How to make a pedigree for a dog

A dog's pedigree is proof of its origin and breed conformity. This document is required:

  • if the owner wants to be sure that he has acquired a purebred animal with healthy heredity;
  • to admit a male or female dog to breeding;
  • to register with a kennel club;
  • when registering an animal for participation in exhibitions and competitions.

How to make a pedigree for a dog

It is also necessary to obtain a pedigree for a dog if it is intended to be used for hunting. The Hunting Rules, approved by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Russian Federation (No. 512, paragraph VI), stipulate that hunting with a dog that does not have documents, certifying its pedigree, can be fined.

To obtain a pedigree for your dog, you need to contact your local RKF office or a canine club. You can also verify the authenticity of your existing pedigree there.

Documents required to obtain a pedigree

A dog's pedigree is drawn up on the basis of a birth certificate (metrics), which is issued to puppies aged 1.5 to 2 months.

If a puppy's "puppy code" is lost, it can be restored: upon registration with the club, all puppies are branded (the brand can be applied to the belly or ear). If the brand can be read, a duplicate birth certificate is issued at the RKF office or cynological club using this "dog code," which is entered into the RKF database.

If a puppy hasn't received a birth certificate, hasn't been branded or microchipped, or if its parents don't have documents proving its origin, it can receive a "zero" pedigree. To obtain one, contact the Russian Union of Cynologists. If the dog meets all breed standards, the SKOR will issue such a certificate.

It's also possible to restore an existing pedigree if it was lost or destroyed. To do so, the pet owner must submit an application to the local RKF office or kennel club, enclosing copies of the passport pages containing the pet owner's last name, first name, patronymic, and place of residence.

There are cases where a dog's pedigree is offered for sale. For example, the owner doesn't show the dog, doesn't use it for hunting, or the dog has died, and therefore a certificate of conformity to the breed is not required. Such actions are legally illegal.

What types of pedigrees are there for dogs?

Since the beginning of 2020, several types of pedigrees have been in existence in Russia – old and new.

A certificate containing information about the last generation of ancestors. This old-style document is registered in the RKF studbook. With it, the dog can be used for hunting and participate in shows held within the country.

A new-style pedigree certificate. It displays information on three generations of ancestors. This document entitles the dog to participate in international cynological shows and competitions. Only the new-style pedigree certificates are issued for puppies born after December 1, 2019.

What information is included in a dog's pedigree?

The old-style certificate of a dog's origin—the RKF pedigree—looks standard:

  • The front side features two logos (a planet with meridians and the head of a hunting dog). Below is a list of abbreviations, as well as the addresses and contact numbers of the RKF.
  • On the back side are the owner's details, name, gender, breed, color of the dog, date of birth, tattoo number, and pedigree numbers of the ancestors.
  • In the lower right corner of the document is the signature of the head of the branch of the cynological federation.

The new pedigree is written in two languages—Russian and English. The document certifying the dog's origin and breed conformity includes:

  • registration certificate number;
  • names and addresses of the breeder and owner;
  • nickname, breed, gender of the dog, date of birth;
  • brand number or chip code;
  • Breeds, colors, dates of birth, results of medical examination of three generations of the dog's ancestors, and their pedigree numbers.
