Composition and release form
This medication is classified as a hepatoprotector, as it is used to restore liver function and regenerate liver cells. It is produced by Api-San, a Russian company that develops and manufactures veterinary medications. It is a ready-to-use injection solution and does not require dilution or mixing with other components before administration. Its convenient dosage form is one of its main advantages.

Hepatoject is a clear, sediment-free liquid. Do not use if cloudiness or foreign impurities appear. The liquid is packaged in dark glass bottles of 20 or 100 ml. The bottles are sealed with rubber stoppers and rolled in aluminum foil.
The active ingredients of the drug are amino acids:
- L-ornithine;
- L-arginine;
- L-citrulline.
In addition, the hepatoprotector contains excipients that enhance the action of the active ingredients, relieve inflammation, reduce pain, and perform other functions. The following are used as excipients:
- sorbitol;
- betaine;
- lidocaine hydrochloride;
- propylparaben;
- metalparaben.
One of the main additional components is purified water.
Pharmacological properties
Thanks to the amino acid complex, Hepatoject has a pronounced hepatoprotective effect:
- L-ornithine is involved in the Krebs cycle—the process by which urine is formed from ammonia. It also has a positive effect on protein metabolism, promotes the production of insulin and somatotropin, and reduces ammonia levels. Levels of this substance are always elevated in liver disease.
- L-arginine removes ammonia from the body and normalizes blood sugar levels. It also improves vascular tone and stimulates cellular metabolism.
- L-citrulline is involved in the process of urea formation and also promotes its elimination from the body.

Together with additional components, amino acids have the following effect on the body:
- stimulate metabolism in the liver;
- promote the regeneration of cells of this organ;
- remove ammonia from the body, reducing its levels;
- increase the outflow of bile;
- normalize carbohydrate metabolism;
- relieve inflammatory processes;
- increase arterial tone;
- stimulate the production of nitrogen-containing enzymes.
In addition, the drug has a detoxifying effect, so it is often used in conjunction with or after therapy with toxic drugs that have a strong negative effect on the liver.
From the injection site, the medication is rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout all organs and systems, easily overcoming the body's barriers. It participates in metabolic processes, where it is partially utilized. The remainder is excreted through the kidneys in the urine.
Indications for use
Hepatoject is prescribed for dogs with liver diseases of various types and severity:
- for hepatitis, including infectious ones;
- in cirrhosis;
- with hepatosis;
- in case of stones;
- for inflammation of the bile ducts;
- in case of neoplasms.
The following symptoms usually indicate liver pathologies:
- poor appetite or complete refusal to eat;
- enlarged belly;
- persistent or intermittent vomiting;
- change in the color or consistency of feces (if the diet and food remain the same);
- yellowness of the mucous membranes;
- lethargy and weakness.

If you notice one or more symptoms, you should seek help from a veterinary clinic.
The medication is also used to restore liver function in infectious and parasitic diseases. A doctor may also prescribe Hepatoject after taking antibiotics and other medications that are eliminated through the liver, causing toxic effects.
The drug can also be used as part of a combination therapy for renal failure, diabetes, and other conditions. According to the instructions for use, treatment of dogs with Hepatoject, as with other animals, should be carried out under the supervision of a veterinarian.
Instructions for use
The injection solution can be administered in several ways:
- subcutaneously (more suitable for small dogs);
- intramuscularly;
- intravenously.
When using the intravenous method, the fluid is administered very slowly.
According to the instructions for use, a single dose of Hepatoject for dogs is 2-5 ml. One or two injections are administered daily, depending on the animal's weight and age, the severity of the condition, and its overall health. The course of treatment typically lasts 5-7 days, but in some cases may be extended to two weeks.
Rules of application
For effective treatment, it is important to follow simple rules and recommendations:
- For injections, use disposable sterile syringes.
- All rules of asepsis must be observed.
- Don't skip doses of the medication, as this will reduce its pharmacological properties. If this does happen, take the injection as soon as possible and resume the treatment regimen previously prescribed by your doctor.
- The drug can be used in combination with other medications.

There is no data on the incompatibility of Hepatoject with other drugs or feed additives.
Contraindications and side effects
According to GOST, the medication is classified as a low-hazard substance. It has no contraindications, with the exception of intolerance to its components. The medication is also not used if there is a history of intolerance. There are no age or weight restrictions for Hepatoject. A veterinarian determines the need for treatment, dosage, duration, and regimen on an individual basis.
The medication does not cause any side effects. Occasionally, allergic reactions may occur. In such cases, treatment with the hepatoprotector should be discontinued. To eliminate allergic reactions, which may manifest as itching, redness, rash, or other symptoms, antihistamines are prescribed.

Even though the product contains lidocaine, the first injection can be quite painful. Over time, the animal's body adapts and tolerates the injections more easily.
Precautions and storage rules
Although the hepatoprotector is considered safe, if it comes into contact with mucous membranes or skin, wash it off immediately. Wash your hands after injections. If an allergic reaction occurs, consult a doctor.
It is important to follow simple storage rules:
- The temperature regime should be between +5 and +25°C.
- The medicine should be stored away from sunlight and in a dry place.
- The injection solution should be kept out of the reach of children.
- Do not store the product near feed or food products.
After opening the bottle, the drug can be used within 3 weeks.
Price
The cost of Hepatoject for dogs depends on the size of the bottle:
- 20 ml – 500-630 rub.;
- 100 ml – 920-1100 rubles.
Owner reviews
Angelina, owner of a South Russian Shepherd:
"When our Marta (that's her dog's name) was diagnosed with piroplasmosis, we were shocked. After tests at the hospital, we were given a shot of Piro-Stop and some other medications, and then prescribed Metrogyl and Hepatoject for home use. We administered the injections intramuscularly. It was obvious she was in pain, but she bravely endured. Within a few days, Marta felt better, and her test results returned to normal. I've read numerous positive reviews about this hepatoprotector, and I'm happy to share them."
Lydia, the bulldog's owner:
"After treating a urinary tract infection with antibiotics, her liver function tests worsened. The dog lost her appetite, refused to play, and spent the entire day lying down. The doctor prescribed an injection of Hepatoject. It's not exactly cheap, but it's effective. The very next day, the dog felt much better and started eating his favorite food. When she had her tests repeated after the course (the injections lasted five days), all the results were normal. I believe this domestically produced hepatoprotector helped us overcome the intoxication caused by the antibiotics."
Veterinarian Reviews
Nikolai, a veterinarian at a capital clinic:
"Hepatoject is a modern and highly effective drug that helps the liver recover during illness and after taking toxic medications. The first injection is usually very painful, but animals tolerate the injections better afterward."
Valentina, a veterinarian with 7 years of experience:
"I consider Hepatoject to be the most effective hepatoprotector. I've been prescribing it to my patients for over a year now. During this time, I've never had a single side effect or allergic reaction. Dogs don't particularly like these injections because of the pain, but they provide tremendous liver support. I prescribe the medication for liver pathologies, infectious diseases, and while taking strong medications."
