Methods for toilet training a kitten

Many cat owners dream of their kitten learning to use a toilet. After all, there are so many immediate benefits—everything is hygienic, and you don't need to spend money on a litter box or litter. It's a fairy tale. So it's no surprise that the question of how to potty train a kitten indoors worries many owners of four-legged friends. However, cats are extremely clean animals and meticulous about their hygiene, so owners typically have no problem training their kittens to use a toilet.

Pros and cons

Before we begin training, let's look at the pros and cons of toilet training a kitten. Not everything is so clear-cut in reality, so we recommend that you familiarize yourself with it.

Advantages

  • Financial benefits. You'll save significantly on litter and other litter box accessories.
  • Instant cleaning. Cleaning is made simple. Just press a button and flush the toilet.
  • No unpleasant odor. If you remember to flush your pet's litter box regularly, the toilet will be odor-free.

Flaws

  • The danger of a cat falling into the toilet. Even if a cat is fully toilet trained, there's always a risk of falling in. The cat might lose its balance on the toilet rim and end up in the cold water, which could completely discourage it from using the toilet.
  • Inconvenience for the cat. Admit it, your cat may simply find it uncomfortable trying to maintain balance when they need to be completely relaxed.
  • Lack of hygiene. If your cat shares the toilet with you, be prepared for the toilet to be constantly covered in paw prints and cat hair.
  • You shouldn't leave a cat unattended for long periods of time. If you need to go away for a few days, you can always leave a litter box with high-quality litter without worrying about your cat eliminating elsewhere. The toilet is more complicated, as if you can't regularly flush the toilet, your cat's natural cleanliness will likely force it to find a more convenient spot.

How to toilet train a kitten

Kitten toilet training schemes

There are several ways to properly potty train a kitten at home. However, two things should be noted before you begin potty training your kitten:

  1. First of all, you need to train your kitten to use a litter box.
  2. Secondly, A kitten must be at least 4 months old to be large enough to avoid drowning in a toilet.

Toilet training usually doesn't take long if you start litter training a kitten at an early age. Once the kitten has confidently started using the litter box, you can begin gradual potty training.

The first method

The first way to teach a kitten to use the toilet:

  1. The tray should be placed directly next to the toilet.
  2. The litter box should be raised daily. Shoe boxes, stacks of newspapers, or magazines are commonly used for this purpose. The structure should be as stable as possible and accessible to the kitten. It's essential to keep the litter box clean and change the litter regularly.
  3. Once the litter box is level with the toilet, place it directly on the toilet rim. From this point on, the kitten will begin to get used to climbing onto the toilet.
  4. Once the kitten has adapted to jumping onto the toilet (after 3-4 days), you can remove the litter box completely. Now place a thick cardboard plate under the toilet rim. Place a small container on it and add some litter. Note that the cardboard plate should flex slightly so the kitten can seek a more stable position and learn to shift its center of gravity correctly. The kitten should become accustomed to this design within 3 days.
  5. Next, remove the container and cut a small hole in the toilet seat. Sprinkle some litter around the hole. Make the hole very small to avoid scaring the kitten.
  6. Gradually, the hole should be enlarged (every three days) until it reaches the diameter of the toilet bowl itself. The plate can then be removed, as by this point the kitten will have become accustomed to the larger hole in the toilet bowl. If all manipulations are performed correctly, the kitten should begin to use the toilet bowl independently.

The second method

Another way to toilet train a kitten in an apartment involves using special training aids and trainers. The following are available special toilet training aids:

The "Sharp Cat" remedy

If you want your kitten to learn to use the toilet as quickly as possible, consider "Sharp Cat." These drops contain a specific, natural scent for kittens and adult cats. While the scent is virtually neutral to humans, cats are always sensitive to it.

"Metkiy Kot" drops are typically used for litter training cats, but when training a kitten to use a toilet, this product can significantly speed up the process. To do this, while installing a cardboard plate with a slit under the toilet rim, moisten the litter placed around the hole with 2-3 drops of the product. Your kitten will be tempted to mask the smell of this product with its own, and will fearlessly climb onto the toilet to do so. Just be very careful not to spill the product on any other surface, as the kitten will inevitably use it to relieve itself.

Special training equipment

If you don't want to mess around with cardboard sheets and constantly cutting holes, there are special training devices in the form of ready-made toilet seats. A large number of training devices are currently available, such as CitiKitty Cat, Litter Kwitter, DomaKot, and others.

CitiKitty Cat

The trainer comes with a special toilet seat with removable rings, an additional toilet seat that allows you to return to the previous level, a bag of catnip, and detailed instructions.

Application:

Place the special seat without a slot on the toilet rim and lower the seat. Pour a small amount of litter into the seat and add some catnip to stimulate your cat's interest. After 5-7 days, cut the first hole along the designated mark. As your cat gets used to the seat, increase the hole's diameter. If problems arise and your cat becomes frightened, you can use a spare seat to return to the previous level.

Advantages:

  • This trainer allows you to return to the previous level, thanks to the presence of an additional attachment.
  • The plastic from which the exercise machine is made is absolutely smooth, odorless, and hypoallergenic.
  • Affordable price.
  • Duration of training: 3-5 weeks.
  • Cost: 750-1000 rubles.

Litter Kwitter

The kit for this exercise machine includes: a basic tray, three attachments of different colors: red, orange and green, and detailed instructions.

Application:

First, train your cat to use a basic litter box on the floor with litter. Then, gradually adjusting the height, place the basic litter box on the toilet rim along with the first red seat without a hole and add a small amount of litter. Replace the seat every 10-15 days as your cat gets used to the hole's diameter.

Advantages:

  • This simulator can be used several times.
  • The nozzles have ready-made holes of the required diameter.
  • The exercise machine is made of high-quality plastic and is completely safe to use.
  • Duration of training: 1-2 months.
  • Cost: 2400-3000 rubles.

HomeCat

The kit for this trainer includes: a special tray for toilet training, an additional tray that allows you to go back a step, and detailed instructions.

Application:

Move the regular litter box closer to the toilet and gradually (every three days) raise it to the level of the toilet. Next, place the special litter box on the toilet and secure it with the toilet seat. At this point, remove the regular litter box. Gradually, as your cat gets used to it, increase the opening diameter until the nozzle matches the diameter of the toilet bowl.

Advantages:

  • A special toilet seat is made of thin plastic that bends under the animal's weight and helps develop the animal's ability to balance and shift its center of gravity to the toilet rim.
  • Duration of training: 3-4 weeks.
  • Cost: 900-1500 rubles.

As you can see, the process for training a cat to use a toilet with special attachments is identical to the one described above. The only difference is that instead of a regular litter box, a special training tray is usually used, which also needs to be gradually raised to the toilet's level. After this, a special hole is drilled in the center of the tray or the tray is replaced with a different one with a pre-drilled hole. Training with a special trainer usually takes no more than two months.

Other means

There are also other aids for training a kitten to use the toilet in an apartment.

Toilet seat

We also recommend checking out a special plastic toilet seat. This seat is a special plastic structure, reminiscent of a litter box grate, that attaches directly to the toilet bowl. You can optionally place a small amount of litter on top of the grate to make it more comfortable for your kitten. This seat is a worthy alternative to a litter box and allows a small kitten or cat to comfortably sit on the toilet without the risk of falling into the water.

Toilet training spray

Even if you've followed all the recommendations and the gradual toilet training process, your kitten may still be reluctant to use the toilet on its own or may occasionally mark in other places. In this case, you should purchase a special toilet training spray. This spray has a specific scent for cats, which encourages them to eliminate in a specific location. Try applying the spray directly to the toilet seat or the litter around the toilet seat opening during toilet training.

Currently, the range of products designed to correct the behavior of cats is quite wide:

  • Api-San smart spray,
  • Beaphar Catty Home,
  • Ms. Kiss,
  • Himola and others.

The cost of toilet training products for kittens: 150-500 rubles.

It is recommended to purchase a litter box deterrent along with the litter box training kit. This deterrent should be sprayed in areas where the cat should not eliminate. Before using the deterrent, the areas to be treated should be cleaned with water and a disinfectant to eliminate the urine odor.
There's a wide range of weaning products available: Antigadin, Ms. Kiss "Weans off pooping," Api-San "Weans off pooping," and others. These products cost between 150 and 300 rubles.

General recommendations

  • Pay attention to the material used to make your cat's toilet training equipment. The plastic should be smooth, hypoallergenic, and odor-free. The strong odor of plastic can permanently deter a cat from using the toilet.
  • If your cat is significant in size and weight, it may not notice a change in the hole's diameter of a few centimeters. However, if your kitten is still young, consider having a spare toilet seat attachment with your training kit. This will be helpful if the rapidly increasing hole's diameter frightens the kitten and you need to take a step back.
  • Ensure your cat has unimpeded access to the toilet. Keep the toilet door slightly open at all times. Keep the toilet lid open as well. Your cat should always have access to the toilet, even when you're not home.
  • You will need to clean the toilet using neutral, fragrance-free disinfectants, as cats are extremely sensitive and cannot tolerate strong odors.
  • Some owners train their cats to flush using a special pedal connected to the toilet tank. This might seem like a good idea, but be prepared for a cat that has learned to flush will occasionally enter the toilet and press the pedal just to hear the sound of water.
  • To reinforce the kitten's training, it may be helpful to use a reward method. After each toileting session, give the kitten a small treat; this approach will help the correct habit become established more quickly.
  • Despite your best efforts, your kitten or even an adult cat may simply be afraid of the sound of the toilet: the water filling and flushing. In this case, while sitting on the toilet, pick up your pet and pet them. Then, flush the toilet several times, continuing to pet them. Your pet should understand that there's nothing scary about the toilet's sound and can safely use it.

Please note that toilet training products are not suitable for cats:

  • Kittens under 4 months old, as they are still too small and can fall into the toilet.
  • Pregnant cats, because they have difficulty balancing on the edge of the toilet, and a fall can cause injury to the fetus.
  • Animals with disabilities, with a missing or shortened leg, due to the inability to jump to the height of the toilet and maintain proper balance.
  • Sick animals suffering from musculoskeletal disorders, as well as genitourinary and gastrointestinal tract diseases. If a cat has urinary problems or is constipated, it will be very difficult for it to maintain a proper position on the toilet for long periods of time.

Always remember that training a kitten or adult cat to use a specific toilet location is a lengthy, labor-intensive, and demanding process. Don't rush. If the process fails, never scold your cat. Be patient and gentle with your pet, and positive results will follow.

This is perhaps the first and most pressing question that arises when a new cat arrives. Of course, one could optimistically assure you that no particular problems will arise, but... things aren't always so simple. Of course, there are cases where simply showing a kitten its litter box is enough—and that's it—no further difficulties will arise. This does happen, although unfortunately, not as often as we would like. Therefore, it's best to get ready to begin the training process thoroughly and learn the methods for toilet training a kitten.
