Choosing a name for a black male and female kitten

Have you decided to bring home a black kitten (male or female) but can't decide what to name your pet? We'll help you choose traditional, rare, or simply fun names, and offer a wide range of options that take into account a wide variety of nuances.

A black cat in your home is a great success, especially if the kitten chose you on its own (whether it strayed or caught your attention when you first met it).

Traditional

This category contains the most common names that come to mind when owners are deciding what to name a black kitten. If you have elderly relatives in your home who might have trouble remembering fancy, unusual names, you can safely opt for a traditional name.

Although such nicknames are ubiquitous, that doesn't make them any less popular. Humans, after all, have many popular names, which doesn't stop parents from choosing them again and again.

What to name a black kitten, male or female

With color binding

Since ancient times, many cultures have believed that black cats can protect the home from any misfortune, as well as bring prosperity and good luck to their owners. There are also many superstitions about this, which, incidentally, can also help protect the home from unwanted people. But in reality, for most owners who don't seek sacred meaning in everything, black cats are simply incredibly cute, affectionate, and beloved animals, blessed by nature with such a special fur coat.

Beyond the simple "Chernysh," there are many nicknames that highlight the unique shade of a pet's charcoal-graphite coat. The names on this list will be relevant for those looking for original ideas for naming an all-black kitten (male or female), or a kitten with minimal hints of other colors.

How to choose a name for a black kitten

Sorceress

We'll leave it to the owners to decide whether it was worth turning to mysticism when choosing a name for a black male kitten or a female cat they brought home. It all depends on their personal interests and the attitudes of other family members toward the topic.

Phonetics of the name

Many believe that animals don't care what they're called. But zoologists and veterinarians disagree, as cats also have their own language, in which every sound has its own meaning.

When choosing a name, keep in mind that hissing sounds ("S," "Sh," "Shch," "Ch," "Zh") in cat language are a sign of aggression. Consequently, it will be more difficult for the kitten to adapt to such a name, and it will become anxious and less cooperative.

It is also not recommended to name pets after family members and politicians, but the names of other famous people (cultural figures, writers, film and book characters) are quite acceptable.

Also, keep in mind that you should choose one specific name, and all short and affectionate variations of it should sound as similar as possible. If each family member calls the pet differently, it will be difficult for the cat to understand the exact sound of their name.

  • We had two kittens, completely black, smooth-haired. We named them Mars and Marquise.

  • A Georgian guy named Badri (Baadur on his passport) brought me a black kitten. The kitten was as nimble as a little devil, feisty, graceful, and warlike as a Saracen (I'm reading a book about that). And I felt it needed an Eastern sound, like Murzufl Saladin ibn Baadur on his passport, but Murzik for short.

  • I live in Vilnius. Today, October 5, 2017, I was taking the dog out in the morning and it was pouring down. I heard a kitten screaming and yelling. We found him and the dog and took him home. Now there's a new tenant, he's so black I don't even know if it's a boy or a girl. I didn't have time to look. He's very ugly, wet, skinny, and very small, but you can see he's already eating and isn't afraid of dogs.
