Hepatovet for dogs

Hepatovet is a hepatotropic drug used for the prevention, treatment, and restoration of liver cells. Animal livers have an exceptional ability to regenerate themselves, but only with adequate support. With the approval of a veterinarian, Hepatovet can be used as a feed supplement during treatment with other aggressive medications.

Indications

The liver is a unique organ that performs complex biochemical functions, including breaking down nutrients from food into digestible coenzymes. It also produces essential amino acids, enzymes, platelets, vitamins, proteins, and cholesterol. But the gland's most important function is detoxification. It bears the brunt of the damage when toxins, whether organic or inorganic, enter a dog's body.

Hepatovet for dogs

Hepatovet is a suspension that helps not only regenerate damaged liver cells but also treat congenital and acquired disorders, as well as accelerate the recovery of the dog's body after endo- and exotoxicosis.

The instructions for Hepatovet for dogs state that the suspension can be used if the dog exhibits the following symptoms:

  • change in the color of the whites of the eyes (yellowing);
  • discolored oily stool;
  • vomit;
  • belching of bile;
  • loss of appetite;
  • bloating (not just in puppies).

For preventative purposes, the suspension can be given to absolutely all dogs that are regularly treated with insecticides (for fleas and ticks) and pesticides (for internal parasites). Preservatives, dyes, and synthetic additives found in low-quality pet foods also have a negative impact on the liver.

With the approval of a veterinarian, Hepatovet can be administered to dogs undergoing treatment with steroids or cortisone. Since these medications directly affect the liver, the suspension will significantly reduce the extent of damage.

Instructions: release form, application procedure

The medication is available as drops (a suspension ready for oral administration). Although Hepatovet can also be used as a feed supplement, the manufacturer recommends storing the bottle separately from the animal's food (preferably in a dark place at a temperature of 2-25°C).

Although Hepatovet has a shelf life of 24 months, giving the suspension to an animal within 21 days of opening the bottle is strictly prohibited.

The drops have a rather distinctive smell and taste, so it's recommended to administer the medication directly into the dog's throat using a special pipette. Mixing the suspension with a small amount of food or clean water is also acceptable.

Syringe for suspension

The exact dosage is determined by a veterinarian individually for each pet. The instructions for use of Hepatovet for dogs provide approximate recommendations. The minimum continuous course of therapy should be 3 weeks, and the maximum is 5 weeks. If the desired results are not achieved within the allotted time, the course of Hepatovet can be repeated no sooner than after 2-3 weeks. The instructions specify a single dose of 1 ml of suspension for every 10 kg of the dog's weight. Dogs weighing less than 5 kg are also given 1 ml of Hepatovet once, but it is recommended to reduce the total daily dosage.

For prophylaxis, the suspension is administered twice daily; for treatment, three times daily. However, it is important to ensure that the number of drops administered does not exceed the recommended doses listed in the table below.

Before each administration of the suspension, shake the glass bottle thoroughly, as the natural components in Hepatovet may form a sediment.

If, due to any circumstances, one or two doses of the medication are missed, or more, the medication should be resumed as soon as possible, following the same schedule and dosage as before.

Price

Since the suspension is produced in Russia by API-SAN LLC, the price of Hepatovet for dogs is quite reasonable: 740-790 rubles for 100 ml, 400-420 rubles for 50 ml.

Composition and effect on the body

The product can be considered relatively natural, as it contains no harsh synthetic ingredients and only herbs. The drops are made from distilled water. The active ingredients include:

  • methionine (100 mg);
  • essential phospholipids (60 mg);
  • ornithine (50 mg);
  • Maryin thistle (15 mg);
  • Goldenrod (15 mg).

Methionine is a neutral, genetically encoded amino acid that is not produced in dogs. However, methionine is considered one of the top ten so-called "essential" amino acids that must be present in every pet's diet. Methionine is found in Hepatovet:

  • prevents hair loss, itching and skin rashes caused by liver diseases;
  • acts as a lipotropic (helps the animal’s body break down fat faster);
  • reduces the level of cholesterol in blood plasma;
  • increases the production of lecithin;
  • improves the rate of transport and bioavailability of selenium and zinc.

Methionine itself does not restore liver cells, but it significantly improves its functional state.

L-ornithine directly combats hepatic encephalopathy, hepatitis, jaundice, cirrhosis.

Essential phospholipids in Hepatovet:

  • improve the functioning of the gland;
  • normalize the enzymatic activity of liver cells;
  • reduce the level of toxins already accumulated in the liver;
  • promote the regeneration of damaged cells;
  • convert neutral fats and cholesterol into compounds that facilitate their metabolism;
  • stabilize the physical and chemical properties of bile;
  • normalize protein metabolism;
  • have antifibrinolytic action.

Milk thistle extract (commonly known as milk thistle) is added to Hepatovet for detoxification purposes. Numerous official studies indicate that milk thistle alone is quite effective in treating most liver diseases in dogs. While the extract won't improve the functioning of this vital organ, it will significantly reduce the risk of further liver damage caused by toxins and other synthetic medications. Exposure to virtually any unnatural component in a dog's body negatively impacts the liver. Milk thistle is designed to quickly and effectively remove all toxins ingested from the gastrointestinal tract.

Milk thistle cleanses the liver very quickly and effectively, significantly reducing the amount of active ingredients in the medication entering the bloodstream. To avoid unintentional reduction in therapeutic concentrations, do not administer any other medications containing milk thistle to your dog along with Hepatovet.

The extract of the herb of the sandy goldenrod (commonly known as immortelle) has unique restorative properties and ensures the regeneration of damaged liver cells, normalizes ammonia levels and restores the structure of hepatocytes.

Contraindications and side effects

Although Hepatovet's primary purpose is to prevent and treat liver disease, it is contraindicated for dogs with severe liver failure. Progressive hepatic encephalopathy also significantly worsens the animal's condition. The essence is also contraindicated for dogs suffering from epilepsy. Veterinarians' reviews of Hepatovet for dogs indicate that the only side effect noted is increased salivation (this problem resolves spontaneously 15-20 minutes after administration). In rare cases, allergies or individual intolerance to individual components of the drug may develop.

Storage and precautions

Store the medication in a dry, dark place, away from food, household chemicals, and animal feed. The temperature should not fall below 2°C or exceed 25°C. Keep the medication out of the reach of children and animals.

When handling medications, follow generally accepted guidelines for handling medications to protect yourself and others. Basic safety precautions:

  • You should not smoke, drink or eat while using the medicine.
  • After completing the procedure, wash your hands.
  • If the drug gets on the skin or in the eyes, it should be thoroughly washed off under running water.
  • If the medication is swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.

Reviews

Oksana, owner of a French bulldog:

"My bulldog developed foamy vomit and persistent loose stools. The veterinarian diagnosed liver inflammation. They prescribed a full course of medications, including Hepatovet. The doctor explained that Hepatovet specifically needs to be given to prevent the harsh chemicals found in other medications from further damaging the liver. A bottle of the suspension cost about 400 rubles, but it lasted for three weeks. After taking the suspension, the bulldog became healthy and happy again. Therefore, I can recommend the drops."

Evgeniya, owner of a terrier:

"After treating hepatopathy in my beloved mixed-breed dog, I wondered how to prevent a recurrence. The veterinarian recommended Hepatovet. Although the formula isn't completely natural, it doesn't contain any harsh ingredients. It came with a convenient syringe and dropper, so administering the drops was easy. My dog didn't experience any side effects. I hope the suspension helped."

Andrey, veterinarian:

"In my practice, I use Hepasol, and for prevention, I prescribe Essentiale. These medications have been studied, including by me personally. Reading the instructions for Hepatovet for dogs, I sincerely don't understand why the suspension was registered as a drug. Judging by the ingredients, it's more of a dietary supplement, and the relatively low price suggests this. So, I recommend this medication to my clients only for prevention. Serious conditions are best treated with proven medications."
