What documents are needed?
Mandatory documents for a purebred adult dog include:
- A veterinary dog passport contains information about vaccinations, antiparasitic treatments (for helminths and ectoparasites), and other medical procedures. It is required for traveling abroad or obtaining veterinary certificates for participating in exhibitions.
- Pedigree (Certificate of Origin) – issued according to a standard RKF (Russian Cynological Federation) template when the pet is 2-15 months old and contains information about the club name, nickname, sex and entry number of the pet in the stud book, ancestors up to the 4th generation and their successes at exhibitions.
When purchasing a purebred pet, the owner is required to provide a puppy passport (puppy card, birth certificate) – the primary document confirming the animal's noble origins. In addition to information about the pet itself (tag number, name, gender, color, birthday, and parents' names), it contains information about the owner, the organization selling the puppy, and its seal.

Important! When purchasing a puppy, check that the numbers on the ear (groin) tag and the numbers on the puppy's passport (card) are the same.
The metric does not give the owner the right to participate in breeding and requires a mandatory exchange in the future. pedigreeIf it has been lost, it can be restored using the dog's tattoo number.
At the owner's request, other documents can also be issued for the pet (training course certificates, confirmation of hunting qualities, etc.).
Registration procedure
Since the only mandatory documents for a dog are a veterinary passport and a pedigree, let's look at the procedure for obtaining them in more detail.
Veterinary passport
It's a small booklet of 10-12 pages, each containing two columns: the date and the procedures performed. Each entry is certified by the veterinarian's signature and the clinic's seal.

Where can I obtain documents for my dog? A veterinary passport can be obtained at a public or private veterinary clinic, where specialists will fill it out with the necessary information. It is usually issued at the same time as the first vaccination, so the cost will depend on the type of vaccination and where it was received.
No documents are required for registration, other than the owner's passport, the information from which will be entered into the veterinary passport. You will also need to provide the pet's name and breed, and the veterinarian will enter the remaining information. As your dog ages and undergoes new procedures, be sure to update the information in the veterinary passport and ensure it remains accurate.
International Veterinary Passport
To obtain permission to export a dog outside of Russia, its owner must obtain an international veterinary passport. It looks slightly different from a standard veterinary passport and contains information in two languages. In addition to the standard information, some passports also include space for a photo of the dog and a record of its physiological parameters. To avoid problems when attempting to travel abroad, it is important to verify the accuracy of the information and ensure that there are no corrections.
Important! Vaccination requirements for dogs vary by country, so it's important to check in advance what vaccinations are required for your specific situation.

Pedigree
A pedigree is the most important document for a purebred dog, and is processed by the RKF office located at 9 Gostinichnaya Street in Moscow. Recently, the Federation has only partnered with legal entities, so to obtain a pedigree, you must apply with your puppy's passport to any kennel club or breeder that provides such services. They will forward the documents to the Moscow office of the Russian Federation for pedigree registration, but a separate fee is charged for these services, which is determined by each provider. The purpose of these services will be discussed below.
You can obtain one of the following document types from the RKF:
- internal pedigree – used in Russia and completed in Russian;

- The RKF Registration Certificate (Pedigree) is issued for dogs participating in international shows. It is completed in Latin characters, so the owner must provide the dog's name in English when submitting the documents.

Dog breeders recommend registering a pedigree after your pet is six months old. This way, the breeder will have time to submit and register the puppy's litter information to the RKF, so there's no need to wait. The deadline for registering a pedigree is 15 months.
The cost of registering a dog's pedigree with the RKF depends on the urgency of the registration and other details:
- 600 rubles for Russian citizens within 15 days – 600 rubles and twice as much if processed within 2 hours.
- 1,500 rubles for foreigners and animals registered abroad within 15 days and twice as much if processed within 2 hours.
Additionally, you must pay the cost of the dog club's intermediary services and, if necessary, postal delivery.
Registration of documents without a pedigree
If the owner is confident that the puppy is descended from purebred parents and meets breed standards, they can try to obtain a zero pedigree, which will confirm the pet's affiliation with a specific breed. However, this does not grant the right to receive the Champion title at regional shows or participate in international shows. It is issued based on a certificate issued after three experts have assessed the dog's compliance with breed standards during its participation in regional shows.
Important! According to as-yet unconfirmed rumors, the issuance of zero pedigrees has been suspended.
