to return home after he lost in the UK. He and his owner were swimming in a canal when Mac suddenly jumped into the water. He was later found by shelter volunteers and traced back to his owners through his microchip. During this time, Mac hadn't forgotten his home at all. Upon seeing his owner, he joyfully jumped into his lap.

  • My one-year-old cat, in early August, was frightened by the car ride and the unknown location, jumped out of the car and disappeared in an unknown direction. The search was unsuccessful. I left the dacha in early September, inconsolable. At the end of September, a neighbor called me and said that my cat began coming to her yard. At first, she did not let me near her, and then, the neighbor, seizing the moment, took her in her arms and brought her to my home in Moscow. She remembered me and her place in the apartment and my two cats, with whom she grew up, although she was very thin and shabby. My joy knew no bounds.

    • Hello! It's good that you found it. But my advice: deworm your cat (twice, with a 10-14 day break between doses). Be sure to vaccinate 10-14 days after the second deworming! If you have a cat that goes outside, an annual rabies vaccination is essential. It would also be a good idea to vaccinate against other infectious diseases to protect your pet in the future.

  • Cats remember people who hurt them or frightened them, and the circumstances surrounding it, for their entire lives. One of my relatives, a rather unintelligent young man, couldn't think of anything cleverer to amuse himself than vacuuming his cat. My cat! As a result, even ten years later, my affectionate and friendly cat remained very aggressive toward that particular person, attacking them as soon as they showed up at the door. He remembered the offender for the rest of his life!

    • Oh, what a pity) now your friend will probably grieve and repent of his sin all his life?
