Frontline for dogs
Every day we care for our pets, and in return, they reciprocate with their boundless love and devotion, wagging their tails joyfully and cheerfully as they greet their beloved owner when he or she comes home from work. We enjoy playing together and taking daily walks, and with the arrival of the spring and summer season, trips out of town. However, a vacation in the forest or at the dacha isn't just a wonderful opportunity for the dog to romp freely and for the owner to enjoy nature; it also poses a real risk of ticks, fleas, and all sorts of insect bites.
To protect their dog from these insidious parasites, a responsible owner should consider protective measures in advance. Those who adhere to the "trust, but verify" principle don't rush to buy and test the recommended product on their pet, but rather read reviews online and visit the manufacturer's website first. This review focuses on one such product—Frontline for dogs, which has long earned the trust of many dog owners and enjoys a good reputation.

Manufacturer
Frontline – is one of the products of the Merial company, which specializes in the development and production of vaccines and veterinary drugs for livestock and pets.
This French company was founded in 1997 as a joint venture between the veterinary subsidiaries of Merck & Co and Sanofi-Aventis. In January 2017, Merial was acquired by the German corporation Boehringer Ingelheim and merged with the veterinary division of Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica.

They are now one of the world leaders in the veterinary industry, and are actively engaged in research and development, as well as the development of innovative products in the field of animal health.
Today, there is a whole range of products aimed at protecting animals from fleas and ticks, produced under the Frontline brand.
Frontline (spray)

The product is available in 100 and 250 ml bottles. It is used to combat ticks and fleas in adult dogs and puppies from two days of age. The active ingredient is fipronil, which has a detrimental effect on ectoparasites.
Frontline spray for dogs has a number of advantages:
- easy and convenient to dose;
- the effect occurs immediately after the treated wool dries
- can be used for pets weighing less than 2 kg;
- can be used for puppies from 2 weeks of age;
- there are no contraindications for pregnant and lactating women;
- protection against ticks lasts up to 4 weeks;
- 1 application protects against fleas and lice for up to 8 weeks;
- absence of pungent odor.
Frontline's dog spray is also easy to store, as the bottle is equipped with a safety lock that prevents accidental spraying.
Fortline drops
All Frontline dog drops work the same way, so their instructions are virtually identical. Immediately after application to the animal's skin, the substance begins to distribute and gradually cover the entire skin and coat. This process is complete within 24 hours. The medication does not enter the bloodstream, but accumulates in the outer layer of the skin, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands, creating a protective barrier. This protective barrier protects the dog from ticks for four weeks and from fleas for four to 12 weeks. Frequent shampooing (more than twice a month) can only affect the duration of the protective effect.
Spot-On (drops)

A classic product containing fipronil, available as drops for application to the skin. It is used against fleas, lice, lice, ticks, scabies mites, and mosquitoes. It is available in blue tubes sealed in blisters. Frontline Spot-On is available in four different sizes, depending on the pet's weight:

Combo (drops)
One of the most famous medications in this series is the withers drops for dogs Frontline Combo.
It is based on two active ingredients - fipronil And (S)-methopreneFipronil acts on adult parasites, causing paralysis upon contact, which leads to their subsequent death. A(S)-methoprene attacks insect eggs and larvae, interrupting their development cycle and thus the risk of re-infestation. This feature also helps protect the home itself, as it completely stops the reproduction of these parasites and further infestation of the dog's habitat.

These Frontline drops for dogs differ from the Spot-On series in that they contain a second active ingredient, (S)-methoprene, which kills flea eggs and larvae.
This product is available in green pipettes and is also packaged in four types of packaging depending on the dog's weight:
- cats (0.5 ml);
- S - small breed dogs (0.67 ml);
- M — medium-sized dogs (1.34 ml);
- L — large breeds (2.68 ml);
- XL - giants (4.02 ml);
Tri-Akt (drops)
These Frontline dog drops are essential during the summer, as they are designed to protect pets from insects that can carry the dangerous disease dirofilariasis.

The pipette contains a solution, which is also applied to the withers. Their main difference is that they provide active protection not only against fleas and ticks, but also against flying insects: mosquitoes, midges, and sting flies. In addition, fipronil the formula includes a substance permethrin, which also has insect repellent properties. It comes in five pink pipette sizes, each designed for a different dog weight: 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 6 ml, with a dosage of 0.1 ml per 1 kg of body weight.
Instructions for use of drops
Before applying Frontline for dogs, first remove your pet's collar and ensure there are no injuries or wounds on the skin. Also, make sure the coat and skin are dry. Next, break off the tip of the tube and, parting the fur between the shoulder blades with your hand, squeeze the entire amount onto the skin near the withers in one or more spots, preventing the animal from licking the product. The coat will be damp or oily for some time (about 24 hours). Until the coat is completely dry, avoid petting or handling your dog, and keep it away from small children.
If your pet weighs over 60 kg, the instructions for using sCombo or Tri-Guard for dogs recommend combining the XL tube with a dropper of the appropriate volume for the dog's weight. The required volume of the additional dropper can also be calculated based on 0.067 ml per 1 kg of body weight.
For two days after treatment, prevent your pet from swimming in water or using shampoo or soap at home. This product is strictly prohibited for puppies under two months of age, animals weighing less than 2 kg, and during illness. Repeat treatment should be no sooner than three weeks later.
Reviews of Frontline drops for dogs
Katerina, veterinarian:
Most of my patients use flea treatments in the form of topical drops applied to the withers. This is a convenient and effective method for preventing a wide range of diseases, suitable for dogs of all breeds and sizes. The procedure is usually easy for the owner to carry out at home. Over the years, I've observed the use of various products and have come to the conclusion that Frontline is truly the best.
Elena, Chow Chow breeder:
Fleas were a serious problem for us until we discovered Frontline drops. They're truly effective and do their job 100%. I buy the same brand's spray for pregnant and nursing bitches, as well as puppies. For adult animals, I apply the drops to the withers. Since Frontline arrived, we've never had to worry about fleas or ticks again.
Flea and tick tablets
Initially, the tablets were developed specifically for animals whose lifestyles expose them to parasites (such as hunting dogs). However, today, many owners of toy breeds living in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other major cities also prefer to buy Frontline tablets for dogs rather than sprays or drops.
Veterinarians recommend using Frontline Nexgard tablets if your dog:
- lives in an apartment and likes to sleep on the bed with the owner;
- frequently contacts with children;
- walks in parks or forest belts where there is a high probability of encountering ticks;
- often plays with other domestic dogs;
- indirectly contacts with stray animals in the urban environment;
- used in hunting.

Many owners prefer to use Frontline's Nexgard tablets for their dogs, noting the following advantages:
- a single dose provides protection for a whole month;
- the effectiveness does not depend on the frequency of bathing the pet;
- there is no smell, as when using spray or drops;

Frontline Nexgard Reviews for Dogs
Valentina, veterinarian:
I strongly recommend tablets to my clients, as they are the most convenient way to provide maximum protection for their pets during tick and mosquito season. The enhanced Spectra formulation is preferable during the summer. The tablets are well-tolerated, the effect lasts for up to a month, and the packaging includes stickers for recording the treatment procedure in the veterinary passport.
Oleg, husky breeder:
For many years, Frontline Nexgard has been our choice. It's incredibly simple and truly effective. We don't even know what fleas are. Even if a stray one latches on during a walk, it simply dies after the first bite. Since we've used it, we haven't seen a single case of disease preventable by the tablets in our kennel.
Price of Frontline for dogs
Having analyzed the price tags of several online stores, we can say that the average cost of one Combo pipette is 100-150 rubles higher than Spot-On.

- from 2 to 10 kg – from 550 to 690 rubles;
- from 10 to 20 kg – from 610 to 780 rubles;
- from 20 to 40 kg – from 680 to 870 rubles;
